Something that confuses many new players in Baldur’s Gate 3 is the difference between the Sorcerer and Wizard classes, which both look very similar on the surface, typically use the same weapons and armour, and share many spells.

While they initially appear very similar, there are many important differences between these two classes. In this BG3 Sorcerer versus Wizard Guide, we will explain these differences, along with the strengths and weaknesses of both classes and their various subclasses.

BG3 Sorcerer vs Wizard Intro

The difference between the Sorcerer and the Wizard stems from the lore behind these two spellcasting classes.

Wizards gained their magical powers through years of intense study. As such, they use the Intelligence ability to cast their spells and have access to a massive library of spells to learn. They can also learn spells from scrolls, for a small fee.

On the other hand, Sorcerers possess a natural magical talent. They are less learned than Wizards; they have a smaller range of spells, but typically specialise in a particular area of magic. For example, you can play as a Storm Sorcerer, who is far better at bg3 lightning icon Lightning and bg3 thunder icon Thunder spells than a Wizard can ever hope to be. Sorcerers cast their spells using the Charisma ability.

If you want a spellcaster who can have a tool for every situation, the Wizard is a better choice. But if you want a specialised powerhouse, you should choose the Sorcerer instead.

BG3 Sorcerer vs Wizard Mechanics

Now that you know the basic ideas behind the Sorcerer and Wizard classes, we can look at a more detailed comparison of their features.

BG3 Sorcerer Features

As mentioned above, Sorcerers have a smaller range of spells but can achieve greater heights with the magic they specialise in.

The Sorcerer class revolves around the Metamagic mechanic. Your Sorcerer possesses Sorcery Points, which are replenished when you rest. These points have the following uses:

Empower your spells using special Metamagic Abilities

  • bg3 twinned spell icon Twinned Spell splits a spell to target two creatures instead of one
  • bg3 quickened spell icon Quickened Spell casts your spell with a Bonus Action instead of an Action, allowing you to perform an additional Action on your turn.
  • bg3 heightened spell icon Heightened Spell makes your spell more likely to succeed.
  • There are several other choices; these are just some examples.

Replenish Spell Slots

  • If you spend all of your Spell Slots, you can convert Sorcery Points to refill them.
  • You can also do this in reverse, sacrificing Spell Slots to gain Sorcery Points.

BG3 Wizard Features

The Wizard is a functionally simpler class than the Sorcerer. Its defining feature is its massive library of spells, giving you an option for any situation you can possibly encounter in BG3.

However, there are a few important things to remember:

Wizards can learn a huge number of spells, but they cannot prepare all of them at once.

  • Prepared spells are the ones that are slotted on your hotbar and can be activated at will.
  • You can change your Prepared spells at any time, unless you are in combat.
  • Experience makes it easier to know which spells to prepare, so for this reason, the Wizard is a little harder for new players.

Wizards can learn even more spells from scrolls they carry. This will destroy the scroll and cost a fairly small gold fee.

BG3 Sorcerer & Wizard Strengths and Weaknesses

BG3 Wizard vs Sorcerer Differences

Here are the main strengths and weaknesses of the Sorcerer and Wizard classes in BG3:

Sorcerer

Strengths

  • Correct use of Metamagic can accomplish superb feats of spellcasting, such as using bg3 twinned spell icon Twinned Spell with a powerful spell like bg3 disintegrate icon Disintegrate or bg3 haste icon Haste.
  • Makes for a great “face of the party” thanks to its high Charisma ability.
  • Can convert Sorcery Points to Spell Slots if needed.

Weaknesses

  • Narrower spell selection than the Wizard, and can learn far fewer of them throughout a playthrough.
  • Must wait until the next level up (or respec) to swap out any learned spells.

Wizard

Strengths

  • Unmatched selection of spells.
  • Tools to solve just about any situation in the game (if you have the right spell learned and prepared).
  • Cast some utility spells for free outside of combat (like enhance ability icon bg3 Enhance Leap and bg3 longstrider icon Longstrider), which helps with exploration.

Weaknesses

  • The Wizard’s superior adaptability relies on preparing the correct spells for a given encounter, which isn’t easy for first-time players.
  • Focus on Intelligence rather than Charisma means that the Wizard performs poorly in most dialogue skill checks (bg3 persuasion icon Persuasion, bg3 intimidation icon Intimidation, etc).

BG3 Sorcerer & Wizard Subclasses & Archetypes

bg3 sorcerer wizard guide

Here is a quick overview of the various subclasses and build archetypes available for the Sorcerer and Wizard classes in BG3. We also included links to powerful builds for each option, in case any sound interesting.

BG3 Sorcerer Subclasses

The Sorcerer class can take any of these subclasses:

Draconic Bloodline

  • You get additional HP and Armour Class.
  • Choose a Draconic Ancestry, granting you an extra spell.
  • At higher levels, your Draconic Ancestry gives you extra damage output with and resistance to the associated element.

Shadow Magic

  • You can see through magical darkness and spawn clouds of darkness to give you an advantage in combat.
  • At higher levels, you can summon a shadow hound to help you in combat, potentially restoring Sorcery Points to you when it attacks enemies.

Storm Sorcery

  • You can fly short distances after casting storm magic.
  • At higher levels, you unlock additional storm-themed spells and gain significant damage bonuses when dealing bg3 lightning icon Lightning or bg3 thunder icon Thunder Damage.
  • You also gain resistance to these damage types.

Wild Magic

  • Your spells have a small chance to trigger a Wild Magic Surge.
  • Wild Magic Surges cause a random effect to happen to your character or those around them.
  • This is a good subclass for players who enjoy chaos and RNG mechanics.

BG3 Wizard Subclasses

The Wizard has nine subclasses, more than any other class in the game:

Abjuration School

Bladesinging

  • Your Wizard gains Proficiency with some melee weapons.
  • You can use bg3 bladesong icon Bladesong to enhance your melee combat.
  • At higher levels, you get an bg3 extra attack icon Extra Attack, allowing you to make two melee attacks per turn.

Conjuration School

  • Quite weak at low levels.
  • Later on, you can teleport or swap places with an ally.
  • At high levels, you cannot lose Concentration on Conjuration spells by taking damage.

Divination School

  • Gain bg3 portent icon Portent dice, allowing you to manipulate the outcome of dice rolls in your vicinity.
  • At high levels, you can see in the dark and see invisible targets.

Enchantment School

  • You can attempt to hypnotise enemies.
  • At higher levels, you can charm an attacker to interrupt their attack.
  • Eventually, you can split Enchantment spells, allowing them to target two creatures.

Evocation School

  • Allies won’t take damage from your Evocation spells.
  • At high levels, your Evocation Cantrips become stronger and Evocation Spells deal bonus damage.

Illusion School

  • Summon illusions to distract enemies.
  • At higher levels, you gain the ability to see invisible objects and creatures.
  • Eventually, you can summon an illusion to distract an attacking enemy, causing them to miss.

Necromancy School

  • Regain HP when you kill an enemy with a spell.
  • At higher levels, you can summon undead minions. While other Wizards can do this too, your undead are stronger, and you can have more of them.
  • Eventually, you become resistant to bg3 necrotic icon Necrotic Damage and immune to effects that reduce your maximum HP.

Transmutation School

  • When you craft a potion, you roll a Medicine check. If successful, the potion is duplicated.
  • You can craft a magical stone to give buffs to the creature carrying it.
  • At high levels, you can transform into a blue jay and fly around.

BG3 Sorcerer & Wizard Multiclassing Options

You can create some extremely strong setups by combining multiple classes with BG3’s multiclass system. Here are some of the strongest options:

  • Sorlock BuildCombines the Sorcerer and Warlock classes to unleash devastating bursts of magical damage, killing some enemies with just one spell.
  • Lorecerer BuildCombines the Sorcerer with the College of Lore Bard. Great at controlling the battlefield by buffing allies and stunning enemies.
  • Eldritch Blaster BuildCombines the Sorcerer and Warlock with the Fighter class. This is quite similar to the Sorlock build, but focuses on buffing the bg3 eldritch blast icon Eldritch Blast cantrip as much as possible.
  • Sorcadin Build: The Sorcerer and Paladin classes are rolled into one, creating a very tanky “spellsword” playstyle.

BG3 Sorcerer vs Wizard – Which One to Choose?

If you’re still unsure whether to choose the Sorcerer or the Wizard for your BG3 character, it comes down to two things:

If you want your spellcaster to specialise in a small range of spells and nuke enemies with their empowered magic, choose the Sorcerer.

If you prefer a measured and tactical approach to combat and don’t mind keeping track of which spells should be prepared at any given time, go with the Wizard.
