Introduction

Welcome to the Magicka Dragonknight Build “Valakas” for Elder Scrolls Online. Make sure to bookmark the link as I will keep updating the build for each new Update of ESO. The “Valakas” build is made for PvE Trials, Dungeons & Maelstrom Arena.

Magicka Dragonknights unleash their maximum damage potential in melee range. They both have really strong Single Target and AoE damage output. Due to being melee we also get more incoming damage as ranged setup, but this is not that big of a deal because we have a shield at our disposal which makes survival a lot easier. Resource management is also pretty nice as long as we use Power Lash and off-balance is present on the enemy boss, because then the Power Lash will have a cost of zero. We will also use a Shock staff on our front bar, this is especially helpful in trash fights. Heavy Shock Attacks deal a ton of damage and restore a lot of magicka in the same time, plus we can stay slightly outside of the trashmobs so we do not get hit all the time!

  • High single target (ST) damage
  • Insane melee damage
  • High area of effect (AoE) Damage
  • Good sustain
  • Easy survivability due to magicka shield
  • Made for Trials, Dungeons & Maelstrom Arena

Resource Management

Magicka Dragonknights can have very good sustain, but you really need to make sure that Off-Balance is present in your group. Because we are using Flame Lash, which will have zero cost when the enemy is set off balance. I also found a 7 Light Armor setup to be the best, so we gain a bit more cost reduction, but still have good resources and health for trials if we combine it with Silk of the Sun set. Another must have for this patch is the “Drain Magicka Poisons”, they help tremendously with sustain. In the Important Info section you will see how to craft them. They give you about 240 Magicka per second over 5,5 seconds, thats insane! Now the last big thing that you can choose on your own to tweak your sustain, Magicka Recovery Glyphs. I felt I reached good sustain with 1 Recovery Glyphs. However, if you think your sustain is still not where you would like it to be, then try with  two Magicka Recovery Glyphs and then you should definitely be good to go. Heavy Attacks are also a great tool to restore resources, while we not really need them for this build, if you really get into a situation where you dry out, use one or two heavy attacks!

  • Flame Lash Morph & Off balance on enemies
  • Drain Magicka Poisons
  • Magicka Recovery Glyph
  • Heavy Attacks

Gear

Gear Best in Slot

Since Morrowind most setups use the Drain Magicka Poison to get some magicka back during the fight, which means a Maelstrom Staff will be Best in Slot on the frontbar. The poison will surpress the Crushing Wall enchantment, but not the extra 189 Spelldamage.

  • No Maelstrom Staves? If you do not have Maelstrom Staves you can use Moondancer staves, so you gain the 129 spelldamage from the 4th Moondancer Bonus. Infallible Aether also works!
    No Moondancer Staff?
In case you do not have Moondancer Staves, use a random sharpened staff. It is the next best solution and you barely loose any damage.
  • Why Shock Staff on frontbar? Shock staves became very popular, because you can easily restore magicka with heavy attacks and you can stay outside of trashfights and simply do shock heavy attacks to deal insane damage and restore magicka at the same time!
  • Grothdarr vs Valkyn: If you want, you can run Valkyn to get slightly more health, the damage difference will be very small!

Gear Valkyn Setup

This setup here is slightly more sustainable then the one on top, because we use 7 Light Armor pieces which will give us more cost reduction opposed to a 511 setup. To make up for the loss of health because the undaunted passive gives us less overall resources (2% instead of 6%), I run the Valkyn set which includes one health bonus, deals a ton of damage and looks cool!

Gear beginner

This setup is dedicated to people that have not had the chance to farm the necessary gear for the maximum damage potential for this Magicka Dragonknight build. All the gear here is either craftable or cheap to get in a guildstore. Make sure to ask a friend to craft Twice Born Star and Julianos gear for you. I do recommend that you are aiming for 17k health. To achieve this you can buy one or two Willpower rings with a healthy trait. You could also use Seducer instead of Twice Born Star.

Where can I get the gear?

Silk of the Sun: Stonefalls
Moondancer: Maw of Lorkhaj
Grothdarr: Vaults of Madness
Twice Born Star: Craftable
Julianos: Craftable
Willpower: Imperial City Vaults, Guildstore
Maelstrom Staff: vMaelstrom Arena

Skills

  • Standard vs Destro Ultimate: Basically, in fights where there are a lot of mobs present, I prefer using Destro Ultimate because it allows us to have way more burst damage over Standard. This is a personal preference, if you prefer Standard, use it.
  • Why Destro Ulti on Frontbar? On each bar you must have a Destruction Staff ability slotted, otherwise you will not gain the 8% bonus from Ancient Knowledge.
  • Molten Armaments: If you do not want to use Spellpower Potions because they are expensive, then you can use Molten Armaments.
