Basic Guide to Equipment in Throne & Liberty

Similarly to many other RPG and MMO games, equipment in Throne and Liberty is split into three main categories:

  • Armour – Protects you against damage. Light Armour improves agility but has lower defence, Heavy Armour improves defence at the cost of agility, while Medium Armour is a compromise between the two.
  • Weapons – Used to deal damage to enemies and sometimes to heal or buff allies. In Throne & Liberty, weapons effectively define your class, as the abilities and passives available to you depend on your currently equipped weapons. You can equip two weapons at a time, a front bar and a back bar weapon. Passives from both of your equipped weapons are always active, regardless of which weapon is currently drawn. Throne & Liberty has the following weapon types – click the links to learn more about each one:
  • Accessories – These further improve your character by buffing certain stats or granting you extra effects. You can equip necklaces, rings and earring sets.

The first step when deciding which equipment you will use is to choose your weapons, as these will define your character’s role, strengths and weaknesses, abilities and passives, effectively making up the foundation of your build. Your other equipment will then enhance and tweak your chosen build to your liking. However, to begin with, you will only have basic equipment. To create a mighty build in Throne and Liberty you need to level up your character, improve your skills and passives and upgrade your equipment. This is quite a lengthy process, but later in this guide, we will explain how to upgrade your equipment.

How to Get New Gear in Throne & Liberty

There are several ways to obtain new equipment items in Throne & Liberty:

  • Monsters and Bosses – Defeat these formidable foes and loot them, sometimes they drop equipment items.
  • Questing – Completing some quests will reward you with new equipment.
  • CraftingCrafting is an alternative way to obtain the gear that you need, removing the RNG aspect of loot.
  • Trading – Buy equipment from other players in the Auction House, or trade directly with players.

Rarity and Set Bonuses Explained

Equipment in Throne & Liberty conforms to the rarity spectrum typically found in RPG and MMO games. Equipment is divided into the following rarities, each one rarer and more powerful than the last:

  • Common
  • Uncommon
  • Rare
  • Epic
  • Legendary

Upgrading your equipment to Legendary is a slow process that makes up an important part of the end-game in Throne & Liberty. You can still get by just fine with lower rarities, but to unlock the maximum potential of your build you will eventually need to upgrade to Legendary.

Another essential aspect of gear is set bonuses. Some equipment items belong to a particular item set, and equipping multiple items from that item set at the same time will grant you additional bonuses. These bonuses not only make your character more powerful but can sometimes enable entirely new builds.

Upgrading Equipment in Throne & Liberty

Your equipment can be upgraded by visiting the Gear Enchanting menu. You can consume Growth Stones to add XP to your item, and every time you gain 100% XP on the item it will improve by one level, increasing the item’s stats. Each time you consume a growth stone, it can roll with the following chances:

  • Common Growth – 40% chance to gain 35% XP
  • Intermediate Growth – 30% chance to gain 40% XP
  • Greater Growth – 20% chance to gain 60% XP
  • Special Growth – 10% chance to gain 100% XP (immediately advances the item to the next level)

The Growth Stone you used needs to be of the same rarity as the item you are upgrading.

It is also possible to transfer upgrade progress from one item to another. For more information on how this works, check out our Gear Enchanting Guide.

Tips & Tricks for Quickly Upgrading Equipment

The process of upgrading your gear in Throne & Liberty can seem very long and time-consuming, but luckily there are a couple of things you can do to speed things up.

  • Complete Contracts and spend the Contract Coins in the Contract Coin Vendors – they sell a random selection of weapon, armour and accessory Growthstones, which will reset every 24 hours.
  • Visit Crafting Merchants to craft Growthstones, in exchange for a sum of gold and five Growthstones of the previous quality (for example, crafting a blue Growthstone requires 5 green ones). See our guide on Crafting Vendors to learn more about how they work.
    • Growthstones can also be crafted using Magic Powder and gems (such as Stalon), the exact items required depend on the type and tier of the Growthstone.
  • Complete Exploration Codices. Go to the Codex menu and then the Exploration tab. Here you can find many different Exploration missions. Completing each Codex offers you special rewards, which often include Growthstones.

Use the above methods to speed up your acquisition of Growthstones and max out your gear more quickly!

Which Gear Should I Choose for My Build?

When you are first getting started with Throne & Liberty, you may be unsure what equipment you should be using. While this is an open question and there is always room to make unconventional builds, there are well-defined roles in Throne & Liberty and certain weapons and armour types fit into those roles much more naturally than others. Therefore if you have an idea of what role you want your character to fill (i.e. DPS, tank, healer, etc) then you can choose your weapons fairly easily.

Below are the different roles in Throne & Liberty, along with the equipment types usually associated with them:

Tank

Tanks focus on taunting enemies (forcing them to attack you instead of your allies) to protect your allies from harm. It is therefore important that tanks have a highly defensive build, and the following equipment works perfectly for that aim:

  • Weapons: The Sword and Shield is a must-have weapon for this role. Your secondary weapon is more flexible, but common choices are Wand & Tome and Greatsword.
  • Armour: Heavy Armour is highly recommended, for improving your defensive attributes.
  • Accessories: Look out for any items that buff your HP, damage reduction and defence.

Healer

As the name suggests, the primary job of a healer is to heal their allies, preventing them from dying in combat. However, a good healer also provides extra buffs for their ally and debuffs enemies. Healers rely heavily on spellcasting and require a gear setup that allows them to store and regenerate large amounts of Mana:

  • Weapons: The Staff is the primary weapon of choice for healers, as it comes with a good selection of healing and support abilities. The Wand & Tome is the most obvious choice for your secondary weapon, but the Longbow is also an option as it comes with some AOE healing potential.
  • Armour: Healers use cloth armour since it provides a larger mana pool and improved healing effectiveness. This armour offers weak protection from enemy attacks though, so you’ll need to be extra careful of positioning in combat.
  • Accessories: Look out for items that improve your healing output, mana regeneration and ability cooldowns.

Damage Dealer

Damage Dealers, also called DPS, are the most commonly chosen role in Throne & Liberty, and their job is to push as much damage as possible while keeping themselves out of trouble (with the help of tanks and healers unless you’re playing solo). Damage Dealers have a wider range of gear options to choose from than Tanks and Healers, but some of the most common options are:

  • Weapons: Daggers and Crossbows offer an excellent package for dealing critical damage. You can also go for a greatsword if a melee brawler sounds more your style, or you can pair the Longbow with any of the other weapons mentioned here. You can also make a spellcaster DPS build by pairing Staff and Wand & Tome. These are just a few ideas, for more suggestions you might want to check out our Throne & Liberty Builds.
  • Armour: Medium Armour is a balanced pick for damage dealers in general, however you could also go with light armour especially if you are a spellcaster.
  • Accessories: Look out for items that improve your crit chance, crit power, attack power, hit chance or offer damage bonuses against specific enemy types.

PvP

This isn’t a role as such, it’s a completely different way of playing Throne & Liberty, where you are fighting other players rather than AI mobs. While you may have some limited success if you simply take your PvE build into PvP, to truly excel here you need a build tailored towards fighting other players. This typically means building stronger defensively while still retaining a decent damage output. Weapons that offer crowd control, debuffs and healing are all useful here too.

If you’re still not sure what type of build you want for your character or simply don’t know where to begin, we have many builds that may give you some ideas. Alternatively, you might want to look at some community builds created by other players. You can experiment and plan different options for your character with our Throne & Liberty Build Editor, too.
