Witches Festival Quest: The Lord of Fear

ESO The Lord Of Fear questgiver Priest Maxien Roudille

Warning: The Lord of Fear Quest contains jump scare(s) and loads of general creepiness.

The special Witches Festival “The Lord of Fear” quest giver Priest Maxien Roudille is found inside the Witches Cove in AuridonGlenumbra or Stonefalls. You do not need to complete any quests to enter the Witches Cove. Priest Maxien Roudille will task you with rescuing three Haunted people in the three different base game zones; Grahtwood, Deshaan and Stormhaven. After rescuing the three Haunted people, you will face Lord Hollowjack himself inside his Seat of Detritus. After rescuing the haunted once on a character, the next time you pickup the daily quest with that character, it will ask you to just defeat Lord Hollowjack.

Remember to return the quest to Priest Maxien Roudille as the “Dremora Plunder Skull, Lord Hollowjack” has a very small chance to offer you ALL the new special rewards in a single skull!

ESO Lord Hollowjack Boss Fight Mechanics

ESO Lord Hollowjack Boss Fight

You will find Lord Hollowjack inside his realm, the Seat of Detritus. Its is recommended to bring other players with you as the fight has resource drains and some stuns. He has 6,6 million health and several phases with adds joining him quite often. You don’t take much damage from anything except from his Aura of Dread during his search phase which is a one-shot, killing you instantly.

You are able to join groups to defeat Lord Hollowjack for a chance of obtaining his bust, even if you do not have the quest. The portal will open the moment a player with the quest joins your group, or you join theirs.

Note that you will not get the Dremora Plunder Skull without the quest.

Normal phases

Lord Hollowjack mainly scratches and claws at the players not doing a lot of damage. He has some other skills as well with Sapping Scarecrows being the most important one.

  • Pumpkin Bombs: He throws several small bombs that create a AOE with roots. This aoe spawns Patch Wraith adds.
  • Spirits of Fear: He puts his fist down and summons AOE’s under players stunning them.
  • Chains: He chains one player and starts pulling them towards himself. He must be interrupted or the player dies. He only does this mechanic with larger groups.

Sapping Scarecrows

ESO Sapping Scarecrow

Sapping Scarecrow Totem

Information about the Sapping Scarecrows has been updated based on code65536 info: Killing the Sapping Scarecrows has no effect on the amount of resource drain stacks that happen during the crouching phase. Crouching phase resource drain stacks depends on the amount of crows that are on the ground.

ESO Lord Hollowjack summons Sapping Scarecrows that apply resource drain to all players. During normal phases (not crouch phase) Sapping Scarecrows apply a resource drain to all players until they are destroyed. The amount of Sapping Scarecrow totems that spawn is based on your group size.

You can either ignore the Sapping Scarecrows and burn the boss down really fast or kill all the Scarecrows to get rid of the resource drain.

Lord Hollowjack Crouching Phases (hunt phase)

ESO Lord Hollowjack Boss Fight Hunt phase

Sneak phase / Hunt phase

Lord Hollowjack will start hunting the players twice during the fight: at 70% and 40%, he will also heal himself back to 70% and 40% health even if you get him to 0% before the phases start. You will need to stay crouched and avoid the boss’s and lanterns Aura of Dread AOE’s as touching it kills you instantly.

Lord Hollowjack starts the crouch phase by yelling loudly and stunning all players for a few seconds also despawning all adds and totems. You must start crouching after he yells or he will see you and charge at you, killing you and everyone his Aura of Dread touches. The sneak “eye” icon will not close fully, but you will be hidden from him as long as you are crouched.

Tips and recommendations for the Crouching Phase

  • Spread out around the map since the boss will charge at players that stop crouching killing the target and all other players that touch the AOE during the charge.
  • Resurrect immediately so you can complete the phase even if people keep dying. AS long as one person is alive, the crouch phase will be a success.
  • Change to drinks that only buff your stamina regeneration such as Hagraven’s Tonic which gives you 604 stamina regen.
  • Use potions that return stamina.
  • Being a vampire is also very helpful as the Dark Stalker passive removes the cost of sneaking.
  • Add Champion points to the Fleet Phantom passive to reduce sneak cost.
  • You can also wear gear gear with bonuses to sneaking:
    • Vesture of Darloc Brae set returns resources every second when you are sneaking.
    • Shadow Walker set restores health and stamina when you are sneaking, but not moving.
    • Night’s Silence Set removes the cost of sneaking fully, same as the vampire passive.
    • Darkstride Set redcuces the cost of sprint and sneak by 50%.

Resource draining Crow Mechanic

ESO Scare Crow

Scare Crows during the crouch phase

During the crouching phase, resource draining Crows will appear above players heads and on the ground at the same time. These stacks are removed by using the “Scare Crow” Synergy on the crows that have landed. The amount of crows on the ground signify the amount of resource drain stacks on your character aka one crow synergy removes one stack of resource drain.

The amount of crows that appear at a time is dependent on your group size, the bigger the group, the more crows appear. Additionally the amount of lanterns depends on the group size as well. For example a full 12 man group will have the boss and two lanterns during the crouch phases.

Execute Phase

Boss Fight Execute phase

After the second crouch phase, his execute phase starts. He summons a giant Jack-o’-lantern that casts blazing beams to the ground which sadly do not do much damage either. Most groups just ignore mechanics at this point and kill the boss.
