Welcome to the Staff Beginner Build Guide for Throne & Liberty.

In this guide, we will explain how to create a simple but powerful Staff build that is perfect for new or casual players. Our beginner builds are easier to create and play than our endgame builds (such as the Staff & Dagger Build) because they have fewer essential skills and passives, and equipment that is generally easier to obtain.

It will take you considerably less time to set up and learn to play this build than builds intended for endgame, so this is the ideal starting point if you’re quite new to the game, or if you only intend to play the game casually and don’t want to put much time or effort into hard PvE dungeons or PvP combat.

Staff Beginner Build Setup for Throne and Liberty

In this section, we will explain the important components of the build, such as stats, passives, skills and equipment for our Staff Beginner Build in Throne and Liberty.

Weapons Main vs Off-hand

  • Main-hand: Staff
  • Off-hand: Daggers

Our main weapon slot is the Staff and our off-hand weapon slot is the Daggers. These two synergize extremely well and complement each other. Passives from your secondary weapon are still active when you are holding your primary weapon, and vice versa. This makes it possible to apply the Dagger’s passives when you are using the Staff for example. This will give you lots of extra Critical Chance and Critical Damage on your spells.

If you’re just starting out then you can equip whichever Staff and Daggers you find, and keep replacing them with better ones that you find when levelling up. You don’t need specific weapons for this build to work, but we will include a more precise equipment section later in the guide for players who already reached maximum level and want to put a bit more time into optimising their gear.

Stats

The following stats are important for the Staff & Daggers build:

  • Wisdom – Increases your Max Mana and Mana Regen. When levelling up your build, increase this until you feel like you do not have Mana problems (i.e. running out too often) anymore. Then move on to the next stat.
  • Perception – Increases your chance to hit enemies with your attacks. We recommend increasing this to 19, then moving on to the next stat.
  • Dexterity – Once you have increased your Wisdom and Perception to a satisfactory level, it is time to increase your Dexterity, which will be the focus for all remaining stat points. Dexterity increases your Critical Hit chance, which is greatly important for a crit-focused build like this one.

By endgame, you should aim to have a stat distribution that looks similar to the following:

  • 10 Strength
  • 30 Dexterity
  • 30 Wisdom
  • 19 Perception

If you think you don’t have enough health on your build, you can place some points in Strength to increase your Health value. This also prevents you from getting one shot by bosses in tougher dungeons in Throne and Liberty.

Defence Skill

Each build in Throne and Liberty can slot one defense skill. Because we are using a Staff and Daggers we have a choice between two defensive skills:

For our Staff Beginner Build we are going with Mystic Shield, which restores some of your Mana when you defend against Fury Attacks (attacks with the purple indicator on an enemy) and also spawns a small damage AOE for extra DPS.

Active Skills

Below are explanations of the skills we are using for the Staff Beginner Build.

Serial Fire Bombs Staff Skill TL  Inferno Wave Staff Skill TL  Smokescreening Frost Staff Skill TL  Chain Lightning Staff Skill TL  Icebound Tomb Staff Skill TL  Inner Peace Staff Skill TL  Inject Venom Dagger Skill TL

Staff Skills

  • Serial Fire Bombs – A Fire skill that deals damage and has a high chance to inflict 2 stacks of Weaken: Burning (3 stacks for Critical Hits). Burning lasts for 12s and deals damage each second. Stacks up to 10 times. It can be used up to 3 times in a row. The casting time decreases and Mana cost increases as the skill is used consecutively. All Fire skills‘ Weaken: Burning damage is equal to Serial Flame Bombs’.
  • Inferno Wave – A Fire skill that deals damage within 3m of the Target. Each stack will decrease all skills’ Cooldown, and deal bonus damage to all enemies within 3m, with a high chance to inflict Weaken: Burning, if used on the target you’ve already inflicted Burning.
  • Frost Smokescreen – Creates a 4m radius that lasts for 5s where you are standing and teleport backwards for 8m. Decreases enemies’ Move Speed within the area. Can be used up to 2 times.
  • Chain Lightning – A Lightning skill that deals heavy damage. Deals additional damage against a target who is Burning – more Burning stacks yields more bonus damage. Damage transfers to other enemies within a 5m radius from the target up to 3 times if the target is wet. Damage decreases every time it transfers, and it will not transfer to a target already affected. Cooldown decreases if you’re Wet.
  • Icebound Tomb – Deals damage with a high chance to inflict Petrification: Freeze on the target. Has a high chance to inflict Weaken, decreasing Move Speed for enemies within 3m of the target.
  • Inner Peace – Greatly increases Mana Regen for 9s. The skill becomes disabled if you move. The increase is doubled if you’re wet; Mana Cost Efficiency greatly increases for 9s after the skill is over if you’re not wet.

Dagger Skills

  • Inject Venom – Adds Weaken: Poison effect to all attacks for 9s. The poison lasts 6s and deals damage each second while stopping Health Regen. Stacks up to 20 times.

Passive Skills

Below are explanations of the passives, including how they can synergize with other passives and skills.

Manaball Eruption passive Staff Skill TL  Asceticism passive Staff Skill TL  Flame Condensation passive Staff Skill TL  Mana Amp passive Staff Skill TL  Assassin's Instincts Passive Dagger Skill TL  Profuse Poison Passive Dagger Skill TL  Vicious Fangs Passive Dagger Skill TL  Wrathful Edge Passive Dagger Skill TL

Staff Passives

  • Manaball Eruption – Small chance to trigger an additional projectile that deals damage and inflicts Weaken: Burning (chance increased based on Mana Regen), when using Staff or Wand to do a Basic Attack.
  • Asceticism – Mana Regen increases. If you are motionless for 2s, Mana Regen increases by a larger amount.
  • Flame Condensation – Increases Burning damage and Duration.
  • Mana Amp – Increases Max Mana and Max Health.

Dagger Passives

  • Assassin’s Instincts – Increases Melee, Ranged, and Magic Critical Hit.
  • Profuse Poison – Increases Poison Duration and Poison Damage during the day. Increases Poison Damage by a greater amount at night.
  • Vicious Fangs – Attacking targets afflicted by your Poison, increases Melee, Ranged, Magic Critical Hit.
  • Wrathful Edge – Significantly increases Critical Damage.

Skills and Passives Upgrade Priority

Upgrading Skills and Passives in the right order will make combat a lot easier in Throne and Liberty. However, it also takes quite a long because you need so-called “Growth Stones” to upgrade and the higher quality ones are difficult to get. Therefore it is important to plan ahead which skills you want to upgrade first.

Note: You unlock higher level skills already in a higher quality such as Rare or Epic. So you won’t have to upgrade all of the Skills.

Equipment for the Staff Beginner Build

When you are leveling up this build don’t worry too much about gear. The gear itself only becomes important after level 50. Therefore make sure to simply equip whatever you find and focus on leveling up your skills. Make sure to read our Throne and Liberty Equipment Guide to understand the basics of how gear works. Additionally, we also recommend reading the Throne and Liberty Gear Enchanting Guide to get an understanding of how you can improve your gear and why it is important.

Please note that since this is a beginner build, the gear mentioned below is just a guide – you can get by just fine if you decide to use a different gear setup than what is mentioned here. You can click on the items in the tables below to find out more about them.

How To Obtain the Gear

The easiest way to get the beginner gear is to do as many daily quests as possible. That way you can farm “Contract Coins”. You can pick up daily quests in Kastleton at the Contract Manager Noss at the townsquare. The Daily quests often reward you with things like:

  • Quality Lithograph: Weapons
  • Quality Lithograph: Accessories
  • Quality Lithograph: Armor

With these Lithographs you can then craft your starter gear! Sometimes the Contract Manager might not have the Lithographs, you can try to refresh the page and new ones will pop up.

Contract Coin Merchant: Next to Noss you can also find the Contract Coin Merchant Kail who will sell you these Lithographs directly (scroll down to the bottom of his list) for 100 Contract Coin each. However, we recommend just doing the dailies to get the Quality Lithographs because the coins are better spent on other items.

Contract Manager Get Crafting Recipes for Gear TL

Now you can simply move up the stairs and you will find the Weapon Crafter Ragere, Armor Crafter Rachel and Accessories Crafter Marianne. With the green Quality Lithographs you can craft any of the green items they offer. Of course, you will need some crafting materials, but you often get those by simply doing the dailies. Otherwise simply click on the crafting materials icon and click on “how to acquire” and it will show you where to find them.

How to Play the Staff Beginner Build in TL

Now that we have explained how to create the Staff Beginner build, we will cover the best ways to play the build to get the best out of it, including combos and general tips.

Staff Beginner Build Combos & Rotation

While you can play the Staff Beginner build on a casual level by just using random skills or spamming the same skill over and over again, the more skilled player will make the most of their skills and passives, many of which can be used in a certain order to buff the final damage output of each skill – these are known as combos.

Below are the most important combos for this build, along with a summary of how/why they work.

  • Inject Venom -> Serial Fire Bombs -> Inferno Wave -> Chain Lightning
    • Poisoning the target with Inject Venom gives you bonuses when attacking them thanks to your Dagger passives, such as increased Critical Hit chance. Serial Fire Bombs and Inferno Wave inflict stacks of Burning onto the target, and each stack of Burning converts into a 9% damage bonus on your Chain Lightning.

Archer Tips & Tricks

  • Don’t focus too much on gear early on. Gear farming only becomes important after you hit max level.
  • Get equipment that gives you extra Max Health or stat buffs at the beginning.
  • Always keep track of your cooldowns, especially on the high cooldown Skills.
