ESO Two-Sided Battlegrounds
Instead of three teams fighting each other, there will no only be two teams meaning that the Storm Lords have been removed for now and only the Pit Daemons and Fire Drakes remain. The idea was to make battlegrounds more appealing to casual gamers by increasing the team size to 8 but keep the 4v4 for competitive matches. With 8 players in your team, your death will not affect the match results as much. Players under level 50 will only be able to queue to 8v8 games.
Battleground Matches last until the other team wins or a maximum of 15 minutes. Note that you can no longer afk in your teams base, as the game will kick you into the game map after some time.
Champion Points are disabled in all ESO Battleground matches. Proc sets are allowed.
Queueing for battlegrounds
You can queue into ESO Battleground matches with solo, duo, trio, or full group of four, but not Large Groups. Alliances do not matter in battlegrounds.
Queuing for a Battleground with a party of fewer than 4 players will fill a group with other players so you can participate. After the Battleground has ended, any players added to your party for the match are removed and you are returned to where you were before you entered the Battleground.
To participate in a Battleground, open the Group & Activity Finder and select Battlegrounds. From the drop down in the upper right, select if you want a Standard 8 v 8 or a Competitive 4 v 4 Battleground. Click the Join Queue button and you will be queued for a Battleground. When the Battleground is ready, you will receive a ready check notification while you are out of combat. Accepting this confirms that you’re ready to start the Battleground.
Leaderboards
The Battlegrounds system features a leaderboard that resets weekly. You earn ranking toward the leaderboard by earning medals in competitive games. The leaderboard shows the top 100 players. Being one of the top players in the leaderboard at the time of reset earns you rewards that will be mailed directly to you.
4v4 Battleground Queue
4v4 Battlegrounds in ESO are considered the competitive mode. 4v4 matches have three different game modes and additional functionality like spectator camera. All other leaderboards have been removed and now there is only one Competitive Leaderboard which is based solely on scoring from 4v4 matches and based on your medals earned, similar to the current system.
You can queue either solo or with a group of up to four players.
4v4 game modes
- Team Deathmatch
- Domination
- Crazy King
4v4 Additional Functionality
ESO Competitive 4v4 Battlegrounds have additional functionality such as Rounds, Lives and Spectator Camera.
- Round matches are a ‘Best of 3’ format and last 5 minutes each round.
- Some matches will have lives as are displayed in the upper right corner UI HUD. Lives are per person, not per team. When you run out of lives, you can no longer respawn in the match.
- Spectator Camera will only be in matches where there are lives. You can only spectate members of your team who are still alive.
- In Team Deathmatch with lives, if you wipe the enemy out, that is considered a round win.
8v8 Battleground Queue
The 8v8 Battlegrounds in ESO are considered the standard mode. 8v8 Queue will have five different game modes and includes Powerups you can find and activate on the map.
You can queue either solo or with a group of up to four players.
8v8 game modes
- Capture the Relic
- Team Death Match
- Domination
- Chaos Ball (two different types)
- Three Chaos Balls
- Two of the Three Chaos Balls turn you into either a Vampire Lord or Werewolf Behemoth. Their skills have been highly edited and tuned for PvP.
- Crazy King
8v8 Battleground Powerups – Sigils
Battleground powerup Sigils give buffs when activated and are only available in the 8v8 game mode. Keep in mind that sigils activate in an area which means all buffs go to enemies and friends alike. There are currently four different kind of powerups available:
- Damage boost (Red )
- Super speed (Green)
- Increased damage mitigation (Blue )
- One time burst Ultimate grants (Yellow)
- ESO Powerup Sigils
- Werewolf and Vampire transformations
Seven New Custom Built Battleground maps in ESO
Four of the Battleground maps are tailored for 8v8 and three of them are meant more for 4v4 battles as they are smaller. All maps are used by 4v4 and 8v8 battles. ESO new Battleground maps are Port Dufort, Gothni Glemmni, Huntsmans Fortress, Mota-Ka, Coldharbour Colosseum, Shehai Waystation and Strid River Valley.

ESO MMR (Matchmaking Rating)
Players are matched based on their Matchmaking Rating (MMR). Players gain MMR only in Competitive matches. Some Competitive matches feature a rounds system where players have to win a certain number of rounds to win the Battleground. Players who play Competitive matches have the opportunity to receive the most recent Battleground rewards.
Your MMR is derived from a combination of whether you win or lose, and the rank of the opponents you’ve played against. Players who leave a Competitive match receive a queue penalty and a loss of MMR. MMR will reset at the start of each month. Joining a match in progress will result in lesser MMR loss for those joining the match.
ESO Battleground Rewards in Update 44
All Battleground Rewards have been re-structed and tie breakers have been added to scoring. If a match ends with both teams having the same score, the match will be determined by looking at medals earned, and lives left for tie breakers. In the rare case of a ‘true tie’ across all other determining metrics, both teams will be assessed as not winning, but also not losing for reward purposes.
The first time per day you choose to join and complete a Battleground in first or second place, you get the bonus rewards featured under Daily Bonus Rewards.
