Throne and Liberty is a classless MMO. But what does that exactly mean and is it important? When we talk about MMOs we often know that at the start of the game, you are able to create your own character and select a class that you want to play with. For example, in ESO you could pick a Sorcerer or a sneaky Nightblade. In Throne and Liberty this works a bit differently.
In Throne and Liberty you can play as a Tank, Healer or Damage Dealer. But how does that work with a classless system?
How the Throne and Liberty Classless System works
At the start of your journey in Throne and Liberty you create your own character, like with every MMO. Now instead of selecting a class you select weapons for your Throne and Liberty character. That means the Throne and Liberty classes are bound to weapons or so-called professions. This was done to give players more freedom of choice.
If you have to pick a class per character it would lock you in and the endless grind of new characters would start and annoy players, like in most other MMOs.
Your character can equip up to two different weapons in combat and weapon swap while fighting. That will give you the opportunity to adjust your playstyle mid-fight. A Damage Dealer might pick a Two Hander on the front bar and Dual Wield Daggers on the back bar and swap between them while fighting. Dual Wield Daggers could be optimized for single target damage whereas the Two handers is meant for area of effect damage.
A Tank might decide to go with Sword and Shield on the front bar and a Two Hander on the back bar to also be able to deal some damage if tanking isn’t needed in Throne and Liberty. A Healer can pick a Restoration Staff and a Destruction Staff to also mix things up a bit.
Throne and Liberty also allow you to make more silly combinations like using Dual Wield Daggers on the front bar and a Restoration Staff on the back bar. However, it is hard to say how useful this will be since the weapons likely scale with certain attributes that you want to focus on. And physical melee and magical restoration often don’t mix well together.
How do Weapons Progress and Level in Throne and Liberty?
Throne and Liberty will allow you to level up the weapon skill lines. For example, if you want to play a stealthy character in Throne and Liberty you will likely pick Dual Wield and Bow. You can level both of these weapons up to gain new skills and deal more damage. However, once you maxed these things out you can also level up other types of weapons such as the Two Hander on the same character.
A really experienced player will eventually have maxed out all Weapon Types in Throne and Liberty on his character and swap between different weapon types depending on what content they want to clear.
Weapon Swapping in Combat in Throne and Liberty
Throne and Liberty will have seamless weapon swapping mid-combat. To not interrupt the flow of combat you can weapon swap with the press of one button and then instantly use the new weapons skills. Below we do have a good example of how weapon swapping will work in Throne and Liberty (Project TL).
The character pulls in the enemy with a chain skill from the Sword and Shield weapon type, bashes them away again and then immediately swaps to Dual Wield Daggers, gap closes in and deals damage.
To further showcase this you can view an example of how Weapon Swapping works in Throne and Liberty here:
Once we get our hands on the game we will also have builds for Throne and Liberty MMO ready.
Throne and Liberty is designed with a classless system in mind. Classes are based on Weapons. Your character can equip two weapons at once but learn all of them. That means there is no need for a tedious grind every time you want to swap your class/weapon.
