“SOLO Magblade”

Updated: Greymoor Chapter
Type: Solo Dungeons, Overland and Maelstrom Arena

Welcome to the “SOLO Magblade” Magicka Nightblade Build for PvE in Elder Scrolls Online. This build is optimized for solo play. Make sure to bookmark the link as I will keep updating the build for each new Update of ESO. If you are new I recommend checking out the Magicka Nightblade Beginner Guide and the Magicka Nightblade Beginner 160CP Build before you tackle on this setup. You can also find a META Magicka Nightblade Group Build that is made for dungeons and trials.

Other Magicka Nightblade Guides:

This build here is specifically designed for SOLO play. You can play this build in Overland or Dungeons (normal and veteran). I also made sure to give you a few gear choices below because it is not always easy to get the right gear in Elder Scrolls Online. Magicka Nightblades are very powerful in a Solo environment both in dealing damage and healing.

They have Swallow Soul as their single target damage ability that also heals them at the same time. Sap Essence is used as an AoE damage ability that again, also heals you for a crazy amount. With these two skills alone you already almost never have to worry about your health dropping too low. And because we are using the Iceheart Monster Set that will constantly give us shields, we also have a huge buffer in between. if that is still not enough we always can utilize the Harness Magicka shield to bolster our health even further.

  • Solo Build for Normal & Veteran Dungeons
  • Solo Build for Overland
  • Easy to get Gear & Advanced Setups
  • Big Shields
  • Good Self Healing

Solo Setup

Gearsetup 1: 5x False God’s Devotion, 5x Mother’s Sorrow, 2x Iceheart, 1x MSA Destro

If you want to see more viable gear options I recommend reading the Magicka DPS Gear Sets Article which explains all of the sets in detail.

  • Setup 1 Most Optimal Setup
  • Setup 2 Easy to get Gear
  • Setup 3 Beginner Setup

Gear Setup 1

  • Offensive vs Defensive: I recommend using the Iceheart Monster set, it makes your life so much easier because the shield constantly refreshes on you, that way you can focus more on damage too. If you want to go for pure damage make sure to choose the Slimecraw Monster Set, the Minor Berserk buff is really strong and the next best choice for a solo setup. You can also go for a more AoE focused Monster Set like the Grothdarr Monster Set.
  • False God’s Devotion: False God's Devotion is very powerful in both the imperfect and perfect version, I can highly recommend this set. You can farm it fairly easy in normal mode Sunspire.
  • No Maelstrom Staff? If you do not have a Maelstrom Staff, just use another Mother’s Sorrow staff instead, the dps loss is not that big.

Gear Setup 2

This setup is easier to acquire and also has more defensive stats compared to the first one, which means it’s safer to play. Once again, make sure to use the Iceheart Monster Set, it really makes a huge difference in terms of defense, it procs very easily and gives you a huge shield that absorbs a lot of damage.

Note: You can change the gear pieces any way you want. So for example you can simply craft Julianos staves if you can’t find any Mother’s Sorrow ones or if they are too expensive. Just make sure to check that you have at least 5 light armor pieces equipped! You could also simply run a Shock Mother’s Sorrow Staff (Argonian Muck Minder of Mother’s Sorrow – Unique Item) which is very easy to obtain from a special quest reward in Deshaan. The quest is called “The Saving of Silent Mire“.

Gear Setup 3 Beginner

You can either simply farm or buy the Mother's Sorrow set for a pretty cheap price if you do not pick the best in slot traits or ask a guild member. More important is that you just get the full sets together as fast as possible, even if you do not have the best traits.

Law of Julianos can be crafted, either by yourself but most likely you don’t have the necessary traits yet, ask a guild mate to craft you the gear, or ask someone in a trading guild, if you have the materials there is always someone that can help you.

Where can I get the gear?

False God's Devotion: Sunspire
Julianos: Craftable
Mother's Sorrow: Deshaan Overland, Guildtrader
Maelstrom Destruction Staff: vet Maelstrom Arena
Slimecraw: Head: Wayrest Sewers I, Shoulder: Maj Undaunted Chest
Grothdarr: Head: Vaults of Madness, Shoulder: Glirion
Iceheart: Head: Direfrost Keep, Shoulder: Glirion Undaunted Chest
Magnus' Gift: Craftable in Rivenspire, Greenshade, Shadowfen

IMPORTANT: You can get a Shock Mother’s Sorrow Staff by doing a simple quest, that way you earn the staff! You will receive the “Argonian Muck Minder of Mother’s Sorrow” from the Quest in Silent Mire, Deshaan.

Keep up your shields and deal damage, that is the theme of the build. Because your two main damage abilities both have heals attached to them, you should be fine with healing as long as you keep dealing damage.

  • Remember, you can change out some of the abilities if you want or never use them. And you can also adjust the bars.
  • Siphoning Attacks: Make sure to always reapply Siphoning Attacks after it ran out.

Slot 5: Dark ShadeSlot 5: Consuming Trap
Ultimate: Incapacitating StrikeUltimate: Soul Tether

Skill explanation:

  • Harness Magicka: Activate this if you you are expecting to get a huge punsh in the face (Boss Heavy Attack for example). This will bolster your health.
  • Merciless Resolve: Increases your damage mitigation and once you activate the bow proc, you also get a huge heal!
  • Swallow Soul: Your main spammable, deals very good damage and also heals you at the same time.
  • Sap Essence: Your main AoE damage ability, deals a lot of damage and also heals you at the same time for a lot! Also grants Major Sorcery.
  • Dark Shade: Applies Minor Maim to the enemy, reducing their damage by 15% and also deals AoE damage.
  • Incapacitating Strike: 20% damage buff on activation on the target. You also gain Reave, gaining 100 Magicka and Stamina every time you do a Light Attack on an enemy with a debuff. (You could use the mother morph, but the reason we picked this one is because it gives a nice sustain boost!)
  • Unstable Wall of Elements: Your main AoE ability, has to be on the ground all the time.
  • Twisting Path: Deals good AoE damage and also gives you a speed buff for a short duration.
  • Elemental Drain: Apply this to bosses or bigger enemies, this will make your sustain better and also increase your damage by A LOT.
  • Siphoning Attacks: This is your main sustain tool, always make sure to activate this once it runs! If you are unsure, you could put this on the front bar, that way you won’t forget it.
  • Consuming Trap: Single Target DoT that you need to keep on the enemy, every time someone dies affected by this, you gain a huge amount of resources.
  • Soul Tether: You can use this on trash packs, huge AoE damage ultimate that also gives you a big heal!

Important Info for Solo Magblade

Gear Setup 1: Tri-Stat Buff Food

You can both of these buff foods in the store, Bewitched Sugar Skulls is more expensive than the Longfin Pasty, but both provide similar stats that we need.

Bewitched Sugar Skulls
(Max Health, Max Magicka, Max Stamina)

bewitched sugar skills food

Longfin Pasty with Melon Sauce
(Max Health, Max Magicka, Max Stamina)

Gear Setup 2 & 3

Because we need to get sustain from somewhere else if we don’t have False God’s Devotion, I recommend using the Witchmother’s Potent Brew on Gear Setup 2 & 3. You can buy this very cheap in the guild stores or even ask people to give you some.

Food buff

Mundus Stone

The extra Spell Penetration will increase our damage output by a lot.

The Lover Mundus (Increased Spell Penetration)

I choose Breton because you get a huge sustain boost and higher resistances in combination with extra max magicka. All magicka based classes work but you might want to make some small adjustments.

Breton (Recommended, best sustain)

You can use normal potions that you find, as long as you make sure to use Sap essence every 20 seconds to gain Major Sorcery from it (20% Spell damage boost). You will loose Major Prophecy (10% Spell Crit) though, if you want to get that buff too you should use the Spell Power Potions that give you that buff too, but they are way more expensive.

Essence of Magicka Potion
(Bought in Guild Stores, fairly cheap)

Spell-Power Potions
(Spell-crit, Spell Damage, Magicka)
(Cornflower, Ladys Smock, Water Hyacinth)

Spell Power Potions

Important: Make sure to get alchemy to level 50 to unlock the Medicinal Use passive. That way you can keep up the buffs of potions a 100% of the time.

Resource Management

Resource management with a solo build is slightly different compared to a group setup because you can’t really rely on your healer to give you resources back. Now that doesn’t really matter because we have other means of restoring resources. Your main tool of restoring resources is your heavy attacks, they are pretty slow but you will regain so much resources. You can also use your potions on cooldown that will return a lot of extra resources. Elemental Drain is a key ability to increase your sustain and damage in a fight, make sure to keep it up all the times! The ability Siphoning Attacks is another very important tool. You have to keep this up all the time during a fight.

In case you don’t know what what weaving light attacks is, make sure to check out the “Weaving Beginner Guide” which explains how to weave light attacks between abilities, aka animation canceling.

For this kind of setup there is not a fixed rotation at all, your main goal should always be to stay alive and you do that by keeping up your shield and healing abilities.

  1. Keep up your DoTs, you have 4 DoTs that should always be on the boss. Unstable Wall of Elements, Twisting Path, Consuming Trap and Dark Shade.
  2. you have 4 long buffs that you need to keep up, Merciless Resolve, Dark Shade, Siphoning Attacks and Elemental Drain. They all last for about 20 seconds, so they should be way easier to keep up.

If you want a fixed rotation for this setup then you have to do the following:

Before the fight: Activate Merciless Resolve, Dark Shade, Siphoning Attacks and Elemental Drain before the fight starts.

Unstable Wall of Elements > LA > Twisting Path > Consuming Trap > Weapon Swap

5x LA > Swallow Soul > Restart

  • When the Spectral Bow procs from Merciless Resolve, activate this instead of Swallow Soul.
  • If any of the long buffs run out, re-activate these instead of using Swallow Soul.
  • Sap Essence is only used in fights with several enemies or if you need to keep up your Major Sorcery buff (if you don’t have Spell Power Potions).

Bad Habits

  • A lot of people have a bad habit of forgetting their backbar abilities, you should really focus on always weapon swapping enough to re-apply the DoTs and buffs on your backbar.
  • Keeping up your shield 24/7 is key to this build, that way your health can never really be damaged. Easy to see when you watch some of my gameplay that I keep up the shield all the time.
  • Always keep moving your character around, if you just stand on the ground you take unnecessary damage from melee monsters, that damage can easily be avoided by kiting (running away backwards from the enemy and still dealing damage to him.
  • Not keeping up your resource management abilities causes you to loose a lot of sustain, so make sure to always keep them up!
