This Dragon’s Dogma 2 Sorcerer Build is the highest form of offensive elemental magick. It functions much like a cannon in the backline. The more devastating skills from Sorcerer take longer to cast, so positioning and situational awareness will be especially important when playing this build. As the Sorcerer Vocation is an Advanced Vocation, it requires a quest to unlock. Starting with the Mage Vocation will provide more effective offensive stats in magick as well as magick defense with a lower amount of health and defense.
For a full listing of all of the Sorcerer skills, please see the Dragon’s Dogma 2 Sorcerer Guide. If you want to unlock the Sorcerer check out our How to Unlock the Sorcerer Vocation in Dragon’s Dogma 2 guide.
Table of Contents:
Skills
Here we will discuss the Skills used on the Dragon’s Dogma 2 Sorcerer Build. The Sorcerer Build uses the following Skills:
Situational Skills
Levin – [ High Levin ]
An offensive skill using elemental lightning damage that is well suited for range and closer range. It also excels at striking flying targets. One of the perks of Levin is it can be fired repeatedly to finish off targets you want out of the fight sooner rather than later. This should be used early in the Sorcerer leveling and often, but may fall off comparatively to Frigor late game given the desired resists.
Hagol – [ High Hagol ]
Hagol is an ice blizzard which has a significant radius once upgraded and can freeze targets of all size in an area while dealing significant damage. This becomes a highly effective control tool as well as a great utility between lining up your next skill. Given we can get this casted quickly, we should keep this in our arsenal at all times for control purposes.
Prescient Flare – [ Augural Flare ]
Flare may seem underwhelming at first when it doesn’t explode properly, but thats because you need to apply attacks in conjunction with the Flares. Pawn’s assisting and attacking the weakpoints can be enough or additional direct attacks. Flare can be targeted on weak points of larger creatures and will scale up damage that will make it one of the highest precision target damaging skills in the game. Use it for dragons and anything that has a lot of health.
Meteoron
Meteoron isn’t affected by Quickspell but can be worth the effort in larger fights. It delivers high damage and is effective at knocking down large targets when it happens to hit their heads, which has a decent probability.
Situational Skills
Of all of the previous skills, I would always keep Prescient Flare and Hagol. Levin and Meteoron can be rotated out, especially as you get into tougher targets later in the game. I found myself having a preference of Frigor and Hagol together and not needing lightning at all. Seism is a very effective skill as well, but I find Hagol providing extra utility in providing more freezing on larger targets as well as controlling.
Frigor – [ High Frigor ]
Great damage for a quick cast and also provides very effective knockdown for the Sorcerer. In the Unmoored World, I had preference to using Frigor for smaller inbetween fights and assisting with knockdowns. At all stages of the game, Frigor is a great skill.
Seism – [ High Seism ]
Seism is a physical skill that hits a large area and knocks down effectively as well. It’s an all round great skill and can be used into the later game as well. I found redundancy with it’s utility as far as Hagol provided, with more control across the board in Hagol while it also froze and damaged dragons.
Maelstrom
This skill is not affected by Quickspell, but will bring havoc to ground and air while having a high uptime. It is effective against most targets and doesn’t really miss as long as you get a target when you release the cast, but it can be outclassed by specific combinations of other skills such as Hagol and Flare. It is still a lot of fun to use though.
Salamander – [ High Salamander ]
While Flagration is also an option for your fire element, Salamander will linger in an area allowing you freedom to move to your next action. Flagration locks you in a channel animation. High Salamander is a great skill earlier on in the game when you get it and will be highly effective on most smaller groups of mobs. But more difficult monsters and larger mobs are better suited with other elemental options, and this should be replaced later on by Hagol.
Core Skills
Here we will discuss the Core Skills used on the Dragon’s Dogma 2 Sorcerer Build. All Core skills can be learned and are passively applied.
Magick Bolt – Mild light attack bolt that can be effective if the current element matches the target’s weakness. Can be used while regenerating stamina or between spells. Shoots quite rapidly and isn’t half bad for finishing off small enemies.
Galvanize – Activation will allow rapid recovery of stamina. If positioned well in the back of the fight, this will allow you to minimize downtime between heavy spells. This should be prioritized after unloading most of your stamina to begin another follow up series of attacks.
Quickspell – At the cost of draining stamina, cast speed can be hastened. This will be helpful to speed up casts when an enemy appears to be in a position to interrupt before you finish casting. Can be used in tandem with Galvanize to output more damage per second.
Bursting Bolt – A small charged bolt that can be useful against targets with the proper element. Generally, this is intermittent damage or finishing damage as you want to focus on building stamina for large spell casts.
Levitate – This will halt your stamina regeneration while being used but can be useful for reaching difficult places or preventing fall damage. It can be used to get in a better range for a flying target or avoid ground melee damage, but essentially costs potential damage if used unnecessarily.
Augments
Here we will discuss the Augments used on the Dragon’s Dogma 2 Sorcerer Build. Please note that you will also need to partially or fully level up the Archer and Mage Vocations to use all of the Augments mentioned here. If you don’t have them yet, it’s fine to replace them with different Augments until you can unlock them.
- Catalysis (Sorcerer Vocation) – Increases damage dealt when exploiting a hostile target’s elemental weakness.
- Asperity (Sorcerer Vocation) – Increases the likelihood of inflicting debilitations with your attacks.
- Exaltation (Mage Vocation) – Augments your Stamina recovery speed.
- Endurance (Archer Vocation) – Improves your Max Stamina.
- Constancy (Sorcerer Vocation) – Augments your Knockdown Resistance.
- Sagacity (Sorcerer Vocation) – Augments your Magick.
Party Setup for the Sorcerer Build in DD2
This Dragon’s Dogma 2 Sorcerer Build functions primarily as a pure damage dealer, therefore we will add a supportive tank and healer roster around it. Thus we would benefit from the following pawn members:
- Fighter or Warrior Vocation – Included for drawing aggression and acting as a front line for the party. A warrior with taunt can alternatively be used for drawing aggression and assisting with large target focus and knockdown.
- Mage Vocation – This will support our group and front-line healer and potential buffer with Celerity. Additionally, having it equipped with Levin would allow you to synergize your Levin casts with Auxiliary Incanting as well.
- Sorcerer, Warrior or Thief – As you shouldn’t need an Archer here, another melee could help assist on the field and bring physical damage to the party. Additionally, you could consider another Sorcerer if you can recruit one with matching spells to assist in Auxiliary Incanting.
Equipment
This is a setup that you can work towards obtaining as you progress through the game – it is quite expensive especially if you plan to fully upgrade everything, but if you get everything then your character will be very powerful. This is not just a list of the “best items” in the game – there are some items that are stronger than those below but are unreasonably time-consuming to obtain for most players or are only available so late in your playthrough that you will barely get to use them.
Don’t worry if cannot obtain everything on the list right now – just equip the best you have for the time being and replace or upgrade later on when you can.
Item Slot | Item | Description | Where to Find |
---|---|---|---|
Weapon | Lion-Lord’s Archistaff | Great offensive stats and a 10% boost to your Lightning magicks. This is the best Archistaff available before post-game. | Purchase from Grisha’s Armoury in Sacred Arbor for 57,000G. |
Head | Witch’s Hat | Good all-round defence | Purchase from Volcanic Island Armoury for 37,000G. |
Body | Eonian Coat | Great balance between physical and magick defence, along with some elemental and debilitation resistances. | Purchase from Volcanic Island Armoury for 38,000G. |
Legs | Crimson Hosen | The best leg armour available for the Sorcerer before post-game. | Purchase from Volcanic Island Armoury for 32,000G. |
Cloak | Any | Cloaks have a fairly minor impact on stats, so use your best one or the one you find the most visually appealing | N/A |
Left Ring | Ring of Percipience | Increases your Magick by 30. | Purchase from Grisha’s Armoury for 5,000G, OR loot from a chest in Ancestral Chamber near Sacred Arbor, OR loot from Myrddin’s Home in Checkpoint Rest, OR loot from the skeleton-guarded cellar south of Checkpoint Rest. |
Right Ring | Ring of Quickening | Increases your Stamina Recovery Speed by 10%. | Purchase from Volcanic Island Armoury for 10,000G. |
Please note that the purchasable items in the table above may not become available until you progress through the game to a certain point – if you are low level then you will only see fairly weak items in vendors.
The Sorcerer’s primary focus is maintaining sufficient survival while boosting their damage through their Magick value on their weapon. When levelling up, look for Magick-enhancing jewellery or supplementary health early-game. Upgrade armour secondary to keeping the highest damage weapons, as the Sorcerer doesn’t take much damage when it’s able to quickly eliminate its targets from range.
When collecting equipment for your build, you may struggle with your Carrying Capacity being too low, especially in the early game. Fortunately, this is something that can be increased in various ways. We have a guide that explains all of the ways to improve Carry Capacity.
Equipment Upgrades
We recommend upgrading your equipment with the Elven Smithing Style for an increase in the Magick stat of your gear, buffing your damage output with spells.
