ESO Race Guide
There is a total of 10 different ESO races, this ESO race guide should help you determine what kind or race you want to choose. Each of the races has different and unique passives that I will explain in this article. There are a total of three Alliances in Elder Scrolls Online, each of those have different races. I will also explain what race you preferably should choose for which setup. There is also a way to unlock all races for any Alliance, which I will explain below.
Daggerfall Covenant (Breton, Redguard, Orc)
Daggerfall Covenant is a Faction in Elder Scrolls Online. The Daggerfall Covenant is a compact between the peoples of northwest Tamriel—Bretons, Redguards, and Orcs—that forms an alliance of mutual defense, with a vision of establishing peace and order across Tamriel. Indeed, the kings of the Covenant take the Remans as their model, claiming to be the spiritual heirs of the Second Empire.
So this is the modern Daggerfall Covenant, an alliance of the Redguards of northern Hammerfell, under King Fahara’jad; the Orcs of the mountainous northeast, under King Kurog of Orsinium; with the Breton King Emeric of High Rock presiding from his palace in Wayrest. At its best, it is a noble alliance of honorable and chivalrous peoples, representing all the best aspects of the First and Second Empires. And from this solid foundation, perhaps a third, even mightier Empire shall arise, providing all the peoples of Tamriel the benefits of mutual respect, vigorous trade, and reverence for the Divines.
Breton racial passives have a strong focus on magicka. Increased max magicka, increased spell resistance and magicka ability cost reduction makes them a good magicka based race often used on healer setups.
Redguard racial passives have a strong focus on stamina. Increased stamina recovery, increased max stamina and on melee attacks you restore a small part of your stamina. This makes them one off the strongest stamina based damage dealer setups.
Orc racial passives have a strong focus on stamina and health. Increased max health and max stamina, increased healing received, increased health recovery, increased melee damage and increased sprint speed. This makes them a very versatile setup both used for damage dealers and tanks.
Aldmeri Dominion (High Elf, Woodelf, Khajiit)
Aldmeri Dominion is a Faction in Elder Scrolls Online. When word reached the High Elves of Alinor that the Imperial City had fallen under the control of the human supporters of Molag Bal, the Aldmeri Dominion was formed. The High Elves reached out to the neighboring races of Wood Elves and Khajiit with a plea that their combined forces might prevent the younger races of Tamriel from bringing disaster to the world, as they had so many times in the past. The High Elves were the original settlers of Tamriel and created the common tongue used throughout the continent today. They are also naturally proficient with magic. The Wood Elves inhabit the thick, near-impenetrable forests of Valenwood. They are supreme hunters, guides, and masters in sneaking and thievery. They are also the most gifted archers in all of Tamriel. The Khajiit, a proud feline race, are fearsome warriors, proficient with bladed weapons. They stand proudly at the forefront of every battle. The power and determination of the Aldmeri Dominion should not be underestimated
Altmer racial passives have a strong focus on magicka. Increased magicka recovery, increased max magicka and increased Flame, Frost and Shock damage. Therefore Altmers are one of the strongest magicka based damage dealers because of their passives.
Bosmer racial passives have a strong focus on stealth based gameplay style. Increased stamina recovery, increased max stamina, increased poison & disease resistance, increased stealth damage and stealth radius detection reduction. This makes them a very good gank class due to their increased attack damage from stealth.
Khajiit racial passives are focused on stamina. Increased health recovery, increased stamina recovery, increased stealth damage, stealth radius detection reduction and increased weapon critical value. They are often used as a stamina based damage dealer setup due to the extra weapon critical they gain from the passives.
Increases the experience gain with the Medium Armor Skill line by 15%. Nimble – Increases your Health Recovery by 20% and Stamina Recovery by 10%. Stealthy – Reduces your detection radius in Stealth by 3 meters. Increases damage done while in Stealth by 10%. Carnage – Increases Weapon Critical by 8%.
Ebonheart Pact (Nord, Dark Elf, Argonian)
Ebonheart Pact is a Faction in Elder Scrolls Online. Jorunn, of Eastern Skyrim, is acting High King of the Great Moot, but he does not rule absolutely. His decisions must be ratified by all three races in a unique form of governance called The Great Moot. He is down-to-earth, humorous, and has an iron will to succeed.
Dunmer racial passives have a strong focus on magicka and fire based damage. Increased max magicka and stamina, increased flame resistance, increased flame damage and increased frost and shock damage. They are one of the strongest magicka based damage dealer races due to their passives.
Increases your Frost and Shock Damage by 2%.
Argonian racial passives are focused on healing and tanking. Increased resource return when you drink a potion, increased max health, increased poison and disease resistance and increased healing received. Argonians are often used on healer and tank setups due to their passives. The Resourceful passive also makes them one of the best races in order to improve sustain tremendously.
Increases swimming speed by 50%. Resourceful – Restores 4620 of your Max Health, Magicka and Stamina when you drink a potion.
Increases Max Magicka by 3%. Argonian Resistance – Increases Max Health by 9% and Poison and Disease Resistance by 1485. Quick to Mend – Increases healing received and done by 5%.
Imperial racial passives are focused on stamina and health. Increased max health, increased max stamina and when you deal melee damage you have a chance to restore a junk of your max health. They are often used as stamina based damage dealers or as tanks.
Increases your gold gained by 1%. Tough – Increases Max Health by 12%. Conditioning – Increases Max Stamina by 10%. Red Diamond – Your melee attacks have a 10% chance to restore 6% of your Max Health.
What race for which setup?
Best choice: Argonian and Imperial
The best choice for a tank race is Argonian. Argonians have superior resource management because of their Potion passive. With a click of a button they restore 4620 extra magicka, health and stamina on top of the potion effects, which makes them the best race for tanks. You also gain extra health and extra healing received on top off that.
Second best choice are Imperials, most people that use Imperials use them because they give you a lot of extra max health and stamina resources. Imperials can also change to stamina damage dealer setup because of their extra max stamina resources.
Best choice: High Elf, Breton and Argonian
High Elf, Breton and Argonian are all very good healer races. High Elf and Breton both get 10% max magicka which strengthens your healing output. They also have good sustain due to increased magicka recovery (High Elf) or cost reduction on spells (Breton). Argonians benefit from 3% max magicka and 5% healing done to strengthen their healing output and with the Potion passive they also have very good sustain.
Magicka Damage Dealer
Best choice: High Elf and Dark Elf
Both High Elf and Dark Elf are very good choices, depending what setup you run. If you have a lot of fire damage then Dark Elf, if you have a lot of mixed damage types then High Elf. High Elf gets 10% max magicka and Dark Elf gets 9% max magicka. High elf has 4% increased Flame, Frost and Shock damage, whereas Dark Elf gets 7% extra flame damage and also has some extra fire resistance.
Stamina Damage Dealer
Best choice: Redguard and Khajiit
Redguard is by far the best stamina damage dealer setup, it provides the most damage and best sustain due to the 10% max stamina and stamina restore passive. Khajiit are about as strong in terms of damage but have way worse sustain compared to Redguard.
Nords have good tanking passives. However, both Imperial and Argonian outshine Nords in terms of efficiency and thus you will not see a lot of Nords.
Woodelf passives are more directed towards ganking and therefore the race plays a very niche role. It has decent stamina damage dealer stats but is outshined most of the times by Redguards.
Orcs have good stamina damage dealer and health based perks. You will most commonly see them used in PvP due to their max sprint speed and extra melee damage. In PvE they are outshined by Redguard or Khajiits.
All Races for any Faction
I highly recommend buying the “All races any faction perk”, this will allow you to use any race in any faction. So you are not locked to the certain alliances. For example this way you could use a Redguard in the Ebonheart Pact, even tho Redguard is usually in the Daggerfall alliance.
