The Maelstrom Arena is relatively easy on normal mode and very difficult on veteran mode. Clearing Maelstrom Arena on normal mode will award you with imperfected Maelstrom Weapons, whereas clearing Maelstrom Arena on veteran mode, you will be rewarded with Perfected Maelstrom Weapons. However clearing it on veteran mode can be a huge challenge as many attacks instantly one shot you.
