Welcome to our Eldritch Blaster Build Guide for BG3. This is a Multiclass build that combines the Sorcerer class with elements of the Warlock and Fighter classes. We’ll be playing into the Eldritch Blast Cantrip as much as possible to blast enemies with huge amounts of Force Damage every turn.

The Eldritch Blaster Build buffs the Eldritch Blast Cantrip with as many extra projectiles and as much extra damage as possible.

Eldritch Blaster Multiclass Build Overview

For our Eldritch Blaster Build, we are combining the Sorcerer class with some levels from the Warlock and the Fighter. The Sorcerer class allows you to boost your spells with powerful Metamagic features, and the Draconic Bloodline subclass boosts your elemental damage.

In contrast, Warlock gives you access to the bg3 eldritch blast icon Eldritch Blast, Eldritch Invocations and bg3 hex icon Hex combo, which is probably the strongest Cantrip setup in the game and gives you a powerful and reliable source of consistent damage. These classes work well together because they both favour Charisma as their most important ability.

Towards the end of the game, we add the Fighter class to get bg3 action surge icon Action Surge and increase your Critical Hit chance.

BG3 Multiclass Explainer:

  • How it works: New classes can be added as you level up. They are added on a level-by-level basis.
  • Example: If you are a level 6 Warlock and decide to add 1 Sorcerer level, you will only get the features of Sorcerer level 1.
  • Example 2: If you want the features of a level 6 Warlock and Sorcerer, you need to be max level and add 6 levels of each class. (We’re not using this class distribution for our build; this is only an example!)

Pro Tip: It’s usually best to choose subclasses that work together easily. For example, the Warlock and Sorcerer go well together because they both use Charisma as their spellcasting attribute.

This means that we have to be sure that the payoff of adding new classes to your build is worth it, because every level of a secondary class reduces the highest level we can reach with our primary class.

In this Eldritch Blaster Multiclass Build, we’ll be combining the following classes:

Sorcerer

  • Our main class is Sorcerer. Draconic Bloodline is strongly recommended as the subclass because it will eventually boost your elemental damage.
  • The Sorcerer allows you to buff your spells with Metamagic, for example, increasing their range or success chance.
  • We’ll use 10 levels of the Sorcerer, allowing us to unlock all of its features with the exception of Sixth Level spells.

Warlock

  • The Warlock provides us with the powerful bg3 eldritch blast icon Eldritch Blast Cantrip, further boosted by Eldritch Invocations and the Hex spell.
  • Warlock Spell Slots are replenished on Short Rest and will automatically upcast your spells to the highest possible level, giving you some extra flexibility.
  • We’ll only be taking two Warlock levels, just enough to fully utilise Eldritch Blast.

Fighter

  • Allows access to the bg3 second wind icon Second Wind and bg3 action surge icon Action Surge actions.
  • Choosing the Champion subclass gives you bg3 improved critical hit icon Improved Critical Hit, which improves your chance to land Critical Hits. This bonus applies to all Attack Rolls, including the Eldritch Blast Cantrip.

Here is a quick overview of which class we pick when, this is important!

Eldritch Blaster Character Creation (Level 1)

BG3 Eldritch Blaster Build

In this section, we will guide you through the best starting choices for creating your BG3 Eldritch Blaster Multiclass Build.

Starting Class (Sorcerer)

We’ll start by choosing the Sorcerer class. The Warlock and Fighter elements of the build will be added later.

The Sorcerer starts the game with the following features, which we’ll build on over the course of this guide:

Core Sorcerer Features

  • Item Proficiencybg3 daggers icon Daggers, bg3 quarterstaves icon Quarterstaves, bg3 light crossbows icon Light Crossbows.
  • Sorcerer Magic – To begin with, you can learn 4 Cantrips and 2 Spells from the Sorcerer Spell List.
  • Subclass Choice – You must choose your Sorcerer subclass.

We’ll explain what to choose for these options below.

Best Race

While this build will work fine with any race in the game, there are a few choices that stand out above the rest and can be chosen if you want to optimize the build as much as possible. Here are the five best race choices for the Eldritch Blaster Build:

Race Strengths Info
wood elf icon bg3

Wood Elf

  • Proficiency in Stealth and Perception
  • Extra Weapon Proficiencies:
    • Shortswords
    • Longswords
    • Shortbows
    • Longbows
  • Fey Ancestry
    • Advantage against Charmed
    • Immune to Magical Sleep
  • Darkvision
  • Fleet of Foot – 1.5 metres of extra Movement Speed
Wood Elves are one of the best races in BG3 thanks to their increased Movement Speed, which can give you an edge in many situations.

Their immunity to Sleep is especially useful in the early-game, where your low HP will cause you to fall victim to enemy mages who love to cast the Sleep spell.

You can also choose Wood Half-Elf, which comes with many of the same benefits and gives you proficiency with Shields.

High Elf

  • Proficiency in and Perception
  • Extra Weapon Proficiencies:
    • Shortswords
    • Longswords
    • Shortbows
    • Longbows
  • Fey Ancestry
    • Advantage against Charmed
    • Immune to Magical Sleep
  • Darkvision
  • Choose an extra Cantrip (cast with Intelligence)

Very similar to Wood Elf, but missing the Stealth Proficiency and doesn’t get extra Movement Speed.

You can choose an extra Cantrip to learn, which is handy but not super important.

duergar icon bg3

Duergar

With their wide choice of armour and weapon proficiencies, and resistances to poison, charm, and paralysis, Duergar are one of the strongest races in BG3.

The only downside of Duergar is their small stature – this reduces their base Movement Speed to 7.5 metres per turn (most races get 9 metres).

Drow have similar bonuses to other Elves, but also come with a couple of extra Spells and Superior Darkvision.

Background & Skills

For your Eldritch Blaster Multiclass Background, we recommend choosing Entertainer.

The Entertainer background gives us the following Skill Proficiencies:

Entertainer Background

Acrobatics

This is a Dexterity-based Skill that gives you resistance to enemy Shove actions, which can be a lifesaver if an enemy tries to push you off a high ledge.

Performance

A Charisma-based Skill that will sometimes appear as a Dialogue option, allowing you to sway some NPCs to do what you want, or simply impress them.

You can manually choose three other Skills in addition to those granted by your Background.

Choose any Skills that are based on Charisma or Dexterity. We went with bg3 intimidation icon Intimidation and bg3 persuasion icon Persuasion, which will give you an easier time in many dialogue rolls.

If you’re a Human, you’ll get one extra unrestricted Skill Choice, which you should put in any remaining DEX or CHA skill.

Ability Points

BG3 Eldritch Blaster Build Level 1

For both the Sorcerer and Warlock classes, the most important ability is Charisma, used to determine the effectiveness of our spellcasting. We will be focusing on this ability above all others.

Other important abilities are Dexterity, which boosts our Armour Class, and Constitution, which increases our Hitpoints and improves our Concentration Checks.

Strength – 10 Points

  • Improves jump distance and carry weight.
  • Low priority for this build.

Dexterity – 16 Points

  • Boosts Armour Class (AC) and Initiative.
  • Helps you act sooner in combat.

Constitution – 14 Points

  • Increases Max HP.
  • Vital for Concentration Checks to keep spells active.

Intelligence – 8 Points

  • Not relevant for our build.

Wisdom – 10 Points

  • Used in some Saving Throws.
  • Low priority.

Charisma – 16 Points

  • Primary stat.
  • Boosts our Cantrips, Spells and dialogue checks.

Ability Points Why it matters
Strength 10 Mostly for jump distance and carry weight. Low priority for this build.
Dexterity 16 Important: Gives you a higher Armour Class and improves initiative.
Constitution 14 Important: Increases HP and helps Concentration checks for spells.
Intelligence 8 Not relevant for our build.
Wisdom 10 Helps with some Saving Throws. Low importance for this build.
Charisma 16 Our primary stat. Boosts Cantrips, Spells and dialogue checks.

Important Tips:

  • The “Even Number” Rule: In Baldur’s Gate 3, only even numbers (12, 14, 16) increase your ability modifier. This means an 11 is functionally the same as a 10, so we aim for even numbers to maximise efficiency.
  • Concentration is Key: Many important Sorcerer and Warlock spells (like hold person icon bg3 Hold Person or bg3 hex icon Hex) require Concentration. A high Constitution helps ensure you don’t lose your spell just because you took a hit.

Spells

To start with, you’ll need to select two first-level Spells for your character to learn. We recommend going with the following options for our Eldritch Blaster Build:

Spell Selection

bg3 magic missile icon Magic Missile

  • Fires 3 projectiles. The projectiles cannot miss their target.
  • Each projectile deals 2-5 bg3 force icon Force Damage.
  • Later on, you can upcast the spell for additional projectiles.

bg3 chromatic orb icon Chromatic Orb

  • Throw a projectile that deals elemental damage.
  • You can choose the element, making the spell very versatile.
  • Creates a matching surfact on impact.

Cantrips

In addition to the Spells, you’ll need to choose four Cantrips. These are less powerful spells that do not consume a Spell Slot when cast, meaning you can generally cast them every turn if you want to, with no limitations.

We recommend choosing the following Cantrips for your Eldritch Blaster build:

New Cantrips

bg3 fire bolt icon Fire Bolt

  • Deals bg3 fire icon Fire Damage from range.
  • A good Cantrip, but it will quickly become obsolete when we add the Warlock class.

bg3 bone chill icon Bone Chill

  • Deals bg3 necrotic icon Necrotic Damage and prevents the target from healing.
  • Undead targets get bg3 disadvantage icon Disadvantage on Attack Rolls.

bg3 bursting sinew icon Bursting Sinew

  • Cause a corpse to explode, dealing bg3 piercing icon Piercing Damage in a small area.

bg3 mage hand icon Mage Hand

  • Summon a spectral hand that can pick up objects from a distance.
  • Useful for solving puzzles or reaching distant objects.

Subclass – Draconic Bloodline

You must choose your Sorcerer subclass immediately. I strongly recommend choosing Draconic Bloodline because you’ll get extra defences and an elemental damage boost later in the game.

Draconic Bloodline Features

  • bg3 draconic resilience icon Draconic Resilience – Your base Armour Class is increased to 13 when you are not wearing armour. You gain 1 additional HP per Sorcerer Level.
  • Draconic Ancestry – You must choose a Draconic Ancestry to align with. We recommend choosing any of the bg3 fire icon Fire variants (Red, Gold or Brass), but you can change it if you want to focus on a different element.
    • For now, this just gives you a free spell depending on your choice. But later in the game, you’ll get bonus damage with your chosen elemental affinity.

Alternative: Another viable option is the Shadow Magic subclass. Later in the game, it can summon a bg3 hound of ill omen icon Hound of Ill Omen to support you in combat. But you get less armour than Draconic Bloodline, so you’ll need to get the bg3 mage armour icon Mage Armour spell and use it after every Long Rest.

BG3 Eldritch Blaster Multiclass Build Levelling Guide (2-12)

Now, we are going to look at how to level up your Eldritch Blaster Build for Baldur’s Gate 3.

Early-Game Levelling (2-4)

In this section, we’ll cover the first four levels.

Level 2

BG3 Eldritch Blaster Build Level 2

For this level, we will already add the Warlock class to the build. The image above shows where you need to click to add a new class.

Adding the Warlock class to your build gives the following benefits:

Warlock Spell Slot(s)

These are a special type of Spell Slot that are replenished on both Short and Long Rests. They automatically upcast spells to the highest possible level (not relevant yet, but will be helpful later on).

You can choose 2 Warlock Cantrips to unlock. It is imperative to choose bg3 eldritch blast icon Eldritch Blast, as this will be a vital part of this build:

New Cantrips

bg3 eldritch blast icon Eldritch Blast (Essential!)

  • Deals 1d10 bg3 force icon Force Damage to the target at long range.
  • This can be spammed every turn and is stronger than the Sorcerer Cantrips.
  • Later on, we’ll be able to massively upgrade this Cantrip, making it OP on its own.

The second Cantrip is unimportant; you can choose any of the remaining options.

You can unlock two Warlock Spells, which will be cast using your new Warlock Spell Slot:

New Spells

bg3 hex icon Hex (Essential!)

  • Place a Hex on an enemy, causing them to take additional bg3 necrotic icon Necrotic Damage when you hit them.
  • This makes for an excellent combo with bg3 eldritch blast icon Eldritch Blast.
  • This gets stronger later, when we can spam Eldritch Blast more often.

Pro Tip: When the Hexed enemy dies, you can recast the spell on a new enemy for free, as long as you maintain Concentration on the spell.

bg3 armour of agathys Armour of Agathys

  • Gives you some Temporary HP.
  • Enemies who hit you in melee will take bg3 cold icon Cold Damage.
  • This spell isn’t too important, so you can pick something else if you want.

You can now spam bg3 eldritch blast icon Eldritch Blast, which allows you to deal reliable damage from range without spending Spell Slots.

To get the best out of the build, remember to combo bg3 eldritch blast icon Eldritch Blast with your new bg3 hex icon Hex spell.

Level 3

BG3 Eldritch Blaster Build Level 3

We will add another Warlock Level to the build here, allowing us to quickly rack up a lot of extra power from bg3 eldritch blast icon Eldritch Blast.

Taking two Warlock levels so early gives you a strong, reliable tool to fight with in the early-game, and one that scales up very nicely over the course of your playthrough.

You’ll need to choose two Eldritch Invocations. These are special abilities that let you further customise your Eldritch Blaster build.

We strongly recommend choosing the following two options:

 Agonising Blast

  • Adds your Charisma Modifier to the damage of your Eldritch Blast, considerably improving its damage.

 Repelling Blast

  • Your Eldritch Blast will now push enemies back 4.5 metres.
  • This helps to keep enemies at a long distance from your party.
  • It can knock them off ledges or cliffs, causing fall damage.

Level 4

BG3 Eldritch Blaster Build Level 4

We will now return to the Sorcerer class.

Make sure you switch back to the Sorcerer class before confirming your level up! See the image above if you don’t know where to click.

You unlock a new resource called Sorcery Points. These are spent to activate Metamagic powers, and can be replenished by Long Resting. You’ll also gain +1 Sorcery Point at every Sorcerer Level up.

Metamagic – Choose 2:

bg3 distant spell icon Distant Spell

  • Increases the range of the spell by 50%.
  • Melee-only spells get a range of 9m.

bg3 twinned spell icon Twinned Spell

  • Spells that only target 1 creature can target an additional creature.
  • Costs 1 Sorcery Point per Spell Slot level used. Cantrips also cost 1 Sorcery Point.

You can also unlock a new spell. We recommend:

New Sorcerer Spell

bg3 thunderwave icon Thunderwave

  • A good early AoE spell that deals bg3 thunder icon Thunder Damage in a conal area.
  • Knocks enemies back if they fail a Strength Saving Throw.
  • Can knock enemies off ledges for huge falling damage.

Mid-Game Levelling (5-8)

In this section, we’ll cover the mid-game. During these levels, the Eldritch Blaster Build will become much more powerful, accessing a wider array of spells.

Level 5

We’re adding another Sorcerer Level, giving you a total of Sorcerer Level 3 and Warlock Level 2 so far.

You’ll now unlock some better Sorcerer spells and an additional Metamagic power.

Metamagic – Choose 1:

bg3 quickened spell icon Quickened Spell

  • Spells that usually cost an bg3 action icon Action cost a bg3 bonus action icon Bonus Action instead.
  • Use this when you need to deal a lot of damage in one turn.

You can choose another Sorcerer spell to learn:

New Sorcerer Spell

Scorching Ray

  • Fire three bolts of fire in rapid succession.
  • Each bolt does 2-12 bg3 fire icon Fire Damage.
  • Later on, you can upcast the spell to fire more bolts.

Level 6

BG3 Eldritch Blaster Build Level 6

We’re adding our fourth Sorcerer level here.

This will give you access to a Feat to improve your Eldritch Blaster’s stats, and another new spell.

First, let’s choose a new spell:

New Sorcerer Spell

bg3 shield icon Shield

  • Temporarily boosts your Armour Class by 5.
  • Can also be used to block an enemy Magic Missile spell.
  • This can be set up to trigger as a Reaction. You can activate it on the fly to save your character from the most dangerous enemy Attack Rolls.
  • Be tactical with your use of this spell, or else you can quickly run out of Spell Slots.

Choose a Feat – Feats are bonuses for your character that give them a special passive or just increase an Ability Score:

Dual Wielder

  • You can now dual-wield all weapons that aren’t two-handed.
  • This allows us to combine powerful weapon bonuses together that wouldn’t otherwise be possible.

Level 7

We’ll now add the fifth level of the Sorcerer class to our Eldritch Blaster Build.

This is quite a simple level in terms of what you unlock. As usual, you get a new Sorcery Point. Besides that, you get one more spell.

New Sorcerer Spell

Fireball

  • Deal up to 48 bg3 fire icon Fire Damage.
  • Large AoE.
  • Upcast to increase the maximum damage.

Level 8

BG3 Eldritch Blaster Build Level 8

We’re adding the sixth Sorcerer Level to our Eldritch Blaster, taking the total to 6 Sorcerer, 2 Warlock.

This level is important because you will unlock the most defining features of your Sorcerer subclass.

New Subclass Features – Draconic Bloodline

bg3 elemental affinity damage icon Elemental Affinity: Damage

  • When you cast a spell that deals damage of the same type associated with your Draconic Ancestry, add your Charisma Modifier to the damage.
  • This is currently 4 extra damage if you followed the guide.

bg3 elemental affinity resistance icon Elemental Affinity: Resistance

  • When you cast a spell that deals damage matching your Draconic Ancestry, gain Resistance to that damage type until next Long Rest.
  • Costs a bg3 sorcery points icon Sorcery Point and a bg3 reaction icon Reaction to activate.

Tip: Our spell recommendations so far have assumed that you chose a fire-based Draconic Ancestry as advised earlier in the guide. If you chose a different type, you might want to replace Fireball with a spell that matches your type.

Alternative: If you picked the Shadow Sorcery subclass, you’ll now unlock the bg3 hound of ill omen icon Hound of Ill Omen. Be sure to summon him before starting combat!

New Sorcerer Spell

Haste

  • Target yourself or an ally to Hasten them.
  • Gives the target an extra Action, double Movement Speed, +2 to Armour Class, and Advantage on Dexterity Saving Throws.
  • When the buff ends, the beneficiary will be Lethargic, unable to move for 1 turn.
  • Requires Concentration

Tip: If Haste ends early due to you losing Concentration, the beneficiary will still become Lethargic. Try to keep your Eldritch Blaster safe from damage when they are using this spell!

Late-Game Levelling (9-12)

We will now finish off the build by adding the Fighter levels, increasing your attack rate and damage.

Level 9

BG3 Eldritch Blaster Build Level 9

It’s time to add the first Fighter level to the build.

The first Fighter level will bring you the following new features:

Fighter Features

bg3 second wind icon Second Wind

  • Use a bg3 bonus action icon Bonus Action to heal your character.
  • Can be used once per Short Rest.

Additional Proficiencies

  • If you don’t already have them, you’ll gain Profciency with the following equipment types:
    • bg3 martial weapons icon Martial Weapons
    • bg3 light armour icon Light Armour
    • bg3 medium armour icon Medium Armour
    • bg3 shields icon Shields

Fighting Style

  • You can choose a Fighting Style for your build.
  • This is of fairly low importance for us, since we’re not focusing on weapon combat.
  • Use Protection if you’re using a Shield, or Two-Weapon Fighting if you’re dual-wielding.

Level 10

We will now add a second Fighter level to the Eldritch Blaster Build.

This gives you one very important new feature.

New Fighter Feature

bg3 action surge icon Action Surge

  • Gain an additional bg3 action icon Action on your current turn.
  • You can use this once per Short Rest.

Level 11

BG3 Eldritch Blaster Build Level 11

We’ll add a third Fighter level now.

You’ll need to choose your Fighter subclass – we recommend choosing the Champion subclass to increase your critical hit chance.

Champion Subclass – Starting Feature

bg3 improved critical hit icon Improved Critical Hit

  • Reduces the number needed to roll a Critical Hit by 1.
  • This can stack with other similar effects.
  • It works on all Attack Rolls, including spell Attack Rolls like Eldritch Blast.

Level 12

BG3 Eldritch Blaster Build Level 12

This is the maximum level for the Eldritch Blaster Build. We will add one last Fighter Build, which unlocks a second Feat slot.

We will unlock a new Feat to increase your Critical Hit rate with Eldritch Blast and other Spell Attack Rolls.

New Feat:

Spell Sniper

  • Reduces the number needed for a Critical Hit by 1 (only applies to spell and cantrip attacks)

This Feat combination allows you to equip the Blade of the First Blood in your offhand slot (explained properly in the Equipment section below) to further increase your Crit chance.

  • Stuck in a rock in the Underdark. Requires a Strength or Religion check to free it.

We aren’t using a ranged weapon because it isn’t required – you’re best off using your spells and cantrips to deal ranged damage.

The most important items here are the two weapons, the spellsparkler icon bg3 The Spellsparkler and phalar aluve Icon BG3 Phalar Aluve. These combine to add heaps of extra Lightning and bg3 thunder icon Thunder damage to each projectile from your Eldritch Blast.

Most of the other items are intended to either synergise with these bonuses or to give general buffs to your defensiveness.

For example, bg3 gloves of belligerent skies icon Gloves of Belligerent Skies add the Reverberation effect when you deal Lightning or bg3 thunder icon Thunder Damage, which will quickly stack up for even more bg3 thunder icon Thunder Damage as well as debuffing your enemies. The bg3 ring of absolute force icon Ring of Absolute Force adds a little extra Thunder damage into the mix.

the protecty sparkswall icon bg3 The Protecty Sparkswall gives you a small buff to your Armour Class and Saving Throws whenever you have a Lightning Charge. Once you have the Spellsparkler, this will be pretty much all the time.

Important: Most of the bonuses here also work with the bg3 magic missile icon Magic Missile spell, so you can use that when you need a big chunk of extra damage. That spell is especially nice because it cannot miss, and most enemies can’t block it. We have a somewhat similar build that focuses on boosting Magic Missile: BG3 Magic Missile Build Guide

Here is a summary of how these items work together to boost this Eldritch Blaster Build for Baldur’s Gate 3:

Attacking Items:

  • bg3 sarevoks horned helmet icon Sarevok’s Horned Helmet – Reduces the number needed for a critical hit by 1.
  • potent robe Icon BG3 Potent Robe – Deals 3 extra damage for every bolt in the Eldritch Blast cantrip. At Level 10, you get three bolts, so this is 9 extra damage per cast, a huge boost for one item.
  • bg3 craterflesh gloves icon Craterflesh Gloves – Bonus Force Damage every time you land a Critical Hit.
  • bg3 spineshudder amulet icon Spineshudder Amulet – Your Eldritch Blasts will apply many stacks of Reverberation to the target, dealing extra Thunder Damage and potentially stunning them.
  • callous glow ring icon bg3 Callous Glow Ring – Allows you to deal extra damage against illuminated enemies.
  • risky ring icon bg3 Risky Ring – You get Advantage on Attack Rolls, but Disadvantage on Saving Throws. It’s important to combine this with Helldusk Boots to combat the negative effect.
  • markoheshir Icon BG3 Markoheshkir – Gives another +1 bonus to Spell Attack Rolls and Spell Save Difficulty Class.
  • bloodthirst icon bg3 Bloodthirst – Reduces the number needed for a Critical Hit by 1.
  • the dead shot Icon BG3 The Dead Shot – Reduces the number needed for a Critical Hit by 1.

Defensive Items:

  • cloak of displacement icon bg3 Cloak of Displacement – You are displaced at the start of every turn, giving enemies Disadvantage when they try to attack you. This makes you very hard to hit.

Mobility & Utility:

  • helldusk boots Icon BG3 Helldusk Boots – Allows you to teleport and gives you immunity to Difficult Terrain. Allows you to spend your Reaction to succeed any Saving Throw, which largely negates the negative effect of the Risky Ring.

As you can see from our distribution of attacking vs defensive-minded items, this build can be a bit of a glass cannon. Since we are a ranged combatant, keep this in mind and keep your Eldritch Blaster as far from enemies as possible while still being able to hit them. Utilize line-of-sight obstructions to block enemy ranged attacks when possible.

We have three items reducing the Critical roll requirement. In combination with the Champion subclass and the Spell Sniper Feat, you only need to roll 15 to crit with Eldritch Blast. This, combined with the Risky Ring giving you two shots at every roll, means that you will be landing an insane amount of crits with this build.

Eldritch Blaster Build Extra Info

BG3 Eldritch Blaster Multiclass Build

Here is some extra information that will help you to get the most out of this Eldritch Blaster Build in Baldur’s Gate 3.

How to Play this Eldritch Blaster Build

Early-Game Basics

We only need two Warlock levels for this multiclass build, and we opted to add them very early in the game because you get quick access to the bg3 eldritch blast iconEldritch Blast & bg3 hex iconHex combo, further buffed by the Agonizing blast icon bg3 (1)Agonising Blast and Repelling Blast icon bg3Repelling Blast Invocations.

From Level 2 and above, you can cast bg3 hex iconHex on an opponent and then keep hitting them with bg3 eldritch blast iconEldritch Blast to deal consistent damage. If you maintain Concentration, you can recast bg3 hex iconHex on a new target later on, without spending another Spell Slot.

This simple combo will be your bread and butter for most encounters. The Sorcerer class gives you a wider range of spells than what the Warlock alone would have, including buff spells, debuffs for enemies, and some good AoE spells. Keep in mind that other spells requiring Concentration cannot be used at the same time as bg3 hex iconHex.

Another important Sorcerer spell is scorching ray icon bg3 Scorching Ray, which works similarly to bg3 eldritch blast iconEldritch Blastfiring multiple rays of fire at enemies. If you have a low hit chance against a target, you can use bg3 magic missile icon Magic Missile, another spell that shoots several projectiles at the target. While it deals comparatively less damage, it benefits from being unable to miss!

When you have unlocked the Dual Wielder feat, be sure to combine the Spellsparkler with Phalar Aluve to add as much extra damage to your Eldritch Blast as possible. This weapon combo will last you until partway through Act III when better options become available.

Finally, note the differences between regular Spell Slots and Warlock Spell Slots:

  • Normal Spell Slots are only replenished on Long Rests. They are divided into different levels, which determine the spell’s potency. You can upcast many spells in the game – for example upcasting Fireball to level 4 will increase its damage.
  • Warlock Spell Slots are replenished on both Short and Long Rest, but you can only hold two of them. They are not split into levels. Spells cast with a Warlock slot are automatically upcast to the highest possible level.

Maximising the Build for Mid-Late Game

The main purpose of this build is to buff up the Eldritch Blast cantrip, make it possible to cast it several times per turn, and massively increase your Critical Hit chance.

bg3 eldritch blast iconEldritch Blast Critical Hit buffs

  • Base Crit Requirement = 20 roll
    • -1 from Champion subclass
    • -1 from Spell Sniper Feat
    • -1 from Bloodthirst weapon
    • -1 from Dead Shot weapon
    • -1 from Sarevok’s Helmet
  • Collecting all recommended items = only a 15 roll is required to crit
  • The Risky Ring further increases your Critical Hit chance. In percentage terms, this build should have a Critical Hit chance of around 43% on every Eldritch Blast projectile. This also applies to other spell Attack Rolls like Magic Missile and Scorching Ray.

You can use the Haste buff to get two actions per turn and the Sorcerer’s Quickened Spell feature to cast Eldritch Blast with a Bonus Action. This means you can cast Eldritch Blast three times in one turn, potentially even four times if you use the Elixir of Bloodlust.

If you’re not concentrating on an effect like Haste, then it’s still decent to use the Hex spell to boost your Eldritch Blast’s damage ceiling.

It’s important to remember that Eldritch Blaster is a glass cannon damage dealer. They should be kept at long-range as much as possible, and always avoid direct confrontation with enemies.

Play with an evasive playstyle, cast your spells and then get some distance between yourself and the enemies or hide behind an obstruction to protect yourself. The Displacement Cloak gives you some protection against enemy attacks, but as soon as you take even a single point of damage, you will lose its protection until the next turn, so you must stay mindful of positioning so that the Eldritch Blaster won’t get attacked many times on your turn!

Eldritch Blaster Build Illithid Powers (optional)

BG3 Illithid Powers Skill tree

Illithid Powers are unlocked later in BG3 when you learn more about Mind Flayers and Tadpoles. By eating Jars of Mind Flayer Parasites you gain one point. This is another optional skill tree that you can get access to if you want. Here are some of the best Illithid Powers for the BG3 Eldritch Blaster Build:

 Concentrated Blast

  • Allows you to deal extra damage to a target when you are Concentrating on a spell, potentially also healing if the target is Concentrating too.
  • Ideally, you will spend a lot of time concentrating on either Hex or an AoE like Hunger of Hadar, so you should be able to get good use from this.

 Cull the Weak

  • When you reduce a creature’s hit points below a certain threshold, this power instantly kills it and deals 1-4 Psychic Damage to nearby enemies.
  • This is particularly effective when engaging groups of weaker foes, enabling you to thin their numbers rapidly.

 Fly

  • This can be used to reach hard-to-get-to places or change positions in combat.

 Black Hole

  • This power creates an area-based effect that pulls in and slows targets.
  • It’s particularly useful for crowd control, allowing you to cluster enemies together for area-of-effect attacks or to isolate them from vulnerable allies.

Pro Tip: Try getting the Haste buff from a Potion of Speed or the Haste spell (lets you perform 2 Actions on one turn), then casting Black Hole and then Hunger of Hadar to cause a world of pain for a group of enemies.

 Psionic Backlash

  • This is a top-tier reaction from the Illithid Powers skill tree in BG3.
  • This allows you to deal psychic damage when a nearby enemy casts a spell.
  • This is especially useful if the target is casting a Concentration Spell.
  • The damage from Psionic Backlash can immediately break their Concentration, ending the spell’s effects.

Eldritch Blaster Build FAQs

BG3 Eldritch Blaster Multiclass Build Guide

Here are some frequently asked questions related to the BG3 Eldritch Blaster Multiclass Build. Most of these questions have already been answered in the guide itself.

FAQ: What’s the best race for the Eldritch Blaster Build?

While any race will work just fine for this build, the best options are:

  • Wood Elf – Very high mobility, resistance to effects like magical sleep and Charm, innate Darkvision. The extra Movement Speed is an underrated bonus that allows you to outrun foes.
  • Duergar – Gives you innate Superior Darkvision. Allows you to wear Medium Armour. Gives you Resistance to Poison Damage and Advantage against the Poisoned, Charmed and Paralysed effects. This wide range of bonuses makes the Duergar very tough.
  • Drow – Similar bonuses to the Wood Elf, but doesn’t have the extra Movement Speed. However, you do get Superior Darkvision and can debuff enemies with Faerie Fire.

For more info about the best races, see the Best Race section above.

FAQ: What roles can the Eldritch Blaster fill in my party?

The Eldritch Blaster is a glass cannon damage dealer.

This build does have some options for buffing your team and debuffing enemies, but it isn’t built with this in mind – it’s best if you leave these tasks to others in your team and allow your Eldritch Blaster to focus on what they do best – dishing out relentless damage every turn from a safe distance.

FAQ: What Abilities are most important for the Eldritch Blaster?

  • Charisma is the most important ability for your Eldritch Blaster build, because it determines the efficacy of your spells and cantrips and will also boost many of your Skills, such as Persuasion, Performance and Intimidation. Put 16 points in Charisma at the start and increase it later in the game.
  • Dexterity is also very important. It boosts your Armour Class and Initiative, allowing you to move earlier in the turn. Put 16 points in this.
  • Constitution should always be at least 14 for any build in Baldur’s Gate 3, and this one is no different. This gives you a necessary baseline of HP, and helps you to resist a wide range of hostile effects with Constitution Saving Throws. It also helps you to keep Concentration on spells when you take damage.

FAQ: Which subclasses should I use?

  • For the Sorcerer, we recommend the Draconic Bloodline subclass for this build. You get extra Armour Class to help you through the early game. Later on, you’ll gain affinity with your chosen element, allowing you to deal extra spell damage and gain Resistance against that element.
    • You can also use the Shadow Magic subclass, which will allow you to summon the Hound of Ill Omen to support your character and distract enemies. If you do that, you’ll have a lower base Armour Class and must use Mage Armour to make up for it!
  • For the Warlock, I prefer The Hexblade because it allows you to become Proficient with any weapon in the game (which may or may not be needed, depending on which race you chose), and can debuff enemies with the Hexblade Curse.
    • The Fiend is another good choice – It will give you Temporary HP whenever you kill an enemy.
  • For the Fighter, it’s very important to choose the Champion subclass. The Improved Critical Hit does a lot for our build, and we don’t need any of the effects from the other Fighter subclasses.
