In Soulframe, players must locate several Ancestor Characters to populate their Nightfold base and unlock all of the functionality available in the game.
Verminia the Rat Witch is one such Ancestor. Once recruited, she allows you to dye your character’s equipment, customising your in-game appearance. Players often refer to her as “Rat Lady“, so if you’ve seen that moniker in the in-game chat, they’re talking about Verminia.
However, a lot of players have trouble locating her, and much of the information about this online is based on an old version of the Soulframe map, which causes them to look in the wrong area. In this guide, we will explain where and how to unlock Verminia the Rat Witch in Soulframe.
This guide is up to date with the latest version of Soulframe (Preludes 11).

Where to Find Verminia in Soulframe
Before you can complete Verminia’s quest, you need to find her. Below is a step-by-step guide on finding Verminia in Soulframe.
Step 1: Starting the Brewer of Hues Quest
The first step to recruit Verminia is to find the dungeon where she is hidden. In the central part of the map, just south of Fort Curlail, you will find a large tree with hollowed-out roots. Beneath the tree is a cave.
When you enter the cave, you’ll receive a quest called “Brewer of Hues“. This is how you know you’re in the correct place. Proceed into the cave and you’ll get the objective “Rats! Follow their squeaks through the Andurin Glades“. Go through the big doors at the end of the cave, and you’ll enter an open area. There are a few enemies here, including some assassins. I recommend taking a few moments to fully explore the area, since there are a few chests to find, some of which can contain fragments for crafting.
Step 2: Finding the Rat
When you’re done exploring, it’s time to continue with the quest. While the objective tells you to follow the squeaks, it’s much easier to use your Sparrow to guide you to the correct location. Keep following it, being sure to loot any chests along the way.
You will be led through a tunnel, and eventually to another big door at the top of some stairs. Go through the door, and through another small cave area, then through another big door. By now, the objective will have changed to “Unearth ruins of old“.
If you’re going the right way, you’ll start hearing a deep, disembodied voice talking about a storm rider. You’ll emerge from the cave into a dark area with frequent rain, thunder and lightning. Keep following your sparrow guide, looking out for more loot.
Your objective will again change to “Free this land from Sinecure“. Summon your sparrow guide again, and it’ll lead you to a ruin surrounded by corrupted plants, with four Sinecure enemies surrounding it. Defeat them, then go inside the ruin, and you’ll find a cage with a rat inside. Free the rat to proceed to the next part of the quest.
Step 3: Fighting Nimrod
Your objective will now change to “Pursue the Poppet“.
The rat will lead you on a winding path, leading to another ruin. At this ruin, you are ambushed by a boss called Nimrod. He attacks with his trident and also has a couple of AoE attacks. Sometimes he will jump into the sky, and a blue ring appears around your character, gradually getting smaller. When the ring is at its smallest, run/dodge away, because Nimrod is about to land on you.
While Nimrod’s attacks do hit quite hard, they are all very slow and predictable, so he isn’t challenging. When he’s lost around half of his health, he retreats into the sky. You can then follow the rat to a second ruin, where Nimrod attacks you again. The fight is the same, and has the same result of Nimrod retreating into the clouds.
Possible Bug: Sometimes, Nimrod isn’t very keen to spawn at the ruins like he is supposed to. There doesn’t seem to be an elegant way to fix this; you just have to run around between the ruins until he shows up. You can also try restarting the game to reset things.
Step 4: Finding Verminia
Follow the rat some more, and it leads you to a stone wall with a broken statue idol next to it. You can interact with the statue and play a tune on your flute to repair it. This will open a new passage. Head inside and you’ll find a cave opening with a couple of small waterfalls. Approach the rat to begin a cutscene where Verminia introduces herself.
Important: The previously mentioned bug with Nimrod’s spawning can impact the quest at this point. You must have fought off Nimrod twice, otherwise you will not be able to interact with the statue. If you reach this point and haven’t fought Nimrod twice, you can still fix it by going back and looking around the stormy area until he spawns. The game is still in an alpha stage of development, so bugs like this can arise.
After the dialogue cutscene, interact with Verminia to recruit her. She will then disappear, speak to you from afar and give you a new item called Cloudquell. This item is required to defeat Nimrod for good, allowing you to finish the quest.
Finishing the Brewer of Hues Quest
Now that we’ve found Verminia, we just need to finish the Brewer of Hues quest. Luckily, we have already completed most of it – all that’s needed is to finish fighting Nimrod.
Step 5: Defeat Nimrod
Hold down C to view your elixirs access wheel, then select your new Cloudquell item. Don’t use it yet, just equip it for now.
Retrace your steps, heading back to the thundery area where you fought Nimrod. He will soon ambush you yet again. Once you are in combat with Nimrod, use your Cloudquell item. This will purge the stormy weather from the area, preventing Nimrod from escaping. He can still use all of his thunder and lightning attacks, though.
Fight Nimrod as you did previously, and this time you’ll be able to finish him off for good.
Once Nimrod is dead, the Brewer of Hues Quest will be completed.
What Does Verminia Do in Soulframe?
Once you’ve completed the Brewer of Hues Quest, you can head to your Nightfold (press TAB) and approach the orb of light. A new building will appear, along with Verminia.
From now on, you can talk to Verminia in your Nightfold to customise your armour’s appearance with dyes or transmogrify your armour. You can find out more about how these systems work in our Soulframe Hues & Bestitch Guide.
