Gear Setups for Horns of the Reach

Introduction

There were quite a few changes in Horns of the Reach DLC. With this article I want to talk about the different Gear Setups for Damage Dealers, Healers and Tanks. Along with Mundus Stones and Weapon Trait changes.

Is there a “Best in Slot”?

In some kind of way yes, but there is so many good Sets out there that almost perform equally that it does not really matter. It always depends on your playstyle and what kind of setup and abilities you do run for your build. Most people overestimate the importance of gear setups. It is way more important to NOT die, have a good rotation, have good group buffs, good positioning and a good group synergy.

Mundus Stones for Stamina and Magicka Damage Dealer Setups

Most Mundus Stones are pretty well balanced and give about the same results in terms of dps. Preferred are The Apprentice (Spelldamage) for Magicka Setups and The Warrior (Weapondamage) for Stamina setups as they give slightly better results then other Mundus Stones. The Lover (Penetration) is also a good choice for Solo Players or when you have not yet reached the Penetration cap.

Gear Setups for Magicka Damage Dealers

I will list up a few possible setups. Most people still run around with the setups from Morrowind just with different Weapon Traits. With Julianos you can really never go wrong, it is and most likely will always be one of the strongest sets to use. So setups like 5x Julianos, 4x Moondancer, (or Infallible Aether), 2x Monster Set combined with a Maelstrom Staff are still very popular. If you have a class that deals a lot of the same Elemental or Magic damage you can also use sets like Netch’s Touch, Silks of the Sun, War Maiden, Burning Spellweave and so on. The general rule is that you need to have about 75%+ damage from the same Element to make it worthwhile. So for example if you have about 80% Shock damage on your Magicka Sorcerer, then its worth using Netch’s Touch. If it is lower it might just be better to run Julianos. In the end, the difference is really small in terms of DPS.

You can also choose between setups that have a full Monster Set or only a one piece bonus. For example 2x Ilambris, 2x Grothdarr, 2x Valkyn and so on are popular choices. Or you can simply just use two five piece sets with 1 extra piece of a Monster set like Molag Kena or Iceheart or two one piece Monster Sets so you get two extra Bonuses, for example 1x Kena & 1x Iceheart combined.

5x Julianos, 4x Moondancer, 2x Monster Set, 1x Maelstrom Staff
5x Julianos, 5x Netche’s Touch, 1x Iceheart (or Kena)
5x Julianos, 5x Mother’s Sorrow, 1x Iceheart (or Kena)
5x Julianos, 4x Moondancer, 1x Kena, 1x Iceheart, 1x Maelstrom Staff
5x Burning Spellweave, 4x Infallible Aether, 2x Grothdarr, 1x Maelstrom Staff
5x Burning Spellweave, 5x Silks of the Sun, 1x Iceheart

and so on…..there are more possibilities, this is just here to give you a few examples.

What Weapon Traits for Magicka Setups?

Here is it where it gets a bit tricky. Now you should always make sure to be as close to the penetration cap as possible. Most bosses have 18.2k Resistance. In Dungeon or Trial groups with the right debuffs, you do not really need the Lover Mundus Stone (Penetration) or a Sharpened Weapon (Penetration) because you already sit close to the Penetration cap with debuffs and Championpoints. If that is the case most people run Infused on the frontbar with a Shock or Fire damage Glyph. Depending on how long you stay on the backbar, you can either go with Infused or Nirnhoned. I like to play with Nirnhoned on the backbar and a Spell Damage Glyph on the Weapon to get higher AoE damage on trash (given you do not use a Maelstrom Staff). This is not maced into stone, like i said you can also run Nirnhoned on your frontbar if you want. The difference in overall dps is pretty small.

Gear Setups for Stamina

Stamina Setups basically run the same gear as in the previous update. Sets like Hundings Rage still outperform most other sets, this is especially nice because you can simply craft the set. For Stamina Setups penetration is also important. Unlike Magicka Setups, Stamina Setups do not have penetration built into their armor passives. So you need to get it from somewhere else which is explained in the article about Stamina Optimization. Stamina also has a pretty tough time sustaining, which makes sets like Vicious Serpent a very good choice. As we are always running Dual Wield on our frontbar, we can usually also run a full Monster Set like Velidreth, Mephala, Stormfist and so on. You can also combine 1x Velidreth with 1x Slimecraw or 1x Kragh.

5x Hundings Rage, 5x Two Fanged Snake, 2x Monster Set
5x Hundings Rage, 5x Vicious Serpent, 2x Monster Set
5x Spriggan, 5x Vicious Serpent, 1x Velidreth, 1x Kragh
5x Hundings Rage, 5x Morag Tong, 2x Monster Set
5x Night Mothers Gaze, 5x Automaton, 2x Monster Set

and so on…..there are more possibilities, this is just to give you a few examples.

What Weapon Traits for Stamina Setups?

The only thing that really changed was the trait of the weapons, we are running Infused Weapon Main-hand with a Poison Enchantment and a Precise Weapon on the Off-hand with an Weapon damage Enchantment. As for the bow on the backbar, you can either run a Precise or Nirnhoned Maelstrom Bow, the difference is really small so both traits work great. I did not yet include Infused as a option on backbar, because I heard rumours that it is bugging out. I have to confirm this first tho.

Mundus Stones for Healers & Tanks

Healers usually choose The Atronarch (Magicka Recovery) because it really helps a ton with recovery. For Tanks depending on your build you can also run The Atronarch (Magicka Recovery) or The Tower (Max Stamina) or The Lord (Max Health) and so on.

Gear Setups for Healers

For Healers not really anything changed in terms of gear setups. The most popular sets are still Spellpower Cure, Wormcult, Healing Mage and sets like Sanctuary and Kagrenac’s Hope can also be very strong, especially in groups that just started some of the newer trials. Along with that Healers usually run the Master Restoration Staff which you can obtain in veteran Dragonstar Arena.

5x Spellpower Cure, 5x Wormcult, 1x Master Resto Staff
5x Spellpower Cure, 5x Healing Mage, 1x Master Resto Staff
5x Spellpower Cure, 5x Kagrenac’s Hope, 1x Monster Set

and so on…..there are more possibilities, this is just here to give you a few examples.

What Weapon Traits for Healers?

On the frontbar most healers run a Master Restoration Staff with either an Infused, Powered or Precise trait. On the Backbar it does not really matter what trait you run with. Most run with a charged trait to increase the chance to proc concussion on the enemy with a Shock Staff. If you do not have access to a Master Staff you can run 1x Monster Set and then use a Staff from on of the two sets you are wearing, which is probably also hard to get because the droprate of Staves is really low from Sets.

Gear Setups for Tanks

Same thing for tanks, not a lot changed. You can either choose between a full health build or a more support like build for your group. Sets like Ebon Armor, Plague Doctor, Green Pact, Roar of Alkosh, Tavas Favor and Werewolf Hide really shine. As you are running double Sword & Board, you can also choose a full Monster Set. For Example you could run a full Monster Set of Bloodspawn, Mighty Chudan or Lord Warden. You could also go for one piece Monster Sets to gain more Health or Recovery like Valkyn, Malubeth, Chockthorn or Shadowrend.

5x Ebon armor, 5x Plague Doctor, 2x Bloodspawn
5x Ebon Armor, 5x Roar of Alkosh, 2x Mighty Chudan
5x Tavas Favor, 5x Werewolf Hide, 2x Bloodspawn

and so on…..there are more possibilities, this is just here to give you a few examples.

What Weapon Traits for Tanks

Tanks should really prioritize to use an Infused Weapon with a Crusher Enchantment and a second weapon with an Infused Weakening Enchantment. Those two Enchantments debuff the boss like crazy.

Whats the most important thing for you & your Character?

You need to feel comfortable with your build and playstyle. Builds are here to guide you, to give you a guideline and improve your knowledge, they are not here to just be copy pasted (even tho that usually also works in some kind of way).
