Emma Laurent Skill Overview – SL Arise Overdrive

Here is a quick explanation of Emma Laurent’s skills in Solo Leveling: ARISE OVERDRIVE, and how to use them.

Basic Skills

Sword of Revenge

The rapier is enveloped in free-flowing flames, piercing and slashing like a dance, before striking down the enemy in blazing fire. The user inflicts a powerful Stagger.

This is your basic attack, activate with left-click. It can be chained up to four times, with each strike in the chain taking a different form. The fourth strike is particularly notable, being a spinning attack that will hit the target several times and knock them over.

Flare Strike

Heavy Attack. A fire-covered sword pierces the enemy, releasing a fiery explosion upon retrieval. The user inflicts a powerful Stagger.

Press C to activate Flare Strike. You will lunge forward and deal fire damage to the target, knocking them back.

Burn Up

The user charges forward, drawing in flames like a dance partner, and leaving a trail of blazing fire in their wake. They inflict Burn on hit enemies to periodically damage them, and lingering in the flames triggers the Scorch effect. The user inflicts a powerful Stagger.

A large fire AoE that burns enemies over time. Especially useful against hordes of enemies, but also worth using against a boss. Press Q to activate the Burn Up skill in Arise Overdrive.

Flame Cleave

The user delivers two stabs with gradually intensifying flames, then finishes with a fast, powerful fiery stab, dealing increased damage proportional to the number of Burn stacks applied. The user inflicts a powerful Stagger.

Unleash several rapid stabs, causing the enemy to burn over time. The final strike knocks the target back.

Special Skills

Roaring Flames

The user stabs continuously and powerfully with a fire-infused rapier. Inflicts Burn to enemies standing on the flames temporarily and increases allies’ Attack, stacking up to 5 times.

This is Emma Laurent’s Support Skill. It is only available when she is supporting Sung Jinwoo. It can be used when Sung Jinwoo’s Overdrive is active or when an Elemental Status Effect is active on nearby enemies.

Flame Judgment

QTE Skill. A coat of blazing fire envelops the sword as the user jabs forward at blinding speed, applying Burn on hit targets. This skill grants a Heavy Attack Damage Increase effect to the entire team for a long period of time. Inflicts a powerful Stagger.

Flame Judgment is activated automatically when you use Left Shift to switch to Emma Laurent when prompted. Make sure you are in a suitable position to hit an enemy with the attack before making the switch.

Wildfire Slash

Synchro Chain. Emma swings a blazing sword to attack enemies in front of her.

Press T to activate your Hunter team’s Synchro Chain when prompted. All Hunters in the party will activate their Synchro Chain attack simultaneously, dealing an extra burst of damage.

Burning Pride

Ultimate Skill. The blazing fire takes the form of a clone, scorching in front, while the sword releases its intense heat. Damage increases in proportion to the number of Burn stacks the hit target has. Inflicts a powerful Stagger.

This is Emma Laurent’s ultimate skill. Activate it by pressing R when your ultimate is fully charged. Burning Pride deals fire damage in a large AoE. I’ve found it to be very good against both multiple and single targets. Try to use your other skills to apply Burn stacks to enemies before you activate Burning Pride, as this will boost the ultimate’s damage.

Unique Skills

Dash Combo Attack

When tapping the Basic Attack Button after performing Dash, the user can use Dash Combo Attack.

Back Dash Combo Attack

When tapping the Basic Attack Button after performing Back Dash, the user can use Back Dash Combo Attack.

Deflect Combo Attack

When tapping the Basic Attack Button after performing Deflect, the user can use Deflect Combo Attack.

How to Play Emma Laurent

Emma Laurent is a hybrid spellcaster, meaning she can fight in melee effectively and also use ranged spells (the spells don’t have a long range, though).

Despite the limited range, this makes Emma more versatile, and her fire magic gives her ample AoE damage to deal with trash enemies so she can focus on the main target.

The key to getting good damage with Emma Laurent is to stack up Burning as much as possible. In particular, you should make use of Burn Up and Flame Cleave to apply stacks of Burning to enemies. Over time, your Burning Damage becomes quite severe and can burn through boss HP bars surprisingly fast.

You can press V to activate Emma Laurent’s Overdrive. This will enhance her next Sword of Revenge or Flare Strike skill. You can store up to three Overdrive slots, and each use of Overdrive consumes one slot.

Hitting an enemy with your Heavy Attack (Flare Strike) grants you a stack of Heat that boosts your Attack and Critical Hit Rate. Each time you gain a stack of Heat, you also restore one Overdrive slot. This make’s Emma’s Overdrive really easy to use –  keep using your Heavy Attack every few seconds and you’ll have plenty of Overdrive charges.

Emma Laurent Skill Upgrade Priorities – SL Arise Overdrive

As mentioned above, Hunter skills in Solo Leveling: ARISE OVERDRIVE are split up into Basic Skills, Special Skills and Unique Skills. Of these, only Basic and Special Skills can be upgraded. The upgrades are done in groups – for example, you upgrade all Basic Skills at once, rather than upgrading the skills individually.

It is generally more important to upgrade the Basic Skills rather than the Special Skills, because the Basic Skills are used much more often (this group includes your Basic Attack, Heavy Attack and the skills activated by pressing Q or E). So if you have to make a choice between the two, always go for Basic Skills.

In practice, however, it is usually easier to upgrade them in a balanced manner, upgrading both groups to rank 2, then upgrading them both to rank 3, and so forth. This is because each tier is significantly more expensive than the last, so rushing a full set of Basic Skill upgrades usually isn’t possible unless you’ve played through the whole game without doing any upgrades.

Weapon Description

Sword (D)

To get the D-Tier Steel Sword, start with the basic E-Tier Sword and upgrade it twice to reach D-Tier.

This weapon provides no special effects, but gives a boost to Laurent’s Attack stat.

Night-Thoughts (C)

After crafting the D-Tier Sword, craft the Steel Longsword, then upgrade it to C-Tier. You can now craft Night-Thoughts at C-Tier.

This gives a boost to Laurent’s HP and Attack stats. Hitting an enemy with Overdrive will decrease their Attack by an additional amount.

Hitting an enemy with Flame Cleave is guaranteed to restore 1 Overdrive slot.

Night-Thoughts (S)

Upgrade Night-Thoughts three times more and you will reach the S-Tier. This version gives a larger boost to Laurent’s HP and Attack.

It also further improves the bonuses from the previous tiers.

This is by far the best weapon available for Emma Laurent in Solo Leveling: ARISE OVERDRIVE.

Emma Laurent Best Armour & Artefact Sets

Early Game Best Sets

In the early game, there aren’t many strong sets, so we just take whatever items we can get that will boost damage output. The Apprentice Mage set gives us a modest boost to Attack and Critical Damage, which makes for a decent DPS boost. The Red-Eyed set synergises very slightly with Laurent’s fire magic.

  • Armor Set: Apprentice Mage
    • [2 Items] Slightly Increases Attack
    • [4 Items] Increases Critical Hit Damage
  • Jewelry Set: Red-Eyed
    • [2 Items] Very slightly increases Fire Damage
    • [4 Items] When you deal Fire damage, there is a very small chance to apply the Scorch effect.

Mid Game Best Sets

High-Ranking Demon is a well-rounded set that boosts your attack and defense. This should help you out with the rather tricky bosses you’ll encounter around this time. Viridescent gives more damage boosts and slightly reduces your skill cooldowns.

  • Armour Set: High-Ranking Demon
    • [2 Items] Increases Attack and Defense
    • [4 Items] Using a Basic Skill triggers a moderate chance to grant Super Armor, and will increase the user’s Basic Skill damage for a certain amount of time.
  • Jewelry Set: Viridescent
    • [2 Items] Very slightly reduces the user’s Basic Skill cooldown, but slightly increases their MP Consumption.
    • [4 Items] Using the Basic Skill very slightly increases the user’s Basic Skill Damage Increase effect for a certain amount of time, stacking up to 10 times.

Late Game Best Sets

We’re using the Dark Knight set because it only requires three items to get the full set benefit, and it boosts all of your Basic and Heavy attacks. The three-piece set bonus allows us to equip Burning Curse Gloves, boosting your damage dealt but also increasing damage taken. The Beast set helps your overall DPS by ramping up your Critical Hit chance over the course of the battle.

  • Armour Set: Dark Knight
    • [2 Items] Increases Attack, Defense and Max HP
    • [3 Items] Significantly increases Heavy Attack Damage. When your Heavy Attack hits, there is a very high chance to significantly increase your Basic Skill Damage for a short period of time.
  • Standalone Piece: Burning Curse Gloves
    • [1 Item] Increases your Damage Taken, but also increases your Damage Dealt.
  • Jewelry Set: Beast
    • [2 Items] Increases Critical Hit Damage
    • [4 Items] If a Critical Hit isn’t activated, the chance of the next attack landing as a Critical Hit increases very slightly, stacking up to 30 times.
