BG3 Life Domain Healer Build Overview

In this section, we will summarise the most important aspects of the Cleric class and Life Domain subclass, which we are using for this build. If you’re already familiar with how these work, please skip this section.

Cleric Class Overview

The Cleric class is a powerful spellcaster who has some proficiency with weapons. They have access to a wide array of buff, debuff and healing spells, making them one of the best classes in the game for party support. At high levels, they are also good damage dealers thanks to their powerful magic. But in the early game, Clerics aren’t very good at dealing damage and are better off focusing on supporting allies.

Here are the most important aspects of the Cleric Class in BG3:

  •  Channel Divinity (Level 2) – This is the Cleric’s unique class resource. You will start with one Channel Divinity charge, which is replenished on a Short or Long Rest. You’ll unlock more charges later. These charges are consumed to power unique Cleric Actions, some of which are strong enough to turn the tide of battle. The Cleric Actions you can use depend on your chosen subclass.
  •  Channel Divinity: Turn Undead (Level 2) – Use a Channel Divinity charge to Turn all nearby undead, forcing them to flee.
  •  Destroy Undead (Level 5) – An upgrade for Turn Undead. Undead who are Turned will also take 4d6 Radiant Damage.
  •  Divine Intervention (Level 10) – Call on your deity to grant you a powerful one-time boon. Can either deal massive AoE damage, resurrect and heal all nearby companions, spawn a generous helping of Camping Supplies and Potions, or summon a Legendary Devotee’s Mace that can deal bonus Radiant Damage and heal nearby allies. You can only use this Action once, but if you choose the Mace, you can keep it forever.

Clerics can also use a wide range of spells, which we will detail in the build guide below.

Life Domain Subclass Overview

Here are the Life Domain Cleric’s defining features:

  • Proficiency with bg3 heavy armour icon Heavy Armour (Level 1)
  • bg3 disciple of life icon Disciple of Life (Level 1) – When you cast a healing spell, the target regains additional HP equal to (2 + spell slot level).
  • bg3 preserve life icon Preserve Life (Level 2) – Spend a Channel Divinity Charge to heal a target for (3 x character level).
  • bg3 blessed healer icon Blessed Healer (Level 6) – When you cast a healing spell on another creature, you gain HP equal to (2 + spell slot level).
  • bg3 divine strike icon Divine Strike: Radiant (Level 8) – Once per turn, your weapon attack deals an extra 1d8 bg3 radiant icon Radiant Damage.

Healer Build Character Creation

Cleric Build BG3 Abilities

In this section, we will guide you through which options to choose in Character Creation for your BG3 Life Cleric Build.

Important: You also already have to select your Subclass at level 1; this can be easily overlooked because the game pushes you directly to the main class and then just selects the first option in the subclass menu. Therefore, make sure that you have selected the Life Domain subclass. If you missed this (or want to use this build for Shadowheart), then visit Withers in your Camp to respec (you first need to find him in the ruins near the Nautiloid crash site in Act I).

Best Race

First off, it is important to note that you can pick whatever race you want; it won’t affect your gameplay that much. However, there are, of course, slightly better races for our Cleric build in Baldur’s Gate 3. For example, one very useful thing we can get from our race is Longbow Proficiency. The Cleric’s main damage Cantrip is Sacred Flame, which has quite a low success rate, especially in the early game. One way around this is to use a ranged weapon instead, and Longbows have pretty good damage.

Our top 5 picks for the best Cleric race are:

Race Strengths Info
wood elf icon bg3

Wood Elf

  • Proficiency in Stealth and Perception
  • Extra Weapon Proficiencies:
    • Shortswords
    • Longswords
    • Shortbows
    • Longbows
  • Fey Ancestry
    • Advantage against Charmed
    • Immune to Magical Sleep
  • Darkvision
  • Fleet of Foot – 1.5 metres of extra Movement Speed
Wood Elves are a great choice for most build types in BG3, thanks to their superior movement speed. Natural Proficiency in Perception is always useful, and immunity to magical Sleep will help you out a lot, especially in the early game, where enemy mages love to spam this spell.

You can also use a Half Wood-Elf for most of the same benefits.

duergar icon bg3

Duergar

With their wide choice of armour and weapon proficiencies, and resistances to poison, charm, and paralysis, Duergar are one of the strongest races in BG3.

The only downside of Duergar is their small stature – this reduces their base Movement Speed to 7.5 metres per turn (most races get 9 metres).

High Elf

  • Proficiency in and Perception
  • Extra Weapon Proficiencies:
    • Shortswords
    • Longswords
    • Shortbows
    • Longbows
  • Fey Ancestry
    • Advantage against Charmed
    • Immune to Magical Sleep
  • Darkvision
  • Choose an extra Cantrip (cast with Intelligence)
Very similar to Wood Elf, but missing the Stealth Proficiency and doesn’t get extra Movement Speed.

You can choose an extra Cantrip to learn, which is handy but not super important.

Githyanki

  • Can wear Light Armour & Medium Armour
  • Extra Weapon Proficiencies:
    • Shortswords
    • Longswords
    • Greatswords
  • Astral Knowledge
    • Gain Proficiency with all Skills belonging to a selected ability, once per Long Rest.
  • Githyanki Psionics
The Githyanki gives you a good range of weapon Proficiencies and innate access to Enhance Leap and Misty Step, which give you excellent mobility. Astral Knowledge makes your character very versatile with their Skill Proficiencies, as long as you remember to use it.

Additionally, Githyanki get the full benefits from equipping various Githyanki weapons, sometimes granting additional Psychic Damage or special features.

Dragonborn, Any

  • Draconic Ancestry – Depending on which Dragonborn variant you choose, you’ll gain:
    • Resistance to an elemental damage type
    • A special AoE elemental breath attack
Dragonborns get access to a special Breath attack they can use once per Short Rest, which deals elemental damage in a directional AoE. They also get 50% Resistance to the same element. The damage element in question depends on which Dragonborn variant you choose.

The Fire and Poison variants are slightly better because many enemies attack with these damage types, making resistance to them more valuable. But don’t let this stop you from using whichever type of Dragonborn you like the most.

Since we’ll be spending a lot of time in close range, the Dragonborn Breath attacks can fit in quite nicely with the Cleric playstyle..

Cantrips

In the Class menu, you need to choose three Cantrips to start the game with, from four options. We recommend getting the following Cantrips:

  • Guidance – This is a great ability for out-of-combat situations, and can be cast either on yourself or on an active ally from within the dice roll screen, letting you gain 1d4 boost to a range of dice rolls.
  • Resistance – Bolster the target’s defences, giving them a 1d4 bonus to Saving Throws. This is a Concentration Spell. Can be used in some dialogue encounters in the same way as Guidance, but these are a bit less common.
  • Sacred Flame – This is the Cleric’s main damage Cantrip. It suffers from low hit chance because enemies can perform a Wisdom Saving Throw to completely block the damage. Still, there are situations in BG3 where Radiant Damage is really good and I’ve seen this hit for over 80 damage, so it’s worth slotting as long as you know its limitations. Check the hit chance before casting, and if it’s below 70%, check for better options before proceeding.

Spells

You’ll need to choose four Spells to prepare, from a list of 10 known Spells. We recommend choosing the following Spells:

  • Guiding Bolt– This is a must-pick, because it can deal up to 24 ranged damage right from the start of the game, which is very nice early-game damage. As a bonus, the next person to attack the target will have an Advantage against them.
  • Healing Word– Heals the target. This spell is very useful because it can be used at range and it only costs a Bonus Action, so you can attack or cast another spell on the same turn.
  • bg3 bane actionBane– Imposes a 1d4 debuff to Attack Rolls, Ability Checks and Saving Throws. It can be used against multiple enemies. Targets can roll a Saving Throw to negate the debuff, though.
  • Inflict Wounds – Deals up to 30 Necrotic damage to an enemy. It can be upcast for more damage later in the game. The problem with this spell is that it only works in melee range. But it can hit really hard. Only use it when the hit chance is decent (at least 70%), otherwise it becomes another Sacred Flame situation.

Subclass – Life Domain

Your Life Domain subclass grants you a unique Passive from the beginning of the game, along with two Domain Spells (which are always prepared and automatically added to your action bar):

  • Proficiency with bg3 heavy armour icon Heavy Armour
  • bg3 disciple of life icon Disciple of Life – All of your Healing Spells heal for more – the extra amount will always be 2 + the spell slot level. So a Level 1 Healing spell will gain 3 extra healing, a level 2 spell will be 4 extra, etc.
  • Domain Spells:
    • bg3 cure wounds icon Cure Wounds – While Cure Wounds appears to offer more healing potential than Healing Word, it is usually a worse option because it costs a full Action rather than a Bonus Action, and it has a much shorter range. You should use Healing Word instead in almost all cases. This spell comes with the Life Domain subclass, so you will unlock it anyway.
    • bless icon bg3 Bless – Target up to three Allies, giving them a buff on Attack Rolls and Saving Throws. This improves the attack and defense of your allies, which can be really handy. Note that this is a Concentration Spell, so casting it will break any other Concentration effect you have active. Use this when fighting early-game boss enemies like the Gnolls on Risen Road – it’s going to help a lot while you’re stuck with weak early-game weapons.

Background & Skills

This build will have very good Wisdom and decent Dexterity, so it’s best to pick a Background that aligns with that. The most obvious choice is Folk Hero, which gives us Animal Handling and Survival, both Wisdom Skills, but you can deviate from this if you want to.

This Cleric Build features high Wisdom and Dexterity scores, so it is best to play to our strength and focus on Skills that align with these Abilities.

For our Background, we chose Folk Hero, which gives the following Skill Proficiencies:

  • Animal Handling (WIS) – Your character is better at taming and communicating with animals. This is a Skill roll that appears in dialogue in some situations, and can open up alternative dialogue options when successful.
  • Survival (WIS) – Impacts your chance to successfully identify buried treasure when exploring the wilds.

You can choose two more Skills from a limited list of Cleric Skills. Of the available options, we recommend choosing these:

  • Insight (WIS) – Helps you read NPC’s behaviour and detect lies and hidden details.
  • Medicine (WIS) – Occasionally used in dialogue to heal or soothe injured characters.

If you chose the Human race, you get one more unrestricted skill pick. If this applies to you, I recommend selecting Acrobatics (DEX) for your final skill, which will make your character more resistant to enemy attempts to push you (it can be life-saving, because the AI loves to push characters off ledges).

Abilities

The most important attribute for this build is Wisdom, which will be used as our Spellcasting Attribute. This means that the accuracy and efficacy of our Spells are determined by your Wisdom Modifier, so we’re focusing on Wisdom as much as we can.

Next up is Constitution. This gives you more HP, lets you Resist a lot of debilitating debuffs that you’ll encounter throughout your playthrough, and gives you better odds at maintaining Concentration on a Spell when you take damage.

Dexterity also needs to be mentioned. It gives us some extra Armour Class, but we are going to be wearing Medium Armour for this build, which limits the Armour benefit from Dexterity to +2. You get 1 AC per Dexterity Modifier, and 1 Dexterity Modifier per 2 points of Dexterity above 10, so we’ll be setting our Dexterity to 14. There’s little point in going any higher than this for this build.

As for the rest of your Attributes, we recommend having Strength at 10 because you may sometimes attack with a melee weapon in a pinch, and Charisma at 10 because it means you won’t be debuffed in (most) dialogue dice rolls. We don’t have any use for Intelligence, so we’re leaving that at 8 points.

This gives us:

  • 10 Strength
  • 14 Dexterity
  • 16 Constitution
  • 8 Intelligence
  • 16 Wisdom
  • 10 Charisma

(Most important Abilities are bolded)

Levelling Progression for BG3 Healer Build

Here, we are going to take you through the levelling progression of the Healer Build for Baldur’s Gate 3. We’ve included our recommended choices at each level, but feel free to experiment if you want.

Early Game Levelling Guide for the BG3 Healer Build

Here are the first few levels explained.

Level 2

After hitting Level 2, you will unlock an extra Level 1 Spell Slot, along with the following abilities:

  • Turn Undead – Present your holy symbol and pray. Each undead that can see or hear you is Turned, and must spend its turns fleeing from you until it takes damage or succeeds a Saving Throw.
  • bg3 preserve life icon Preserve Life – Heal allied creatures for HP equal to 3 x Cleric Level. Costs a Channel Divinity Charge

You can also choose one more spell to prepare. bg3 command icon Command is a good choice, as it can act as a decent early-game crowd control effect, or be used to disarm an enemy.

Level 3

At Level 3, your Healer Build gets another Level 1 Spell Slot, as well as two Level 2 Spell Slots.

You’ll unlock the following Domain Spells, which are always Prepared:

  • aid icon bg3 Aid – Increase the maximum HP of your party by 5. Also applies to summoned creatures and temporary allies.
    • Important: Make it a routine to cast Aid after every Long Rest to buff your party’s maximum HP. If your party has any long-term summons (such as familiars, the Beastmaster Ranger’s animal companion or conjured elemental creatures), summon them before using Aid so that they also get the buff. Later on, you can upcast Aid to increase the HP amount by a further 5 per upcast level. This simple routine makes BG3’s combat significantly more forgiving.
  • bg3 lesser restoration icon Lesser Restoration – Cure an adjacent creature of the Diseased, Poisoned, Paralysis or Blinded conditions.

You can also choose one other Spell to prepare. We now have access to Second Level Spells.

We recommend preparing the prayer of healing icon bg3 Prayer of Healing spell, an AOE heal that will restore 2d8 HP to allies within a 9 metre radius of you. Later on you can Upcast the spell – each Upcast level will add another 1d8 to the healing.

Level 4

At Level 4, you’ll unlock another Level 2 Spell Slot.

You can choose another Cantrip here – we’ll get  Thaumaturgy, which occasionally is useful in dialogue checks.

You will need to choose a Feat at Level 4, too. It’s recommended to get the Ability Improvement Feat, which will give you two more Ability Points to spend. Put them both into Wisdom, increasing it to 18.

Increasing your Wisdom also increases the number of spells you can have prepared, in addition to the slot you always get from leveling up. This means we can choose two new spells at Level 4:

  • Spiritual Weapon – Summon a spiritual weapon to help you in combat. The weapon can be controlled and deals Force Damage. This is good for dealing extra damage in the early-game, and it’s also good for distracting enemies when you’re outnumbered. Enemies will often waste their time attacking this instead of your party members. It only has 20 HP, but it is resistant to most damage, so it’s good for this purpose.
  • Enhance Ability – Choose an ability and give yourself or an ally Advantage in all checks of that ability until you lose Concentration on the spell. This is a very powerful buff for both combat and non-combat situations, but it does prevent you from casting any other Concentration spells.

Mid Game Levelling Guide for the BG3 Life Cleric Build

We will now go over the mid-game portion of levelling up your Baldur’s Gate 3 Life Domain Cleric. This section covers levels 5-8.

Level 5

At Level 5, you unlock another Level 2 Spell Slot, along with a Level 3 Spell Slot for your Healer Build in Baldur’s Gate 3.

You’ll gain access to the following passives and domain spells:

  • destroy undead icon bg3 Destroy Undead – Undead successfully bg3 turned icon Turned by you take 4d6 bg3 radiant icon Radiant Damage.
  • Scaling Cantrips – Your damaging Cantrips gain an additional 1d8 damage
  • revivify icon bg3 Revivify – Allows you to revive a downed or dead companion. Now you don’t need to worry about stocking up on expensive Revivification Scrolls!
  • bg3 beacon of hope icon Beacon of Hope – Requires Concentration. You and your allies within 9 metres gain bg3 Advantage icon Advantage on Wisdom Saving Throws, Death Saving Throws, and will always receive the maximum possible number of Hitpoints from Healing spells. This is really useful for maximising your healing output.

You can also choose one new spell to prepare.

I recommend choosing bg3 mass healing word icon Mass Healing Word. This has the same effect as Healing Word, except it can be cast on up to 6 creatures at once. It heals for 4 HP plus your Wisdom Modifier, resulting in a healing range of 5-9 on each target at the moment. This can be increased later on by increasing your Wisdom further, and by Upcasting the spell. This spell offers great value, but if you are not in combat, you should use Prayer of Healing (or a Short Rest) instead.

Level 6

At Level 6, you will unlock another Level 3 Spell Slot, and an extra Channel Divinity Charge, giving you an extra cast of Preserve Life per Short Rest.

You also earn the bg3 blessed healer icon Blessed Healer passive, which heals you when you cast a healing spell on another creature. The healing value will be 2 + the level of the spell cast.

You can choose one more spell to prepare at this level. I recommend going with spirit guardians icon bg3 Spirit Guardians – this creates an AOE around you that slows down and damages enemies with either bg3 radiant icon Radiant Damage or bg3 necrotic icon Necrotic Damage. The Radiant variant is especially useful in Act II, due to the high concentration of undead enemies.

Level 7

At Level 7, you will gain access to fourth-level spells, unlocking one level 4 spell slot to cast them with.

You will unlock the following Domain Spells (always Prepared) from your Life Domain subclass:

  • guardian of faith icon bg3 Guardian of Faith – Summon an immobile guardian that attacks nearby enemies, dealing 20 bg3 radiant icon Radiant Damage per attack. Every time it attacks, the guardian also takes the damage that it dealt.
  • death ward icon bg3 Death Ward – When the target’s health falls to 0, they heal by 1 HP instead of being bg3 downed icon Downed.

You can also Prepare another spell.

We recommend getting glyph of warding icon bg3 Glyph of Warding – a powerful AOE spell that will considerably improve the damage potential of your healer build. While Healing is the main focus of your build, some versatility is still required so it’s good to include a few spells like this.

Level 8

At Level 8 you can choose another Feat. Get Ability Improvement and increase your Wisdom to 20.

With the increase in Wisdom, you will be able to slot two more spells this level. The following two are good options:

  • freedom of movement icon bg3 Freedom of Movement – The target gains Freedom of Movement until Long Rest. They are immediately snapped out of any Stun, can no longer be slowed down by Difficult Terrain and cannot be magically Paralysed or Restrained.
  • bg3 remove curse icon Remove Curse – This is a very situational spell but can occasionally be very useful, so it’s worth having it available. You can touch any creature with this spell to immediately cure Curses and Hexes.

You also gain bg3 divine strike icon Divine Strike: Radiant, which infuses your weapon attacks with a 1d8 extra bg3 radiant icon Radiant Damage, once per Turn.

Late-Game Levelling Guide for the BG3 Life Cleric Build

We will now cover the latter levels for this BG3 Life Cleric Healer Build, levels 9-12. In this section, your Cleric will begin unlocking very powerful spells that can make them a huge asset to your party.

Level 9

At Level 9 the Cleric unlocks fifth level spells, granting access to some very powerful effects, both defensive and offensive.

You gain the following Domain Spells, which are always Prepared:

  • greater restoration icon bg3 Greater Restoration – Touch a creature and remove any Charm, Petrification, Stun or Curse.
  • mass cure wounds icon bg3 Mass Cure Wounds – Heals allies within 18 metres for 3d8 + Wisdom Modifier. If you followed the guide, your Wisdom Modifier is currently 5, so the heal per target will be between 8 and 29. This is a very strong healing spell that can save your party from an untimely demise.

You can choose one more spell to prepare for your Healer Build in BG3. I recommend insect plague icon bg3 Insect Plague. While this doesn’t seem to fit too well with the theme of a healer build, this spell is simply too good to ignore. It fills a large AOE with a locust swarm that slows down enemies and deals 4d10 bg3 piercing icon Piercing Damage to creatures within, every turn. The best AoE spell in the game, in my opinion.

Level 10

At Level 10, you’ll gain another fifth level spell slot.

You unlock the following Cleric feature:

  •  Divine Intervention – Once per character, invoke your god’s aid. When activating this, you can choose from:
    • Sunder the Heretical Deal 8-80 Radiant Damage to a group of enemies.
    • Arm Thy Servant – Grants you a Legendary weapon.
    • Opulent Revival – Resurrect fallen Companions with half health and restore nearby allies as if they had Long Rested.
    • Golden Generosity – Provides a rich bounty of Potions and Camp Supplies.

Note that you can only use Divine Intervention once per character, so you can either get the weapon, the supplies or save the damage/healing for an emergency.

Your damaging Cantrips will gain another 1d8 damage die at this level, and you can also choose another Cantrip to slot. We already got all of the important Cantrips, so the choice is entirely yours.

You can unlock another spell. I recommend bg3 hold monster icon Hold Monsterwhich allows you to stun any creature in the game. Creatures stunned by Hold Monster are defenceless, and all melee attacks against them are guaranteed Critical Hits.

Level 11

At Level 11, you gain access to sixth level spells, the most powerful level of magic in Baldur’s Gate 3.

As usual, you can prepare one more spell. Get heroes feast icon bg3 Heroes’ Feasta powerful buff spell that grants you a cache of camping supplies and applies the following benefits to all party members:

  • Immune to Poison and Disease
  • Cannot be Frightened
  • Extra 12 HP
  • Advantage on Wisdom Saving Throws

Important: You should add Heroes’ Feast to the routine of casting Aid after each Long Rest. Upcasting Aid to Fifth Level combined with Heroes’ Feast will give all party members and summoned creatures 37 extra HP, along with the aforementioned benefits.

Level 12

At Level 12, you can choose one more Feat for your Life Cleric Build. Picking up War Caster is a good idea, as it gives you Advantage on Concentration Checks. Since the Cleric often spends a lot of time in close proximity to enemies while also spellcasting, this is really helpful for making your Concentration Spells more resilient. As a bonus, War Caster also lets you zap enemies who get too close with lightning.

In addition, you can choose one more spell to prepare. I reccomend the bg3 heal spell Heal spell. This is a single-target burst heal that is guaranteed to restore 70 HP, avoiding the RNG of other healing spells.

Wapira’s Crown

Wapira’s Crown restores 1d6 HP to you whenever you heal another creature. Obtained from Zevlor for helping during the Save the Refugees quest.

Slippery Chain Shirt

While wearing the Slippery Chain Shirt, creatures you heal will automatically Disengage on their next turn, preventing them from recieving Opportunist attacks when they move away from a melee enemy. Found in a chest on a cliff in the Festering Cove, in the Underdark in Act I.

Hellrider’s Pride

When wearing Hellrider’s Pride, when you heal a creature, they recieve Blade Ward for 2 turns, granting 50% resistance to Bludgeoning, Piercing and Slashing damage. Obtained from Zevlor, by purchasing them, pickpocketing them or receiving them as a reward for completing the Investigate Kagha quest.

Boots of Aid and Comfort

With the Boots of Aid and Comfort, when you heal a creature, they also recieve 3 Temporary Hit Points. Sold by Grat the Trader in the Goblin Camp. If the item is missing, try again after completing a Long Rest – this should reset their wares.

Cloak of Protection

The Cloak of Protection provides a +1 bonus to your Saving Throws and Armour Class, providing a modest but useful defensive buff. Purchased from Quartermaster Talli at Last Light Inn, in Act II. More info here.

Amulet of Restoration

The Amulet of Restoration gives you a free cast of Healing Word and Mass Healing Word, once per Long Rest. Sold by Derryth Bonecloak in the Myconid Colony, in the Underdark.

The Whispering Promise

While wearing the Whispering Promise, when you heal a creature, they also become Blessed for 2 turns, gaining a 1d4 bonus to their Attack Rolls and Saving Throws. This item can appear in multiple vendors in Act I, including Volo, Grat the Trader and Roah Moonglow. If you cannot find it, try to Long Rest and then try again. This is a great starter item for our BG3 Healer Build.

Ring of Salving

When wearing the Ring of Salving, when you heal a creature, they receive an extra 2 HP in healing. Purchased from Omeluum in the Myconid Colony. You must complete his side quest before he will trade with you.

Blood of Lathander

The Blood of Lathander is a Legendary mace that can make Act II considerably easier to deal with, as it emits light and grants a weaker version of the Sunbeam spell. While weaker than the Sunbeam that some classes can unlock in the latter stages of the game, it’s still a very powerful damaging ability at this stage of the game. The Blood of Lathander is hidden in the secret chamber of the Rosymorn Monastery, accessible by rotating two statues.

Shield of Devotion

With Shield of Devotion equipped, when you are hit with a melee attack, you can use your Reaction to attempt to knock the attacker Prone. The shield also gives a weaker version of the Aid spell to the wielder, however I do not recommend that you use it, as it will override the stronger version that is recommended earlier in the guide. This shield can be purchased from Quartermaster Talli at Last Light Inn.

Spellthief

Spellthief is a Longbow that restores a Level 1 Spell Slot to you when you land a Critical Hit with the weapon. It is sold by Arron in the Druid Grove.

If you would prefer to instead have a bow that is slightly more accurate and can roll slightly higher damage, then go for the Longbow +1 – this can be purchased from either Grat the Trader, Roah Moonglow, or Brem in the Zhentarim Hideout.

Late-Game Equipment for our Healer Build in Baldur’s Gate 3

Helm of Balduran

The Helm of Balduran is a powerful Legendary helmet that heals the wearer every turn, and reduces their damage taken. Obtaining it is a multi-step process – we wrote a guide about it which you can find here.

Flame Enamelled Armour

The Flame Enamelled Armour gives you a +2 bonus to your Initiative Rolls, making it more likely that you will take your turn before other creatures. It can be looted from a chest in Wyrm’s Rock Fortress.

The Reviving Hands

The Reviving Hands are a more powerful version of Hellrider’s Pride and thus perfect for our BG3 Healer Build. When you heal a creature, the creature gains Blade Ward for 2 turns. When you Revive a creature, the creature gains Death Ward. You also get one free use of the Revivify spell per Long Rest. The gloves can be bought from Vicar Humbletoes in Stormshore Tabernacle, Lower City, Act III.

Helldusk Boots

The Helldusk Boots prevent you from being forcibly moved by an enemy, as well as giving immunity to the effects of Difficult Terrain. They allow you to use your Reaction to automatically succeed a Saving Throw that you would have otherwise failed, allowing you to retain your Concentration on spells or resist enemy effects. They also give you the Hellcrawler action, allowing you to teleport and deal fire damage at the target location. These boots are found in a locked Gilded Chest on the top floor of Wyrm’s Rock Fortress.

Spellcrux Amulet

The Spellcrux Amulet allows you to restore one spell slot, of any level, once per Long Rest. This is especially good for this build in the late game, as it allows you to use Heroes’ Feast and then recover your Level 6 Spell Slot, so you can cast another Level 6 Spell such as Heal. Looted from the Warden in Moonrise Towers Prison, Act II.

Devotee’s Mace

The Devotee’s Mace grants you an action that creates an aura. The aura will heal all nearby allies within for 1d4 HP every turn, for 10 turns. To obtain the Devotee’s Mace, you need to reach Level 10 with a Cleric and use the Arm Thy Servant Divine Intervention. Note that if you want to save the Divine Intervention on your healer for a different effect, such as the heal or damage, you can respec another character in your party to a Cleric, summon the mace, then respec them back to their original build. Alternatively, you can hire a Cleric hireling and get them to summon the mace for you.

Viconia’s Walking Fortress

Viconia’s Walking Fortress is a legendary shield that acts as a considerably more powerful replacement for the Shield of Devotion. When you take a melee attack, you can use your Reaction to attempt to knock them prone and deal 2d4 Force Damage. It also grants you the Warding Bond and Reflective Shell actions. You can loot the shield from Viconia in the Sharran hideout, beneath the House of Grief in Act III.

Life Domain Cleric Build Extra Info

In this section is some additional information that will help you to get the most out of this Baldur’s Gate 3 Life Cleric Healer Build.

Overpowered Gear Combo for our Healer Build BG3

Here is a quick explanation to why the above equipment items synergize so well with each other for our best Healer Build in BG3.

This build includes several items that provide buffs to a creature when you heal them:

The build comes with several different ways to trigger these powerful buffs on your allies:

Feel free to change some of the gear mentioned in this guide if you find something you want to try out. Understanding the items mentioned in this section is one of the most important aspects for getting the most out of this build, however.

How to Play the Life Cleric – BG3

Early-Game

For the first few levels, Clerics can feel quite weak because they do poor damage in melee and their main Cantrip (sacred flame icon bg3 Sacred Flame) is prone to failure. During these levels, its best to use your magic to support your team with support spells like bless icon bg3 Bless and healing word icon bg3 Healing Word. The Life Domain Cleric places extra emphasis on healing magic, so I recommend focusing on this whenever you have damaged allies.

When you’re not casting spells, use your ranged weapon to deal damage from afar. If your chosen race has Proficiency with bg3 longbows icon Longbows or bg3 heavy crossbow icon Heavy Crossbows, try to get your hands on one of these, as they deal good early-game damage. But you can use a standard bow if not. When Concentrating on a spell like bless icon bg3 Bless, try to stay safe from enemy attacks by using distance and sight obstructions to prevent them from hitting you. This minimises the chance that your Concentration will be broken. Watch the terrain, too – stepping on a puddle of poison can be enough to break your Concentration if you are unlucky!

One good single-target damage spell Clerics can use from the beginning of the game is inflict wounds icon bg3 Inflict Wounds. This spell also scales really well with upcasting, so you can keep using it for burst damage for most of the game.

From Level 3 onwards, begin casting aid icon bg3 Aid after every Long Rest to boost your team’s max HP.

Mid-Game

When you reach level 5, you begin to unlock some much stronger damage spells like glyph of warding icon bg3 Glyph of Warding and spirit guardians icon bg3 Spirit Guardians. You can also upcast aid icon bg3 Aid progressively higher as you level up, adding another 5 HP per Spell Slot Level. I recommend doing this after every Long Rest to make your party more resilient.

spirit guardians icon bg3 Spirit Guardians creates an AoE of Radiant or Necrotic Damage that follows your Cleric around. You can cast the spell and run through a crowd of enemies, hitting all of them. Just beware of opportunity attacks.

From Level 8 onwards, you get the bg3 divine strike icon Divine Strike feature, infusing 1d8 bonus damage into your weapon attacks once per turn. This is helpful on those turns when casting a spell isn’t possible or appropriate.

Late-Game

At Level 9, you unlock insect plague icon bg3 Insect Plague, a huge AoE that deals heavy damage and slows enemies down significantly.

If you collect the equipment recommended in the guide above, you will find that your Spells and Cantrips succeed more reliably thanks to your boosted Spell Save DC. You should now be able to make much more reliable use of your debuff and control spells like hold person icon bg3 Hold Person.

At Level 11, you should be upcasting aid icon bg3 Aid to Level 5 and combining it with the heroes feast icon bg3 Heroes’ Feast spell to give a massive 33-point HP boost to your party.

The playstyle of the Cleric stays rather similar throughout your playthrough. You are using your Concentration spells to control the battlefield, while sometimes using an AoE spell or single-target burst spell. On the remainder of your turns you are using your weapons to chip away at enemies, and staying out of the way of enemy attacks to keep your spell Concentration safe. In the Late-game, you have much stronger spells to use, but the core playstyle remains the same.

Cleric Build Illithid Powers (optional)

BG3 Illithid Powers Skill tree

Illithid Powers are unlocked later in BG3 when you learn more about Mind Flayers and Tadpoles. By eating Jars of Mind Flayer Parasites you gain one point. This is another optional skill tree that you can get access to if you want. Here are some of the best Illithid Powers for the BG3 Cleric Build with the Life Domain subclass:

  •  Concentrated Blast: Allows you to deal extra damage to a target when you are Concentrating on a spell, potentially also healing if the target is Concentrating too.
  •  Cull the Weak: When you reduce a creature’s hit points below a certain threshold, this power instantly kills it and deals 1-4 Psychic Damage to nearby enemies. This is particularly effective when engaging groups of weaker foes, enabling you to thin their numbers rapidly. You have quite a few AoE spells, which are pretty good at activating this effect.
  •  Fly: This can be used to reach hard to get to places or change positions in combat.
  •  Black Hole: This power creates an area-based effect that pulls in and slows targets. It’s particularly useful for crowd control, allowing you to cluster enemies together for area-of-effect attacks or to isolate them from vulnerable allies.
  •  Psionic Backlash: This is a top-tier Reaction from the Illithid Powers skill tree in BG3. This allows you to deal Psychic Damage when a nearby enemy casts a spell. This is especially useful if the target is casting a Concentration Spell. The damage from Psionic Backlash can immediately break their Concentration, ending the spell’s effects.
