Guide to Improving Weapons in The First Descendant

There are several steps you need to follow to get the best results when upgrading your weapons in The First Descendant. Below we will cover these one by one.

How to Get High-Level Weapons

The first step is to get high-level weapons to begin with – there’s little point in upgrading low-level weapons, as they’ll soon become obsolete – it’s a waste of crafting materials.

To get high-level weapons, you first need to unlock the higher-level missions. To do this, keep playing through the main story, which will also level up your character as you go. You’ll eventually unlock missions that drop weapons at or near max level – once you get to this point, you can farm those missions for high-quality weapons. Look for Rare and Ultimate-tier weapons.

We made a more detailed guide about weapon farming in The First Descendant in case you want more information about this.

Upgrading Weapons

Once you’ve found weapons that have good stats and you enjoy using them in The First Descendant, it’s time to start thinking about upgrading them. This will allow you to get the best possible stats on the weapon, increasing its DPS rating.

To do this, head to the Workbench in Albion and select Weapon Level Transmission. This system allows you to transfer a high-level weapon’s level to a lower-level weapon, enhancing the DPS and stats of the target weapon. This will destroy the weapon that you transfer from, but it helps to reduce the amount of farming you need to do. If you have an unwanted high-level weapon, you can transfer its level to a weaker weapon that you enjoy using more.

For example, you might have found an ultimate-tier weapon with a powerful weapon ability, like the Thundercage Submachine gun, but the weapon is low-level and therefore not worth using. You can use Weapon Transmission to improve its level to the level of any other weapon in your inventory. You can even transfer the level of a Standard weapon to a Rare or Ultimate one, so it’s quite easy to make your low-level weapon viable again.

Use the weapon farming process outlined earlier in the guide to keep finding high-level weapons to transfer the level from.

Keep using this system as you progress and level up your character to keep your favorite weapons as powerful as possible. Eventually, you will have a full set of max-level weapons, and at that point, it’s worth moving on to the next part of the upgrade process.

You’ll need Phase Exchangers to complete this process. This is a crafting material that can be earned or created in The First Descendant. We’ll quickly explain how you can get those at the end of this guide.

Upgrading Weapon Abilities

Once you’ve maxed out your weapon levels, the only remaining step is to upgrade the Weapon Abilities.

Weapon Abilities are special passive features found only on Ultimate-tier weapons. They have various different effects, such as applying debuffs to enemies or allowing the weapon to do extra damage under certain conditions.

When you obtain an Ultimate weapon, it has the basic version of the ability. You can upgrade this up to 4 times to improve the strength of the ability – the exact effect of this will depend on which ability is on the weapon.

This is an end-game progression aspect that will take you quite a while to finish, no matter how good you are at farming and power levelling. This is because you need to find an identical weapon to enhance the weapon ability.

For example, if you want to enhance the ability of the Thundercage Submachine gun we mentioned earlier, you’ll need to find another Thundercage submachine gun. You can then use the Weapon Ability Upgrade system at the Workbench to combine the weapons, creating a new version with an upgraded weapon ability. You must repeat this process three more times to completely max out your weapon.

Once you’ve done this and fully upgraded your Modules, you have created a complete end-game character in TFD with the best possible gear. But this will be a time-consuming process.

How to Get Phase Exchangers in The First Descendant

As mentioned earlier in the guide, Weapon Level Transmission requires Phase Exchangers, a crafting material that can be earned or crafted in The First Descendant.

Crafting materials like Phase Exchangers can sometimes be earned in mission rewards, but the most reliable method to get them is to create them yourself.

Head to the NPC Anais in Albion to view the Research Requests menu. Go to the Enhancement Materials section. Here, you can craft Phase Exchangers, provided you have enough basic materials and gold to initiate the process. If you have enough materials you can also speed up the process by crafting five at once.

Be sure to familiarise yourself with the other items that can be crafted here.
