This Dragon’s Dogma 2 Trickster Build is unique vocation that does no damage on its own but will provide immense group utility.  We will draw all aggression from enemies and function essentially as a tank and buffer.  As the Trickster Vocation is a Hybrid Vocation, it requires a quest to unlock.  Starting with the Fighter Vocation will provide necessary health and physical defense for this role.

For a full listing of all of the Trickster skills, please see the Dragon’s Dogma 2 Trickster Guide. If you want to unlock the Trickster check out our How to Unlock the Trickster Vocation in Dragon’s Dogma 2 guide.

Trickster Skills

Here we will discuss the Skills used on the Dragon’s Dogma 2 Trickster Build.  The Trickster Build uses the following Skills:

Situational Skills

Sweeping Shroud – [ Suffocating Shroud ]

Activation will draw aggression from all targets in a large area around the target.  This should be an early lead in skill to pull all aggression.  Effigial Incense will create an illusion that all enemies will be drawn to once affected by Sweeping Shroud.  Keep this active on enemies to keep them off your party.

Aromatic Rally – [ Aromatic Resurgance ]

Our group buff that we want to keep up at all times for boosted performance on the party.  This will dramatically increase damage output and make up for the loss of damage that Trickster is unable to provide itself.  Appropriately building offensive pawns will increase the effectiveness of this buff.

Dragon’s Delusion

A wide area flinching tool that will set enemies off balance and allow your party to take advantage of creatures in a weakened state.  When our buffs are up and our illusion is in place, we will be using this skill on a pile that has been drawn together to lower their defenses even more for our party.

Latching Effigy – [ Binding Effigy ]

This is essentially a charm on a target which marks them as a target to be killed by enemies and allies as well.  An effective skill to place on problematic targets in a fight with multiple enemies.

Situational Skills

The only skill I’d consider swapping out is Latching Effigy.  The other 3 are considered your core Trickster setup outside of setting up trap floors for enemies which would likely require 2 skills to swap out.  At that point, Dragon’s Delusion should likely be dropped for a combination of Espial Incense + Fickle Floor.  These two skills together will allow you to create an illusion floor on a cliff, travel an illusion into the air near it, and then taunt enemies to jump over the edge.

Espial Incense – [ Visitant Aura ]

This alone can be swapped out for Latching Effigy for the purposes of scouting your terrain  Outside of scouting areas it doesn’t maintain much use outside of placing out of reach illusions that enemies cannot easily hit.

Fickle Floor – [ Tricky Terrace ]

Fickle Floor is effective to trick enemies into jumping off ledges when used with Espial Incense typically.  It will have limited use outside of this and can make some bodies difficult to reach if the fall is too great.

Core Skills for the Trickster Build in Dragon’s Dogma 2

Here we will discuss the Core Skills (Passives) used on the Dragon’s Dogma 2 Trickster Build.  All Core skills can be learned and are passively applied.

Beveiling Flames – Swing the senser to draw aggression from a target.  Sweeping Shroud should be used to cover a large range constantly and this will never be necessary to use with that skill in our build.

Effigial Incense – This will allow us to summon and if pressed again, unsummon our illusion.  All aggression built while using incense will force targets to chase this illusion.  Can be effectively placed in small places around line of sight to draw in targets for an area of effect clearing from your party.

Invoking Essence – This will allow us to move our illusion once summoned.  This can be spammed quite frequently while moving around if the enemies are killing our illusion quickly.  Moving it can essentially dodge enemy attacks and reposition.  Additionally, it’s good to use this skill to face your enemies away from your party so they have minimal chance of being struck.

Effigial Snuff –  This is the skill action to unsummon our clone, attached to Effigial Incense slot.

Enthralling Aroma –  needs more info

Mending Vapor –  Slowly heals our illusion whlie drawing it towards us.  Useful for healing and consistent movement of our illusion.

Drifting Brume –  A ranged version of our melee to draw agro.  This will not be necessary to use with Sweeping Shroud for this build.

Effigial Quickburn –  A helpful passive to boost the speed at which you can recast your illusions.  This is helpful at the start and necessary resummons to get clear of your illusion and separate from it.

Trailing Aroma –  Provides additional range from which you can resummon your illusion.  It’s quite a generous range.

DD2 Trickster Build Vocation Class

Augments

Here we will discuss the Augments used on the Dragon’s Dogma 2 Trickster Build.  These are a bit different and some of these can be replaced.  Many will not directly benefit boosting damage as it’s not needed.  Nor do we need extended amounts of stamina or regeneration.  Therefore, added utility is good in place here.

  • Athleticism (Mystic Spearhand Vocation) – Reduces Stamina consumed while dashing.
  • Sustainment (Magick Archer Vocation) – Augments the physical Defense and Magick Defense of pawns in your party.
  • Constancy (Sorcerer Vocation) – Augments your Knockdown Resistance.
  • Apotropaism (Mage Vocation) – Augments your Magick Defense.
  • Mettle (Fighter Vocation) – Augments your physical Defense.
  • Dynamism (Fighter Vocation) – Reduces the amount by which weight affects your movement speed.

Party Setup for the DD2 Trickster Build

This Dragon’s Dogma 2 Trickster Build functions as a tank while providing buffed damage to the group.  Therefore a Mage will be recommended for general healing and celerity along with damage dealers.  Thus we would benefit from the following pawn members:

  • Mage Vocation – Included for group healing and boon buffs along with celerity.  Along with our buff, our choices will be extremely powerful.
  • Warrior Vocation – A Warrior can be doubled here for extreme knockdown power to pummel large targets.  For a more balanced approach, we can add a Sorcerer.
  • Sorcerer Vocation – Either providing our elemental area damage or we can double up with 2 Sorcerers that have matching skills along with our mage to create an elemental firestorm of power.  Use grouping with the members and try to match spells between both Sorcerers and even our Mage for synergized casting.

Equipment

This is a setup that you can work towards obtaining as you progress through the game – it is quite expensive especially if you plan to fully upgrade everything, but if you get everything then your character will be very powerful. This is not just a list of the “best items” in the game – there are some items that are stronger than those below but are unreasonably time-consuming to obtain for most players or are only available so late in your playthrough that you will barely get to use them.

Don’t worry if cannot obtain everything on the list right now – just equip the best you have for the time being and replace or upgrade later on when you can.

Item Slot Item Description Where to Find
Weapon Whimsical Daydream The strongest Censer available before the post-game, with good Strength and Magick ratings. Complete the Sphinx Riddle of Differentiation
Head Uncanny Eyes Offers a great defensive boost for the Trickster, with 72 Defence and 105 Magick Defence. Found in a chest guarded by bandits in a temple, north-east of Tomb of Ja’Nuwa. Or purchase from Volcanic Island Armoury for 37,500.
Body Ares Morpho Robe Decent defence and magic defence stats. Complete the quest “A Sorcerer’s Appraisal”. Or purchase from Volcanic Island Armoury for 42,800.
Legs Arena Breeches Good defence and decent magic defence, along with some Resistance to Blight, Sleep and Silence. Purchase from Volcanic Island Armoury for 33,100.
Cloak Any Cloaks have a fairly minor impact on stats, so use your best one or the one you find the most visually appealing N/A
Left Ring Ring of Quickening* Boost your Stamina Recovery Speed by 10% Purchase from Volcanic Island Armoury for 10,000
Right Ring Ring of Percipience Increase your Magick by 30. Purchase from Grisha’s Armoury for 5,000G, OR loot from a chest in Ancestral Chamber near Sacred Arbor, OR loot from Myrddin’s Home in Checkpoint Rest, OR loot from the skeleton-guarded cellar south of Checkpoint Rest.

*Your choice for jewellery is a matter of personal preference to a large extent. If you are struggling to survive, you could swap out one or both pieces for rings that increase your Maximum Health, for example.

Please note that the purchasable items in the table above may not become available until you progress through the game to a certain point – if you are low level then you will only see fairly weak items in vendors.

When collecting equipment for your build, you may struggle with your Carrying Capacity being too low, especially in the early game. Fortunately, this is something that can be increased in various ways. We have a guide that explains all of the ways to improve Carry Capacity.

Equipment Upgrades

We recommend upgrading your equipment with the Elven Smithing Style for an increase in the Magick stat of your gear, buffing your damage output with spells. Vermundian is also a valid option, which will give you a little less Magick but a more balanced stat distribution overall.

Trickster benefits from being tanky enough to endure any hits.  Generally they shouldn’t get hit themselves and can wear other utility items such as weight reduction.  Ensure you have a sufficient amount of health as well that you are not getting easily killed if you misstep.  Otherwise, primarily prioritize Carry Weight, Knockdown Resistance, and Maximum Stamina to perform your role optimally.
