Welcome to our Mage Staff and Wand Build for Throne and Liberty. With this Mage DPS Build, we will be using the combination of the Staff and Wand & Tome weapons to achieve powerful ranged damage output in combat.
Mainhand: Staff
Offhand: Wand
With the Staff & Wand build, it is advised to stay mobile and keep your distance from enemies, kiting them when needed – there is no need to be in melee range of enemies with a ranged build, so you might as well stay at range to minimize the damage that you take.
Table of Contents:
Staff and Wand Build Setup for Throne and Liberty
In this section, we will explain the important components of the build, such as stats, passives, skills and equipment.
Stats
The most important stat for the Staff and Wand build is Wisdom, which improves the damage output of the Staff and Wand weapons, as well as improving your Mana regeneration, maximum mana and cooldown reduction, which allows you to cast more often and more reliably. The second stat that is useful is Dexterity, which improves Crit Chance.
- Strength: 10
- Dexterity: 30
- Wisdom: 30
- Perception: 11
Your stats will increase even more due to gear also giving different stat bonuses, keep that in mind.
Additionally, it is also important to note that you can place a few points in Strength to increase your health values. Because Strength increases your health and might prevent you from getting one shot by bosses.
Weapons Main vs Off-hand
- Main-hand: Staff
- Off-hand: Wand & Tome
Our main weapon slot is occupied by the Staff and our off-hand weapon slot is the Wand/Tome. Both weapons synergize well with each other because both can be used at range. The Staff has more damage skills available, therefore you will see more Staff spells slotted than Wand/Tome. However, Wand/Tome also has plenty of good damage spells that apply debuffs that then can boost our overall damage. You can read up on what the Skills/Spells do further below.
Defense Skill
Each build in Throne and Liberty can slot one defense skill. Because we are using the Staff and Wand & Tome we have a choice between two defensive skills:
- Staff: Mystic Shield
- Wand & Tome: Chaotic Shield
For the Staff and Wand/Tome build we are using Mystic Shield, which restores your Mana when you defend against a Fury Attack.
Active Skills
Below are explanations of the skills/ spells we are using for the Staff & Wand Build in Throne and Liberty.

- Serial Fire Bombs – Deals damage and inflicts Weaken: Burning.
- Inferno Wave – Deals damage to all enemies within 3 metres of the target. Deals extra damage when used against Burning enemies, with a chance to inflict Weaken: Burning.
- Icebound Tomb – Deal damage, with a chance to freeze the target and inflict Weaken, reducing the target’s Movement speed.
- High Locus – Increase Cooldown Speed and Movement Speed.
- Judgment Lightning – Deals massive damage, with 2/3 of the original damage spreading to up to 5 enemies within 5 metres of the target, if the target is wet. Can be used up to two more times within 10 seconds, if used against a target with Weaken: Burning. This powerful skill has a long cooldown.
- Ice Spear – Fires an ice spear that pierces the target in the designated direction, dealing damage with a high chance of Weaken that decreases Move Speed.
Wand & Tome Skills
- Touch of Despair – Apply Weaken: Curse, dealing Damage over Time.
- Curse Explosion – Deal damage to the target. Any enemies within 5 metres that you have applied Curse: damage over time to, it will forcibly remove all stacks of Curse, Burning and Poison and deal 130% of the remaining damage of each.
- Corrupted Magic Circle – Create an AOE that inflicts Weaken: Curse, dealing damage over time to enemies.
- Time for Punishment – Applies Weaken: Curse which has a very high chance to reduce skill damage resistance.
- Karmic Haze – Inflicts Weaken that spreads the activated Curse from the main target to up to 3 other targets within a 5m range..
Passive Skills
Below are explanations of the passives, including how they can synergize with other passives and skills.

Staff Passives
- Asceticism – Improves your Mana Regen. The improvement is increased if you have been motionless for more than 5 seconds.
- Mana Sphere Eruption – When you shoot a magic orb with your staff or wand, you have a chance to shoot an additional magic orb.
- Mana Amp – Increases Max Mana.
- Flame Condensation – Weaken: Burning inflicted by you deals more damage.
- Frost Master – Your Movement Speed Reduction effects now reduce Movement Speed by a greater amount, and last for longer.
- Forbidden Sanctuary – Increases Damage Reduction upon hitting more than 2 targets with a single attack. This effect will not trigger for 12s after it’s activated.
Wand & Tome Passives
- Full of Corruption – When a target you Weakened dies, your max damage is increased.
- Wraith’s Beckon – Increases the Duration of Curses you inflicted and the chance to inflict Curses increases.
Skills and Passives Upgrade Priority
Upgrading Skills and Passives in the right order will make combat a lot easier in Throne and Liberty. However, it also takes quite a long because you need so-called “Growth Stones” to upgrade and the higher quality ones are difficult to get. Therefore it is important to plan ahead which skills you want to upgrade first.
Note: You unlock higher level skills already in a higher quality such as Rare or Epic. So you won’t have to upgrade all of the Skills.

Equipment Armour and Jewelry
When you are leveling up this build don’t worry too much about gear. The gear itself only becomes important after level 50. Make sure to read our Throne and Liberty Equipment Guide to understand the basics of how gear works. Additionally, we also recommend reading the Throne and Liberty Gear Enchanting Guide to get an understanding of how you can improve your gear and why it is important.
Important: Getting the correct traits for each item piece is very time-consuming, even if you don’t have the perfect traits the build will still perfectly work.

How to Play the Staff & Wand Mage DPS Build
Now that we have explained how to create the Staff and Wand & Tome build for Throne and Liberty, we will cover the best ways to play the build to get the best out of it, including combos and general tips.
Staff & Wand Build Combos
While you can play the Staff & Wand build on a casual level by just using random skills or spamming the same skill over and over again, the more skilled player will make the most of their skills and passives, many of which can be used in a certain order to buff the final damage output of each skill – these are known as combos.
Below are the most important combos for this Build, along with a summary of how/why they work.
Staff & Wand Tips & Tricks
- Don’t focus too much on gear early on. Gear farming only becomes important after you hit max level.
- Get equipment that gives you extra Max Health or Wisdom stats at the beginning.
- Always keep track of your cooldowns, especially on the high cooldown Skills.
