Today we will take an in-depth look at the Dragapult ex Deck List Guide for the Pokémon Trading Card Game TCG. Dragapult ex is a new card and released with the Twilight Masquerade (TWM) content for the Pokémon TCG.
The Dragapult ex Deck unleashes chaos on the field by not only damaging the active Pokémon, but also the opponent’s bench! His Phantom Dive attack makes him interrupt his opponent’s strategy and is annoying to deal with due to the high HP.

TLDR Summary of the Dragapult ex Deck
TLDR: The Dragapult ex Deck’s strength comes from the Phantom Dive attack that deals 200 damage to the active Pokémon and, more importantly, also places 6 damage counters on your opponent’s Benched Pokémon in any way you like. And best of all this attack isn’t blocked by Manaphy or Jirachi, more on why this is the case here. This attack makes it extremely difficult for the enemy because you can easily defeat basic Pokémon on the opponent’s bench, most of them have 30-70 health and not more. The attack only costs one Psychic and one Fire Energy.
Additionally, Dragapult ex also doesn’t have any weaknesses because it is a Dragon-type Pokémon and has a good 320 health. We accelerate Energy via Xatu, who also increases our draw power. We also make use of Rotom V to draw cards at the start of the game, that way we are less likely to get stuck at the beginning.
While we have two Rare Candy in our Dragapult ex deck, we still run four Drakloak which is the evoltuion before Dragapult ex. The main reason being because of its useful ability Surveillance, which allows us to look at the top two cards of our deck and put 1 of them into our hand. The other card goes at the bottom of the deck. So you see we have plenty of ways to get enough cards in our hand. That way we also avoid getting rekt by the Technical Machine: Devolution, which is part of many decks these days.

Manaphy and Jirachi counter Dragapult ex?
No. Manaphy or Jirachi don’t counter Dragapult ex. That is what makes the Dragapult ex card so powerful. First off, it is important to note that Dealing Damage and Placing Damage Counters are two different mechanics. Manaphy only blocks normal damage and Jirachi does block damage counters, but it only works against Basic Pokémon!
However, Rabsca does work as a counter to Dragapult ex. But you need to evolve it. Rabsca has the Spherical Shield ability: “Prevent all damage from and effects of attacks from your opponent’s Pokémon done to your Benched Pokémon.”
The problem with Rabsca is you need to evolve it from Rellor and it is easy to take out and takes time to prepare again.
How to play the Dragapult ex Deck TCG
I will explain most of the important cards of our Dragapult ex Deck Build for the Pokémon card game here. It is recommended going first with our deck to attack our opponent as soon as possible since we only need two energies to start attacking our opponent’s Pokémon. However, you can also go second to use our Supporter trainer cards sooner. Basically, if you notice you don’t often manage to set up an attack on your second turn then I recommend going second at the start.
Dragapult ex
Dragapult ex is the main attacker of our Dragapult ex Deck Build for the Pokémon TCG. It has a high health pool of 320, this is hard to take out within one hit. Dragapult ex’s main strength comes from the Phantom Dive attack. It deals 200 damage and also allows you to place 6 damage counters on your opponent’s Benched Pokémon in any way you like. This is extremely frustrating for the opponent because you can defeat his basic Pokémon fairly easy and disrupt his evolving strategy heavily. We also explained in the section above why this attack isn’t blocked by Manaphy and Jirachi here.
Most meta decks have low-health Basic Pokémon in their deck. That means you will easily get free prize cards by defeating the opponent’s Benched Basic Pokémon. It is important to place the damage counter correctly with your deck. For example, Charmander has 70 health. Now it is important to place one damage counter on Charmander and place the rest somewhere else. Because on your next attack you can then place all six damage counters on the Charmander and defeat it because it already had lost 10 health. Additionally, you can make use of Radiant Alakazam. If the opponent just placed a Charmander you can move one or two damage counters from another Pokémon to the Charmander and then defeat it right away with the Phantom Dive attack. This tactic doesn’t allow the opponent to evolve any of his Pokémon.
Radiant Alakazam
Radiant Alakazam plays a crucial role in the Dragapult ex Deck for the Pokémon TCG. We want to make use of the Painful Spoons ability that allows us to move up to 2 damage counters from one of your opponent’s Pokémon to another of their Pokémon once per turn. At first, this doesn’t sound very useful, but most basic Pokémon have around 30-70 health. Dragapult ex deals an extra 6 damage counters on any benched Pokémon of your opponent. Therefore, moving one or two damage counters is a big benefit.
Let’s say the opponent places a basic Pokémon with 70 health. Now it’s your turn, and if you simply attack with Dragapult ex, you won’t be able to defeat it with the byproduct of the 6 damage counters. However, suppose there is already damage on another Pokémon on the opponent’s side. In that case, you can then place one damage counter on that new basic Pokémon and defeat it with the additional 6 damage counters when you attack. This way, the opponent doesn’t have a chance to evolve it!
Xatu and Rotom V
Xatu and Rotom V increase our draw power. Xatu not only increases our draw power, but also allows us to attach an extra Psychic Energy card to our Pokémon. Keep in mind there are only four Psychic Energy in our deck. That means they are hard to draw, but we use Earthen Vessel to get the right energy cards we need! Xatu is a stage 1 Pokémon that evolves from Natu. We can find Xatu by either using an Ultra Ball or use the Technical Mache: Evolution trick. More on that here. Xatu allows us to get a Dragapult ex ready in one turn to attack. Attach the Psychic Energy via Xatu’s Clairvoyant Sense ability and attach the Fire Energy from your hand; your Dragapult ex is ready to attack!
Rotom V is another excellent Pokémon that you can get by using a Nest Ball PAF 084. Rotom V allows you to end your turn and draw three extra cards with its Instant Charge ability. This is especially important at the beginning of the game to increase our chances of drawing the right cards. Additionally, you can also attach the Forest Seal Stone to it. This allows you to get any card that you want for your current strategy.
A quick example: Let’s say you only have Arven in your hand. Now you can use him to get a Nest Ball and the Forest Seal Stone. Get Rotom V with the Nest Ball, place it on the bench and attach the Forest Seal Stone to get another card you need to advance your play. Once you finish everything, use Rotom’s ability Instant Charge to end your turn and draw three extra cards.
Drakloak
You might have noticed that we have four Drakloak in our deck, which is the previous evolution of Dragapult ex. However, we also two Rare Candy to go directly from the basic Pokémon to the final evolution. Having Drakloak in our deck makes it hard for the opponent to annoy us with the Technical Machine: Devolution. Additionally, Drakloak has a very useful ability called Surveillance. This allows us to look at the top 2 cards of our deck, and put one of them into our hand, the other card goes to the bottom of the deck. That way we have once again extra draw power.
Buddy-Buddy Poffin, Nest Ball, Ultra Ball
We have plenty of ways to get the correct Pokémon onto our bench or into our hand. Buddy-Buddy Poffin allows us to get any Pokémon with 70 HP or less. You want to get Dreepy and Natu with it. The Nest Ball PAF 084 is here to get Rotom and Radiant Alakazam onto our bench. The Ultra Ball is used to get either Xatu PAF 026 or Dragapult ex.
Arven
Arven is our most important Supporter in our Dragapult ex Deck Build for the Pokémon card game. Arven allows you to get any important Item card and Pokémon Tool card. Especially important in the early stages of the game to set up your bench. Like mentioned above you could get a Nest Ball and the Forest Seal Stone with it. Then get the Rotom V with the Nest Ball and attach the Forest Seal Stone to it to draw another card. Now at the end of your turn you can use Rotom V’s ability to draw three cards!
You can also get any of the Technical Machines in the deck, or an Earthen Vessel for the mid game to get energies out of the deck.
Technical Machine: Evolution
The Technical Machine: Evolution is an important early game card for your Dragapult ex Deck. Let’s say you have a Dreepy in your active spot. Give it an energy and the Technical Machine: Evolution. Now you can use the Evolution attack to evolve one (or two) of your Natu’s and one Dreepy. Now you already have a headstart and can evolve directly into Dragapult ex in your next turn. This also ensures you have the Xatu PAF 026 ready for your next turn. With this tactic, you don’t have to search the Pokémon out of your deck and it sets you up for the prime position.
Earthen Vessel
Earthen Vessel is our main way to ensure that we can get enough Energy cards to our hand. With it, we can get a Psychic and a Fire Energy. That way, we can attach a Psychic Energy via Xatu‘s ability to our Dragapult ex and attach a Fire Energy from our hand to our main attacker Pokémon. This ensures that we are ready to attack within one turn if we really need to and it also allows us to draw extra cards!
Iono, Unfair Stamp, Enhanced Hammer
Iono, Unfair Stamp and Enhanced Hammer are here to interfere with the opponent’s deck strategy. The Unfair Stamp is especially impactful at the start of the game. You can literally bring the opponent’s deck to a halt with it because you get to draw six cards while the opponent only gets to draw two cards. And that means he will most likely be stuck because the bench is not ready yet. However, you can only use the Unfair Stamp after one of your Pokémon was defeated. Iono is always a good option just to mess with your opponent’s hand. Enhanced Hammer can get rid of cards like a Mist Energy, Gift Energy or the new Legacy Energy ace card (Take 1 prize card instead of 2).
Collapsed Stadium
The Collapsed Stadium allows you to shrink the size of each players bench. This can both be used against the opponent’s bench or for our bench. Rotom V LOR 058 is a potential vulnerability for our deck in the late game as it can easily be defeated due to low health. However, if you place the Collapsed Stadium on the field you can remove Rotom V. Of course, you need to ensure that you have five Pokémon on your bench to make use of the effect.
There are a few other cards in the Dragapult ex deck, but they are sort of self-explanatory. I explained all the important cards above.
Dragapult ex Deck Variations
Like with any Pokémon deck it is important to understand that you can adjust the Dragapult ex Deck to your needs. Here are a few other great cards you could utilize in this Pokémon deck.
Prime Catcher
Instead of the Unfair Stamp you could also use the Prime Catcher instead. It lets you pull any of the opponent’s benched Pokémon into the active spot. For example, you could defeat two basic Pokémon he needs to evolve in one turn. Leaving him no option to advance his deck strategy.
Tatsugiri
Tatsugiri is another great utility Pokémon. It has the Attracting Customers ability that allows you to look at the top 6 cards of your deck and put a Supporter card into your hand. It needs to be in the active spot, though. Great in the early game or when you get stuck mid or late game.
Fire ahoi! Radiant Charizard, Charmander and Charizard ex
Because we do have Fire Energy in the deck it can also make sense to swap out Radiant Alakazam for Radiant Charizard. That way you have a strong basic attacker in the late game that just needs one Fire Energy to attack.
And, of course, the good old Charmander and Charizard ex combo. Another great way to heavily increase your attack power in the late game because of Charizard ex’s Burning Darkness attack that deals 180 + 30 extra damage for each opponent’s prize card taken. And not only that, evolving it also allows you to use the Infernal Reign ability to get up to three basic Fire Energy out of your deck.
If you do decide to add these fire type Pokémon I do recommend to get the Fire Energy count up to five minimum and add one extra Rare Candy.
