Welcome to our guide on how to unlock other Descendant Characters in The First Descendant. When you first start out in The First Descendant, you’ll only have one of the Descendant characters unlocked. As you progress through the game, you may want to give the other Descendants a try.

You can unlock all of them for free by playing the game, but there’s a slightly complex process you need to follow to unlock them. In this guide we will explain exactly how to do it.

How to Unlock Descendants in The First Descendant

To begin the process of unlocking other Descendants, you need to visit the NPC called Anais, in Albion. Speak to her and access the Research Requests menu.

In the Research menu, go to the Descendant category. You can now see an overview of all locked Descendants, and you’ll notice that each one has some advanced crafting materials that are required to “craft” the Descendant. Below, we will explain how to obtain these materials in The First Descendant.

How to Obtain the Materials for your Descendant

Hover over the Descendant you want to unlock, and then press the “Go to Research” button. This opens a new screen that gives a more detailed breakdown of what you need to unlock the Descendant. On the right side of the screen, you can see which materials are required.

How to Research Descendants

Next, you need to figure out how to craft each one of the required items. Hover over each item in turn to see more information about it, and again press the “Go to Research” button. This will open the Research page for the individual items, and you’ll find that each one of these requires another selection of items.

TFD Descendant Component Research

You can hover over these tertiary items and press the button again to see the Acquisition Info for each item. This will explain exactly where you need to go to find these items; for example, Superfluid can be found in the Sterile Land Vulgus Supplies and Albion Supply Box missions. Keep playing any of the listed missions to get the required materials for the research.

How to Find Materials to unlock Descendants in TFD

You can find three of the four required items for each component using the above method, but the fourth item is a blueprint, and the game is a bit more secretive about where you can find these. When viewing the Acquisition Info for the Blueprints, you’ll find that the blueprint comes from an Amorphous Material.

You can earn Amorphous Materials by completing certain missions – namely the Special Operations that are unlocked in each zone after completing all of the other missions in the zone. These are wave encounter missions that grant you increasing rewards as you progress further into them, and these rewards include various Amorphous Materials.

Amorphous Materials are like containers that contain a set of rewards when opened. But just obtaining them isn’t enough to open them.

How to Open Your Amorphous Material

Hover over the Amorphous Material. At the bottom of the pop-up you’ll see a button prompt to See Linked Colossus. The button required will differ depending on your platform and controller. Press it and you can find out which Colossus is linked to the Material.

Amorphous Material

You will need to defeat a Colossus in order to open your Amorphous Material – Colossi are powerful bosses that can be taken on in Void Intercept Battles. These battles are not easy, and it’s recommended that you spend some time upgrading your character before attempting them. A good way to do it is to focus on grinding the first three materials first which do not require Amorphous Materials, in the process you will find new Modules, Weapons and materials to improve your character. When you’ve finished those, you should be in much better shape for taking on the Void Intercept Battles.

If the required Colossus is locked, you’ll need to first beat the ones before it to unlock it in The First Descendant. Once you’ve beaten the required Colossus, you can open your Amorphous Material and finally get the Blueprint.

Finishing the Research to unlock The First Descendant Character

When you have the required components, you’ll need to initiate the research. This takes some time, usually a few hours, and has a gold cost. You need to do this for all four components.

After researching all components, you can research the Descendent Characters themselves. Again, this will take a few hours and has a large gold cost. When it is finished, you can play as your new Descendant.

This is quite a grind-intensive process, but it gives you something extra to work towards while levelling up your Descendants. We also ranked all the characters if you wonder who performs best.
