Welcome to the Dragon’s Dogma 2 Sphinx Riddles Guide. This guide provides a detailed walkthrough of the quest, which, once completed, will earn you the Sphinx Riddles achievement. You will also get plenty of rare rewards progressing the quest that will help you with your DD2 playthrough.

The Sphinx Riddles Quest is a side quest that introduces you to the Sphinx legendary creature. The Sphinx will give you plenty of riddles to solve. Most of them are fairly tricky to figure out on your own! Each time you answer a riddle correctly, you will get rare rewards!

Table of Contents:

How to find the Sphinx

Before beginning the riddles, you must find the Sphinx in Dragon’s Dogma 2. Lucky you, she is stationary and can always be found at the same location. The Sphinx is located in the Mountain Shrine in Vermund.

Once you have found the Sphinx, she will present you with five riddles. You can select whatever riddle you like first.

You can also view the Mountain Shrine location on our DD2 map.

Mountain shrine Sphinx Riddles Quest Dragons Dogma 2

Getting to the Mountain Shrine can prove difficult. You can reach it in two ways: travel through the Misty Marshes from the east or through the Ancient Battleground in the south. We recommend using the Misty Marshes route. It is also more likely that you enter it through this route because it is closer to Vermund than the other location.

Misty Marshes Route 1

The Misty Marshes area is always shrouded in fog on the map. Once you are at the start of the Misty Marshes always move towards the west. Follow the torches! Eventually you will come by ruins of a small village. Behind the ruins you find rocky cliffs that you can climb. Now you are out of the shrouded area and close to the Mountain Shrine!

While traversing the Misty Marshes in Dragon’s Dogma 2, you will have to fight Ghosts, Skeletons, and Zombies. Daylight can’t penetrate the fog, which is why these creatures linger there. Once you are climbing upwards, be careful of any Harpies that might try to throw you down again by grabbing you or a group member. You will also find a campsite just outside of the Sphiny Mountain Shrine.

Ancient Battlegrounds Route 2

First, you need to visit the Checkpoint Rest town. Once there, head north. You will encounter a man named Oskar. He will ask you to escort him through the Ancient Battlegrounds, part of the Tolled to Rest quest. If you help him, he will show you the way through the Ancient Battlegrounds route. If you don’t go with Oskar, getting through will be a lot trickier.

When you are at the old battlements, search for a ladder leading to the top of the ruins. Behind the ruins, you will find a cave called Worldsend Cavern, which is part of the mountain. Once you manage to get through the cave you will be close to the Mountain Shrine.

How to Fast Travel to the Sphinx in Dragon’s Dogma 2

Players often don’t know one important mechanic in Dragon’s Dogma 2. You can fast-travel in the game! Place a Portcrystal near the Mountain Shrine where the Sphinx is located. The Portcrystal will always stay wherever you place it. Now you can use a Ferrystone to teleport where you placed the Portcrystal. You can also pick up the Portcrystal and place it again somewhere else.

What happens if you fail a Riddle

Failing a riddle won’t result in the complete failure of the Sphinx Riddles questline. You won’t be able to collect the reward for that said riddle. But you can continue to try to solve the other riddles!

You also won’t be able to get the Sphinx Riddle Trophy. To get the trophy you need to solve all the riddles!

Instantly Close Your Game

You can also cheese the riddles. If you fail a riddle, instantly close Dragon’s Dogma 2 (PC: ALT F4) before it gets a chance to autosave. Once the game autosaved you won’t be able to go back until your next playthrough. Another way is to instead of loading your last save game load

Last Rest at an Inn

Your second option is to load the last time you rested at an Inn instead of your normal autosave in case you closed the game too slowly.

Riddle of Eyes

Let’s take a look at the Riddle of Eyes. The Sphinx will ask you to retrieve the “item of greatest value” from a nearby cave. The Sphinx doesn’t tell you exactly what item you need to retrieve, sneaky! The cave is at the bottom of the stairs leading to the Mountain Shrine. Inside the cave, you will find plenty of enemies and treasure chests. Most treasure chests contain distractions. The actual treasure chest that you are looking for is at the entrance of the cave. It sits above the entrance. Climb up to reach the treasure chest and retrieve the Sealing Phial.

After you bring the Sealing Phial back to the Sphinx, you solve the riddle.

Important: You get to keep the Sealing Phial, don’t use it because it becomes useful later with another riddle!

By now you notice that you have to travel around a lot for the Sphinx Riddles questline. That is why we are telling you once again to place a Portcrystal infront of the Mountain Shrine to be able to teleport there instantly.

Riddle of Madness

For the Riddle of Madness, the Sphinx asks you to bring your “most beloved” to the shrine. You need to bring her a character with a high affinity towards you. It doesn’t have to be a romanced character; someone that you helped do a side quest is already enough.

If you aren’t sure, you can also wait with this riddle until you have reached max affinity with someone. You will know that when they talk with you, their cheeks blush red.

You can carry a character there or use the Sealing Phial to transport the character more easily. But keep in mind the Sealing Phial will break after one use.

Place your “most beloved” character to the platform in front of the Sphinx and put them down. Tell the Sphinx that this character is your answer to complete the Riddle of Madness.

Riddle of Wisdom

The Riddle of Wisdom is next! The Sphinx will ask you to find her “parent”. But who could that be? Pawns can be created with Sphinx-related monikers. So there is the SphinxFather and SphinxMother. You need to bring one of these to the Sphinx.

The fastest way to find a pawn like that is to visit the Riftstone of Fellowship, which is located near the main entrance to Harve Village. Every pawn there has the Sphinx in its name. Hire one of them and bring them to the Sphinx to solve this riddle.

Riddle of Conviction

The Riddle of Conviction is an easy riddle to solve. The Sphinx asks you to give her your “most prized possession“. Here you can actually give the Sphinx whatever you want, it doesn’t matter. She will also warn you that you won’t give it back, which is also deceptive. Hand over an item and she will congratulate you to have solved the riddle. The reward is a treasure chest that will contain the item that you gave to her.

Riddle of Rumination

Now comes the big one, the Riddle of Rumination. This is where most players scratch their heads because you likely won’t remember! The Sphinx asks you to bring her the first Seeker’s Token you collected in your Dragon’s Dogma 2 playthrough. Not only that, but this riddle has a 7-day time limit!

If you can’t remember, we recommend reading our Seeker’s Token Location Guide for Dragon’s Dogma 2 and check the early-game areas. It is more likely that you found your first Seeker’s Token somewhere during the beginner hours of your playthrough. You can also check our Dragon’s Dogma 2 Interactive Map to better see the Seeker’s Token locations.

How to find the Sphinx again at the Frontier Shrine

After answering the Sphinx’s first five riddles, she will depart from the Mountain Shrine and fly south. The next location where you can find her to continue the Sphinx Riddles is the Frontier Shrine.

Note: Don’t forget to retrieve your Portcrystal if you placed one at the Mountain Shrine.

The Frontier Shrine is far south on the map. It is a dangerous task to travel there. When you are at the Border Rest Checkpoint go through under the town’s bridge and follow the river south. Now you have to get through a cave full of saurians, cross a almost broken bridge and continue upwards.

Eventually, you reach a path that heads west. You know you are at the right spot when you see a broken pillar. Now follow this path to reach the Frontier Shrine, where you meet the Sphinx again!

Don’t forget to place your Portcrystal!

Riddle of Reunion

The Riddle of Reunion is completed immediately after speaking to her. She is happy to see you again, and that’s pretty much it. Don’t forget to collect the 100k Gold reward in the unlocked chest! That amount of gold will make your DD2 playthrough a lot easier!

New Riddles Prep!

The following riddles order are randomized. The riddles are the same, but you don’t get to choose which one you want to do first.

Important: The final riddle can only be completed if you can equip a bow and have the Unmaking Arrow with you! That means you must be an Archer or a Warfarer for this riddle to be completed. Otherwise, you won’t be able to collect the last treasure chest! The Archer is a base vocation. The Warfarer needs to be unlocked. Please read our guide on how to unlock the Warfarer vocation.

Riddle of Contest

The Riddle of Contest is next. The Sphinx orders you to defeat a guardsman that she summons. She asks you to equip a Ring of Derision for this. The ring lowers your damage to the lowest value (not zero).

Stagger and pick him up instead of hamming against him a million times. Now, throw him off the cliff to defeat the guardsman. Speak to the Sphinx again to complete this riddle in Dragon’s Dogma 2.

Riddle of Differentiation

For the Riddle of Differentiation, the Sphinx asks you to find one specific person and bring them to her. The Sphinx will show you an illusion of said person. And you might have already seen that person before. However, these are twin brothers who live on either side of the Border Rest Checkpoint.

One is called Dante, the other one is called Vergil, which is obviously a Devil May Cry reference.

The Hair is telling the difference!

  • Dante’s hair hangs over his left eye.
  • Virgil’s hair hangs over his right exe.

Which one you need to pick is randomized, so pay attention to the illusion! The best method is to screenshot the illusion when the Sphinx shows it to you.

Riddle of Recollection

The Riddle of Recollection is next. The Sphinx will ask you how many riddles you have answered up until now, you won’t have time to check your quest journal! It isn’t fairly hard to remember. At the Mountain’s Shrine there were five riddles (if you correctly answered them). Now just add the few that you have done here to the mix and you know the number!

Now, place the number of statues in front of the Sphinx and speak to her again to complete the riddle.

Important: You get the Unmaking Arrow as a reward; don’t use it until you reach the end of the Sphinx Riddles questline. It’s a one-shot arrow, and the game immediately saves your progress once you fire it.

Riddle of Futility

The Riddle of Futility. This riddle from the Sphinx tasks you with giving a priceless amphora vase to a character named Maurits. The item is very fragile! Maurits is located in Bakbattahl. Now, we are going to use the Reverse Uno card and bring Maurits to the amphora vase instead of the other way around! Once Maurits is close to the amphora, talk to him. After that, speak to the Sphinx to finish the riddle.

The Final Sphinx Riddle in Dragon’s Dogma 2

Important: To complete this riddle, you must be an Archer or Warfarer. You must also bring a bow to use the Unmaking Arrow!

Once you have completed the fourth riddle on the Frontier Shrine location, she will congratulate you and then say goodbye. Now act fast, because if you want to figure out what is in the last treasure chest, you must stop her from flying away.

Attack her as fast as possible after the conversation is over. This will start another conversation with the Sphinx, during which she will accept your combat challenge.

Unmaking Arrow Sphinx Riddles DD2

The Almighty Sphinx

The Sphinx is no normal enemy. She uses all magic elements, casts devastating spells, and is hard to hit. We recommend to be at least level 30 or more before you accept the final riddle in the Sphinx Riddle Quest in Dragon’s Dogma 2. Not only that, but you will need good gear and well-equipped pawns to help you. It’s an all-out fight!

After you drop her to low health her amulet will glow purple. That is your sign to shoot the Unmaking Arrow at her. If you wait too long she will fly off. You can’t defeat her by normal means. DON’T MISS! This is the opportunity of a lifetime ;). If she is still alive after taking a hit with the Unmaking Arrow, keep hitting at her and she will be defeated soon after.

Failsafe: if you failed, close the game before it autosaves or load the last time you rested at an Inn.

If you defeat her, she will tell you that she is impressed with your tenacity and that you solved the last riddle. After fading away, a huge key can be found on the ground with lots of gold.

Use the key to open the big treasure chest! You will be rewarded with the Eternal Wakestone. It is one-time use only, so it isn’t eternal at all. But you can use it to revive a ton of NPCs at once, for example, if a monster slays half a village!
