In this all-encompassing ESO Scribing Guide you will find out how to unlock the Scribing System, explanations and locations of Grimoires and Scripts. How to unlock each script, location info and everything else you will ever need to know about Scribing ESO. For updated builds please visit the ESO Builds overview page. ESO Skill Styling is also another new feature in the Gold Road Chapter.

ESO Scribing introduces new unlockable skills to the existing skill lines, which can be modified to your liking. For example, you can now create your own Damage Shield with (almost) any effect you want. Or a new AoE explosion skill, almost anything is possible!

The ESO Scribing System was created by Ulfsild, also known as Archmage Ulfsild the Evergreen, Warrior-witch of Kyne’s Aegis, Clever woman of the Druadach and The Pale’s priestess of Jhunal. She created the Scholarium and perfected the art of Scribing. Scribing itself is an art developed with collaboration powerful beings called Luminaries. Ulfsild saw magic itself and developed the art of shaping magic via ink, parchment and quill.

Luminaries in ESO are beings of pure magic that channel magic to the altar, utterly unique, like beams of light emanating from the face of Magnus himself. Each has chosen a shape that suits their personality, following goals and interests entirely of their own choosing. If you ask them where they came from, each of them will give you a different answer. Luminaries understand magic in a way mortals never could and their power freely given will allow you to access the arcane mysteries others could not dream of.

How do you scribe in ESO?

The ESO Scribing System might seem complicated at first, but it will become easier to understand as you delve more into it. What you need is a skill to customize (Grimoire), three Scripts (Focus, Signature and Affix) for the effects and Luminous Ink (crafting currency) to decide what your new skill does. Scribing does not have it’s own skill line and instead you use the system at the Scribing Altar in The Scholarium.

As there is no skill line, you unlock more of the system by completing Luminary Wings which unlock their account-wide Sigils. You will find your Scribed skills and grimoires in the new Scribing tab that is added to your skill assignment window. Unlock requirements and how to get Grimoires, Scripts and Luminous Ink are detailed further down on the guide on their respective categories.

Summary of the ESO Scribing System

  • No separate skill line to level up.
  • The Scribing System is unlocked by completing the Luminary Wing -questlines.
  • Luminary Wing -questlines will unlock account-wide upgrades.
  • You craft skills on a Scribing Altar with a Grimoire and three different types of Scripts.
  • Grimoires and Scripts are character-specific in the ESO Scribing system.
  • You are able to deposit Scripts into your bank to give them to your other characters.
  • Luminous Ink will be consumed for each Script you add or change to your Scribed Skill.
  • Luminous Ink is not bound and can be trader and bought from other players.
  • Scribed skills can be found in it’s respective skill line and the new Scribing tab in your skill assignment window.
  • Not all Scripts can be applied to all Grimoires.
  • Also, not all Scripts that are compatible with a Grimoire are compatible with each other.

ESO Scribing basics with Grimoires and Scripts

Grimoires for Scribing in ESO

Grimoires are the skills you scribe your effects into. No new skill lines are being added to the game so each Grimoire you start with has been added to the existing; Weapon, Mages Guild, Fighters Guild, Assault and Soul Magic skill lines.

How expensive are Grimoires?

Grimoires costs 50,000 gold when you buy it for the first time, but the cost is lowered to 10,000 gold for your other characters. Exceptions are listed below.

  • Soul Burst 10,000 gold. It’s awarded to you after completing the final quest in the Scribing quest line and is discounted for all alt characters.
  • Wield Soul Can not be bought. Every character will need to complete the Scribing Tutorial quest which awards the Wield Soul skill.

Where do I get Grimoires?

The Grimoire and Script Vendor Chronicler Firandil sells all the Grimoires in The Scholarium.

Requirements to unlock Grimoires

  • Complete “The Wing of the Indrik” questline
  • Earn the “Apprentice”-Achievement on the Grimoires skill line.

Scripts explained for the ESO Scribing System

Each ESO Script holds an unique effect that you can apply to your skill. Scripts can be earned through the Scribing questline, daily quest rewards or purchased from the Scholarium and Infinite Archive Vendors.

There are three types of Scripts: Focus, Signature and Affix which are unlocked by doing the Luminary Wings questlines below:

  • Focus scripts – Function: Damage type, healing, stun, pull etc. Unlocked after completing The Wing of the Gryphon
    • Daily Delve quests
    • Daily Mages Guild quests
    • PvP Rewards for the Worthy
  • Signature Scripts – Unique effect: magicka restore, immobilize, damage shield, status effects etc. Unlocked after completing The Wing of the Dragon
    • Daily World Boss quests
    • Daily Cyrodiil quests
    • Daily Fighters Guild quests
    • Mages Guild Script Chase
    • Class Mastery Script Chase
  • Affix Scripts – Final Benefit: major/minor buffs and debuffs. Unlocked after completing The Wing of the Netch
    • World Event quests
    • Daily Imperial City quests
    • Daily Undaunted quests

Once a Script is in your inventory, you can consume it to permanently unlock that Script effect for the ESO Scribing system. Scripts are technically not account wide, but you are able to buy or loot a script on one of your characters and transfer it to your other characters by depositing it in your bank.

Script Drop Chance

100% Guaranteed Script drop from the first daily coffer of each different type of daily quest and a 25% chance for a repeated daily of that type for your account. Nine guaranteed Script drops per day. No duplicate Scripts will drop until you have received all on that character. You can use the achievements to keep track of the Scripts you own: Focus Script Mastery, Affix Script Mastery, Signature Script Mastery, A Signature with Class. All players, regardless of Gold Road ownership, have a very small chance to receive Scripts via world drops, which are unbound and tradeable.

Read the Daily Quest guide on ESO-HUB to locate all the Daily Quest Givers!

You are able to have a character that gets a guaranteed drop on a script since the drops are curated. Collect and use all other Scripts of that category except the one you want to farm and you will always get the missing script. As an example you could use all other Affix Scripts on that character except for the Heroism Script, therefore being able to get 3 Heroism Scripts per day from the three different Affix dailies.

ESO Focus Scripts

Focus Scripts add the main effect to your skill in the ESO Scribing system in the Gold Road Chapter. This might change the type of damage the skill does, or whether the ability targets enemies or allies. Focus Scripts also determine the cost of the ability and whether it takes Magicka or Stamina to use.

Focus Scripts will start dropping from the daily coffer below and can be bought from the vendors after you have unlocked the Sigil of the Luminary Gryphon on one character.

We also have a detailed post about the ESO Scribing Class Mastery Scripts.

Mages Guild Script Chase

Mages Guild Subsidized Scripts can be found from the following base game locations after completing the Wing of the Dragon Scribing quest line. Note thatthe  Mages Guild Subsidized Scripts will not be available until you’ve completed The Wing of the Dragon even if you have the other script types unlocked.

Mages Guild Affix Scripts Chase

ESO Class Mastery Script Chase

ESO Class Mastery Signature is one Script which effect is based on the characters class you use it on. You can acquire the ESO Class Mastery Signature Script after completing Wing of the Dragon by combining 50 Class Script Scraps.  You can keep track of how many class script scraps you have by checking the achievement “Collect 50 Class Mastery Scraps” under Gold Road, Scribing. When you consume your final Class Script Scrap, you will receive the achievement and the Class Mastery Script for the character you are currently on and the Class Script Scraps will no longer drop.

You only need to collect the Class Script Scraps once on one character. You will be able to purchase the Class Mastery Script from Chronicler Firandil for all your alts.

Luminous Ink for the Scribing System

Luminous Ink is the crafting currency introduced in the Gold Road Chapter for the Scribing System. Luminous Ink is required to complete the ESO Scribing process, sealing the magic within your chosen Grimoire and Scripts. Each Script added or changed on a Scribed Skill consumes one Luminous Ink.

Luminous Ink is not bound to your account so you are able to sell or send it to other players.

How to get Luminous Ink

After completing the Indrik and Netch wings on one character, all of your other characters will be able to get Luminous Ink from the world from defeated enemies and harvested materials.

Best place to farm Luminous Ink from enemies

Any enemies that drop loot, can drop Luminous Ink as well. The best places to farm Luminous Ink will have loads of melee enemies that walk after you and you can kill them fast. Loot in ESO is shared with everyone who damages the enemies, but only drops for the best 12 dps so try to avoid crowded places like Alikir Dolmens.

You can team up with other players to loot the same enemies within your render range without personally doing damage as long as there isn’t more than 12 players around.

In this ESO Grind Guide you can see many popular spots for grinding XP that will also work for Luminous Ink!

Best Place to farm Luminous Ink from harvesting crafting materials

Any area that spawns loads of resource nodes is also good for farming Luminous Ink. Craglorn is regarded as the best place to farm Luminous Ink due to the expensive Fortified Nirncrux and Potent Nirncrux having a chance to drop, but this also makes the zone very crowded. Be sure to slot the Plentiful Harvest Champion Point as it works for Luminous Ink as well so be sure to slot it.

The best places to farm Luminous Ink

Remember to slot the Master Gatherer and Plentiful Harvest Champion Points to get the most out of your farming!

You can find useful gear for fast Luminous Ink farming in this Speedy G build guide.

Alt Characters – how it works

Alternative Character in ESO or alt character is a term for all of your characters that isn’t your main character. Your main character is usually the one you play and like the most, but some people don’t have a main character at all and instead play equally on multiple characters.

You DO NOT need to complete any Scribing Quests on your alt character to be able to earn Luminous Ink and Scripts IF one of your characters has completed all of the Luminary Wings.

ESO Scribing System account wide unlocks- only need to complete once

Completing the Luminary Wings will unlock Sigils, that are account wide, but what does it mean? As an example, when you unlock Sigil of the Indrik, this means all of your characters will get Luminous Ink from monsters without doing any Scribing Quests.

You only need to do the Luminary Wing questlines once and all of your alts are able get Luminous Ink and Scripts!

Focus, Signature and Affix Scripts won’t drop from the daily quests until you complete it’s wing mentioned below. Once you’ve completed a Luminary Wing you can start grinding scripts for all of the characters you want to use the ESO Scribing System on.

Account wide unlocks

ESO Scribing System character specific unlocks – need to do on all characters

You will be able to get Luminous Ink and Scripts on all characters immediately after you’ve completed the Luminary Wings mentioned above on one character. You will not be able to access the Scribing Altar to Scribe Skills until you complete the Second Era of Scribing, Tutorial Quest. The Scribing Tutorial Quest takes approximately 5-10 minutes to complete.

You do not need to complete any Scribing Quests on your alt character to be able to earn Luminous Ink and Scripts IF one of your characters has completed all of the Luminary Wings.

The biggest ESO Scribing Grind comes from acquiring all the different Scripts for your alt characters. The tutorial quest gives you three free Scripts: Magic DamageLingering Torment and Breach. The other free Scripts you earn with your main Bound Focus Script: HealingBound Signature Script: Sage’s RemedyBound Affix Script: Resolve and Bound Affix Script: Off Balance can be bought from the Scholarium Merchant for 10 Gold (not 10k, just 10 gold).

Scripts are not account wide. You will need to farm or buy each script separately for each of your characters but you are able to deposit them into your bank to give them to your other characters.

Best ESO Scribing Skill Combinations

Below is a small selection of Scribed Skill Combinations for Tanks, Healers, Damage Dealers, Solo Players, PvP and some fun stuff. None of the skill combinations use class scripts to make them more accessible. You should customize the Grimoires effects based on the sets and content you plan to do, as many of the buffs/debuffs can be acquired from multiple sources. Each Grimoire has around 300 combinations you can create and all the scripts and grimoires have over 4000 combinations total in the ESO Scribing system!

Each of the skill examples can and should be modified to your groups need. Tanks in trials and dungeons might want different effects so remember to communicate with your group!

An AOE (area of effect) pull, great for trash in dungeons. Change the scripts based on your preference.

Leashing Soul

Single target magicka pull that taunts, restores resources and reduces enemy damage. You can use this when you don’t want to use Silver Leash.

Warding Contingency

An AOE shield that also reduces the damage you and your allies take by .

  • Grimoire Ulfsild’s Contingency
  • Focus Script Damage Shield
  • Signature Script Gladiator’s Tenacity
  • Affix Script Protection
  • Scribing Simulator skill link

Heroic Torch

An ultimate generation skill for an off tank in a trial as an example. Change the Affix Script if your group is using ultimate generation potions.

  • Grimoire Torchbearer
  • Focus Script Generate Ultimate
  • Signature Script Gladiator’s Tenacity
  • Affix Script Heroism
  • Scribing Simulator skill link

The Best ESO Scribing Skills for Healers

Heals get to pick from two great choices in the ESO Scribing system, Mender’s Bond and Dazing Explosion. Mender’s Bond allows you to transfer damage to you and heal your allies in the beam. Dazing Explosion can be used to get AOE minor Brittle debuff.

Mender’s Bond

Transfer damage to you and heal your allies that stand in the beam. If you have an arcanist in your group, they can slot Zenas’ Empowering Disc Skill and you can change the Affix Script to Protection as an example.

Dazing Explosion

A good source of AOE Minor Brittle for trash in Dungeons/Trials. Change the other effects based on your groups needs.

The Best ESO Scribing Skills for Damage Dealers

Damage Dealers don’t have many great picks right now for group content and the grimoires will not be replacing any spammable skill. The only skill that actually improves your overall damage is Venomous Knife. However, most other skills can also deal good damage but often there are slightly better alternatives.

Venomous Knife

  • Grimoire Traveling Knife
  • Focus Script Poison Damage
  • Signature Script Warrior’s Opportunity
  • Affix Script Berserk
  • Scribing Simulator skill link

In group content like Trials, the Warrior’s Opportunity script (8% increased martial damage taken) becomes very useful if the group has players that deal bleed, physical, and disease damage. Change the other Scripts based on your liking.
Fiery Explosion

Shocking Soul

The Best ESO Scribing Skills for Solo Players

You can scribe great unique skills that fit your character in the content you play. You can add healing, stuns, roots and many other effects you need.

Warding Burst

Warding Burst gives you a shield, gives you ultimate and increases your resistances.

The Best Scribing Skills for PVP

Sundering Throw

PvP player Decimus recommends using Sundering Throw as a spammable for bash builds. You can then use Reverberating Bash as your stun skill.

Sundering Knife

PvP player Decimus recommends the Traveling Knife Grimoire with Major Prophecy/Savagery for Arcanists or Necromancers as they don’t get this buff from their class. For example an Arcanist can use Sundering Knife instead of Camouflaged Hunter.

  • Grimoire Traveling Knife
  • Focus Script Physical Damage
  • Signature Script Assassin’s Misery
  • Affix Script Savagery and Prophecy
  • Scribing Simulator skill link

Healing Soul

PvP player Decimus mentions that you can use Healing Soul as your spammable heal as it heals, restores resources and grants you Major Vitality.

Shocking Soul

PvP player Decimus recommends using Shocking Souls as your new spammable skill as it does Shocking damage in addition to Oblivion damage over time and reduces your enemies damage.

The Best ESO Scribing Skills for Fun

There are quite a variety of silly and non-optimized skills you are able to scribe!

Repelling Torch

Knock back your enemies by sweeping a torch!

Dazing Trample

Stun your enemies, slow them down and reduce their max health by 10% with a mount of your choosing!

Is ESO Scribing the Same as Spellcrafting?

Spellcrafting has been high on the list of many ESO players’ most desired features for ESO for many years, and many are asking if Scribing is simply another name for Spellcrafting.

The best answer to this question is “not quite”. Spellcrafting in other games like TES IV: Oblivion gave players a great deal of free reign to reshape the magic system and create spells as they saw fit. Scribing on the other hand gives you some free reign, but you must stay within certain constraints, you cannot freely pick and choose any effects from the game and mash them together, you can only work with what is offered by the Grimoires and Scripts available in the game.

Responding to questions on the matter, Zenimax explicitly stated that Scribing is not Spellcrafting, but a “precursor to Spellcrafting”. There are two interpretations of this statement – either this means that Scribing is a test run and full Spellcrafting is going to be added eventually, or it is merely referring to the lore surrounding Spellcrafting – ESO is set around 1,000 years before the other Elder Scrolls games, and the mages of Tamriel haven’t yet attained sufficient mastery over magic to devise entirely new spells as they see fit.

ESO Skill Styling System- Skill Transmog

The Gold Road will also finally add Skills Styling for ESO as part of the Scribing system. Styling will allow you to change the looks of Skills visual FX. That means you could turn a red fire breath into a purple fire breath. There will be 22 styles available when the Gold Road launches.
