Shortly after the reveal event for the 2022 chapter in The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) we also received a combat preview for Update 33 Ascending Tide DLC. The Ascending Tide DLC will already be on the Public Test Server on Monday January 31st and the DLC itself will go live on March 14th. This year’s chapter High Isle for ESO will be on the Public Test Server sometime in March and the chapter will go live on June 6th of 2022.

The main focus of the Update 33 Ascending Tide DLC will be to further extend the hybridization of combat to allow for more freedom of choice for player builds. Hybridization and streamlining of combat was a focus of the combat developer team for a while already.

The focus of Update 33 is to make skills scale dynamically with your highest offensive stats, like some skills and all the ultimates in ESO already do. This will allow for more flexibility to create builds, which is a key component for The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO).

ZOS: “In Update 33, the changes are focused on making almost every player ability in the game scale dynamically with your highest offensive stats when applicable”

Update 33 Combat Changes for ESO Elder Scrolls Online

Most of the item sets in ESO and passives have already been changed to allow for more hybridization. The developers mention that they want the player to feel empowered to pick any ability and weapon based on their playstyle. This basically means that an ability that only scaled off Spell Damage and Magicka will now also scale with Weapon Damage and Stamina.

However, one thing won’t change and that is the ability cost. Therefore a skill will either cost stamina, magicka or health. In addition to that, abilities will also still have a particular damage type such as fire, frost, physical, bleed etc. These are the only limiting factors that you have to keep in mind when theorizing your build.

In addition, Update 33 Ascending Tide DLC will also dual source buffs on abilities and item sets such as Major Prophecy with Major Savagery. Another example would be Major Brutality will now always have Major Sorcery when they appear on an ability or set.

Abilities that haven’t been used a lot by the Elder Scrolls Online community have also received updates. Many abilities have had their functionalities cleaned up to make sure that they get some extra excitement and use. Like with every update they have also fixed plenty of bugs on abilities. To give you an example, the ability Power Bash has a new functionality, it is now treated as a bash attack, or the Piercing Javelin ability which was almost never used can now pierce through players blocking. These are smaller changes but can have a huge impact on ability utilization.

To summarize, The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) continues their work on streamlining and hybridizing their beloved combat. The developers say this will ultimately allow for more flexibility and creativity in player builds creation for the players. You can already find all the new sets of Update 33 on the Update 33 Ascending Tide DLC overview page.
